Comments: My approach to the podium was confident. The ensemble was able to follow my
instructions based on my presence on the podium. Throughout the rehearsal, my posture needed
to grow a bit more and be more confident in the beginning gestures. My eye contact needs to
improve. I keep choosing to have eye contact with the same students. I need to make eye contact
with each member of the ensemble at different points of the rehearsal, especially when I am
keep my rebound, ictus style, and baton level steady. I noticed my beats 2 and 3 were not
consistent in placement. I need the prep beat to be more confident as the ensemble starts. The
next rehearsal, I will make sure to subdivide as I bring in the ensemble. I also will not let the
band get away with dropping their sound or the melody. As the band grows in dynamics, I
should not loose tempo or pace. I feel like once I get clearer and confident with my rebound and
ictus, the ensemble will follow my baton with their sound. I also need to make my plane’s for 1
and 2 closer together because my baton is wide and hard to follow. I also need to make the
connection from beats 3 to 1 smoother. I hesitated a lot going from 3 to 1 which confused the
band. Once I am able to clear that, the band should play clearer and more in time. I need to show
Comments: Before the next rehearsal, I need to plan on what I am doing with my LH. I do not
know how I want to use that yet, and it showed throughout the rehearsal. It was very random and
sometimes unclear. I need to be more intentional with the purpose of the use of the LH. I also
can improve my facial expressions. Without my mask, it would be non-existent. I need to work
on showing with my eyes and hands the emotion and style I want from the ensemble. I did make
some eye contact, but I need to make eye contact with sections that I am cuing or addressing. As
I was addressing sections, I was constantly looking at my score. I need to look up more to the
sections I am talking too. My cut off with the left hand needs to be clearer and more intentional.
IV. Rehearsal Poor Excellent

Comments: I communicated with the ensemble well, but I need to look less at the score when
addressing sections. Throughout the rehearsal, my pacing was good, but I touched on things
faster than I intended, so I was really confused the last half of the rehearsal. I was making it up
on the spot, so next time I need to over prepare and be more detailed about what I want the
ensemble to get out of the rehearsal. I need to be able to correct sound and length of phrases
more. It is difficult for me to identify during my time conducting, but as I listen to the rehearsal I
can figure out where to start the next time I am on the podium.
Comments: Going into rehearsal, I had a good familiarity of the score so I knew what to listen
for and address. I need to look less at the score while conducting because I know more than I
think I do. The transfer of knowledge needed to be clearer. I want the ensemble to understand the
style of the piece and what the piece is supposed to sound like. I will address that during the next
rehearsal so students can understand how to practice the musicality of the piece.
