AKNOWLEDGEMENT

In the name of Allah, The Most Gracious, The Most Merciful…

First of all, I would like to say Alhamdulillah, for giving me the strength and health to do

this project work until it done. Not forgotten, special gratitude I bid to my family for
providing everything, such as money, to buy anything that are related to this project

work and their advise, which is the most needed for this project. Internet, books,

computers and all that as my source to complete this project. They also supported me

and encouraged me to complete this task so that I will not procrastinate in doing it.

Then I would like to thank my teacher, Mr Mohd Nazrin bin ………… for guiding me

throughout this project. We had some difficulties in doing this task, but he taught me

patiently until I knew what to do.

Last but not least, my friends who were kindly sharing and giving me some ideas. They

were helpful on aiding me to finish this task.

ABSTARCT

The R- design is a product based on the art of creative sewing such as patchwork,

weaving appliqué, quilting, and slash quilt. This product is produced by recycling rag,

patchwork fabric and worn cloth into nice and fantastic product like cushion cover,
bedspread, table clothing, beg and curtains. The initial idea was to recycle fabric waste

and to make an income by selling the product produced as the main target is ‘from

waste to wealth’.

The process of design this product began with sketching the feature of the product.

Based on the sketching, two prototypes (cushion cover) were designed. The prototypes

were manufacture by focusing on patchwork and weaving.

The prototypes designs are cost effectiveness, environmental friendliness and have

commercial value. These special features of this product are hopefully can spark some

ideas and spirit in women especially single-mother, housewives, and even career

women out there.

INTRODUCTION

I choose this project after seeing many single-mother out there were live in poverty

because they does not have income after their spouse died. So, I come with an idea to

recycle unused fabric like worn cloth, rag and patchwork fabric into a commercial item
like cushion cover, bedspread, table clothing and beg. The main material used is very

cost effective or even does not need a cost as the material used were recycle items.

The materials needed even could be getting in our own house. This project also based

on target ‘from waste to wealth’. Therefore, I hope this project may spark some ideas

and spirit in women especially singled-mother or even housewives and career women

out there to generate income for a better life.

OBJECTIVE

”From waste to wealth”

To help women out there especially single-mother, housewives and even career

women to generate additional income.

Reuse the recycle fabric as a material to form something usable and have

commercial value.

To save the environment

To design a product that is cost effective, environmental friendliness and has

commercial value.

LITERATURE REVIEW

Patchwork enjoyed a widespread revival during the Great Depression because it was

a way to recycle worn clothing into warm quilts. Even very small and worn pieces of
material are suitable for use in patchwork, although crafters today more often use

specially bought 100% cotton patchwork material as the basis for their designs.

In the US, patchwork declined after World War II, but was again revived during

the American bicentennial.

There are three traditional structures used to construct a patchwork or pieced

composition: 1) the block, 2) overall, and 3) strip piecing. Traditional patchwork has

identifying names based on the arrangement of colors and shapes.

Blocks

Patchwork blocks are pieced squares made up of colored shapes that repeat specific

shapes to create patterns within the square or block, of, say, light and dark, or

contrasting colors. The blocks can all repeat the same pattern, or blocks can have

several different patterns . The patchwork blocks are typically around 8"–10" square

(20cm to 25cm). They are sewn together in stacked rows to make a larger composition.

Often strips of contrasting fabric forming a lattice separate the patchwork blocks from

each other. Some common patchwork block names are Log Cabin, Drunkard's Path,

Bear's Paw, Tulip, and Nine Patch. A unique form of patchwork quilt is the crazy

quilt. Crazy quilting was popular during the Victorian era (mid–late 19th century). The

crazy quilt is made up of random shapes of luxurious fabric such as velvets, silks,

andbrocades. The patchwork pieces are stitched together forming "crazy" or non-

repeat, asymmetric compositions. Fancy embroidery embellishes the seam lines

between the individual, pieced shapes.

Overall

Overall patchwork designs are incrementally pieced geometric shapes stitched together

to form a larger random or composed design. The colored shapes can be randomly

pieced or follow a strict order to create a specific effect, e.g. value (light to dark)

progressions, orcheckerboard effects. Names such as Hit or Miss, Clamshell, back-

stitch, needle weave, criss-cross and Starburst identify some overall patchwork

structures.

Strip piecing

Strip piecing involves stitching together pieces of fabric in repeat patterns into long

strips and then stitching the strips together lengthwise. The patchwork strips can be

alternated with strips of contrasting colors. A typical strip patchwork quilt is the Flying

Geese pattern.

Weaving is a textile craft in which two distinct sets of yarns or threads are interlaced

to form a fabric or cloth. The threads which run lengthways are called the warp and the

threads which run across from side to side are the weft or filling.

Cloth is usually woven on a loom, a device that holds the warp threads in place while

filling threads are woven through them. Weft is an old English word meaning "that which

is woven".
A fabric band which meets this definition of cloth (warp threads with a weft thread

winding between) can also be made using tablet weaving techniques.

The way the warp and filling threads interlace with each other is called the weave. The

majority of woven products are created with one of three basic weaves: plain

weave, satin weave, or twill. Woven cloth can be plain (in one colour or a simple

pattern), or can be woven in decorative or artistic designs, including tapestries. Fabric in

which the warp and/or weft is tie-dyed before weaving is called ikat.

Though traditional handweaving and spinning remain popular crafts, nowadays the

majority of commercial fabrics in the West are woven on computer-controlled Jacquard

looms. In the past, simpler fabrics were woven on dobby looms, while the Jacquard

harness adaptation was reserved for more complex patterns. Some believe the

efficiency of the Jacquard loom, with its Jacquard weaving process, makes it more

economical for mills to use them to weave all of their fabrics, regardless of the

complexity of the design.

PROBLEM STSTEMENT
There are many single mothers out there live in poverty as they lost their main income

after their husband died. So, I come with the idea to recycle fabric waste into an item

that have commercial values to help them generate additional income.

METHOD
1.

Cut the patchwork fabric to a geometrical shape like rhombus, square and rectangle.

They are sewn together in stacked rows to make a larger composition.

Then, sew it as a pattern on a cushion cover

2.
 The patchwork fabric is cut into rectangular shape.

 then, they are sew to form a long strip.

the strips then are weave together (weave them like weaving mat)

 then, sew it as a pattern on a cushion cover

Conclusion
The patchwork fabric is incredibly very useful to make an income. With a ton of hard

work, leisure and creativity will give you a better life. Hopefully, this project will spark

some spirit and ideas to all women out there especially single-mother, housewives and

even career women to lead a better life.
