DevOps : Sailing through the pandemic with ease

The world is facing a crisis due to Covid19 and businesses have been hit worst. But they have to keep
running for the economy to survive and remain intact. Amid lockdown all over the world, operations
have been held up, companies are pivoting towards new action plans, restructuring their business
models. This has forced them to quickly adapt the digital way. IT companies are at the helm of things
to ensure business continuity which come with additional responsibilities. They are constantly being
tested on their agility and the ability to deliver project deployments.

The strong adoption of DevOps is helping companies to quickly deliver results based on the
requirements. The concept is relatively new which has taken off to become a major influence on
software development. In simple terms, it means the cross-department collaboration between the
development and operations team. DevOps engineers are custodian of production systems in any
company. They are responsible to handle production incidents, plan and execute platform scaling,
build automation for servers, help product engineers troubleshoot bugs in production, ensures that
servers are never down. Now with companies having limited cycle for delivery, continuous
integration and automation is the way forward.

DevOps is a lean thinking process. Since revenues are affected by huge numbers, the focus lies not
just on efficiency, but rather the mindset of upgrading the work methodology which had gone
unchecked for a while now. This cultural change will help teams working from home. DevOps is by
default built for remote operations. It has process oriented and automated software delivery. From
testing model to automated deploy, correcting the bug to doing the quality run, DevOps is the
answer in these trying times.

Now let’s see how DevOps is being leveraged during this corona pandemic.

With requirements of the clients changing every now and then, as they adapt to new challenges,
DevOps is facilitating the delivery with speed and flexibility. While a company may plan to release a
new product seeing the market condition, the product team can work on releasing features, while
the engineering team continuously deliver software.

Few sectors which have seen surge in demand, like EdTech and OTT platforms, DevOps
responsibilities have significantly increased because of additional scaling that the tech platform
would need. This involves regular updates planned on day to day basis with the help of scrum
framework involving tech, marketing, finance and customer service teams. A small bug in any of the
offerings can lead to bad consumer experience that can cost the business. In fact, all online
businesses who had DevOps in back of their minds have already included in the process
management system.

Time is the most crucial factor now. With DevOps, companies are eyeing at automating many of the
repeating tasks which enables to make rapid changes and improving operativity. It also gives the
chance to look at organizational potential of tapping the untouched in the form of new model/
revenue stream/market. This also means you can constantly experiment to know what suits your
client the best. Today, companies make changes to their processes to accommodate customer
feedbacks and preferences.

With timely delivery of projects, the client might end up giving you few new projects to handle. Well
who doesn’t want a upsell. The continuous feedback mechanism with effective reporting and
monitoring has proved that DevOps has kept customer satisfaction on the top of its objective.

Since there is no certainty of when the situation becomes normal, WFH has forced the DevOps to be
moved to cloud that will support the remote operations without the need of maintaining servers
physically. This makes the maintenance of backup hassle free along with saving costs.

But remember, implementing DevOps doesn’t make you DevOps ready. It’s more of a different
culture and needs fresh perception. Companies tend to implement only in processes that concerns
them at the particular moment and plan to address the specific problem. What if the business takes
a strategic shift? You will surely succumb to these situations.

The right approach would be to think more strategically and building blocks for long term right from
the beginnings. Obviously, we don’t want to see any organisation to ‘fail’. The DevOps market will hit
around USD 11 billion by 2023, at a CAGR of 24.7%. Going forward, this is going to be the new
normal, so why not include it to get the early advantage of knowing the system in and out and
customize it to fulfil your business’s needs.
