(ETH Zurich; Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zürich)

ETC Zurich is one of the world's leading universities in science and technology. It is
located in Zürich, Switzerland and is a public research university. The university was
founded in 1984 by the Swiss Federal Government with the objective of educating
engineers and scientists, has 16 programs that offer academic education and
conduct scientific research.
History of ETH Zurich:
Ever since it was first founded, ETH Zurich has been a driving force for Swiss
industry, whose innovative products and services in demand worldwide.
Ever since it was founded in 1855 under the name "Polytechnikum", ETH Zurich has
been a national educational institution of international standing, attracting talent from
all over the world. It was initially composed of six faculties: architecture, civil
engineering, mechanical engineering, chemistry, forestry, and an integrated
department for the fields of mathematics, natural sciences, literature, and social and
political sciences. It is locally still known as Polytechnikum, or simply as Poly, derived
from the original name eidgenössische polytechnische Schule.
ETH Zurich is a federal institute (under direct administration by the Swiss
government) The decision to establish a new federal university was highly
controversial at the time. The Liberals have pushed for the creation of "federal
universities," while the Conservatives want all universities to remain under state
control, fearing the Liberals gain more political power than they already have.
Initially, both universities were located in the University of Zurich building.
From 1905 to 1908, under the presidency of Jérôme Franel, the course program of
ETH Zurich was restructured to that of a real university and ETH Zurich was granted
the right to award doctorates. ETH Zurich was given its present name, Swiss Federal
Institute of Technology (Eidgenössische Technische Hochschule), in 1911. Over the
decades that followed, it entered solid partnerships with the state and with industry
and invested increasingly in both applied and fundamental research, which were
gaining in importance in relation to education. In 1961 it embarked on the first stage
of constructing its second site on the Hönggerberg, on the outskirts of Zurich.
More recently, global developments such as computer assisted data processing and
the profound consequences of globalization have placed ever increasing demands
on universities. ETH Zurich is responding to these new challenges by creating
flexible organizational structures: new units and research programs have emerged
and research itself is becoming more integrated and interdisciplinary. The long
tradition of ETH Zurich, combined with its ability to constantly adapt to new
requirements, has brought success to the university. Today, it ranks among the top
science and technology universities in the world.

Future plans:
Campus Hönggerberg 2040:
Between now and 2040, the university plans to increase the total volume of its
buildings by 50 percent. Hönggerberg's vision is to make it an attractive campus with
the feel of a city district, combining teaching and research buildings with public
spaces, gardens and a busy boulevard with cafes and stores.
In the future, the campus will be a place where students and researchers from
different disciplines meet to exchange ideas, as well as a place for socializing and
leisure activities, where guests and local residents are welcome. The university aims
to create a high-quality urban area through these measures. The Hönggerberg
campus is central to ETH's plans to develop its spaces and real estate. Between
now and 2040, the university plans to increase the total volume of its buildings by 50
percent.
The following topics are particular areas of focus in relation to the redevelopment:
➢ Sustainability
➢ Infill development
➢ Open and green spaces
➢ Getting around
➢ An urban neighbourhood
➢ Preservation and development

The Hönggerberg campus is undergoing further development on the basis of the Masterplan
2040.
Other plans:
• The new BSS building is a dedicated research building for the departments
of natural sciences and medicine, which is expected to be delivered this year
and will open its doors for research the following year, worth approximately
200 million Swiss francs to build, for approximately 600 employees and 100
students.
• The ML/FHK building is undergoing complete renovation, it is being renovated
to bring new machines for research and renovate its power plant, it is a
building more focused on robotics.
• HIC Building is a building for students and entrepreneurs, with business talent
so that through communication they can develop and implement their ideas
to generate different business ideas, this building will finish its construction in
2026 and a year later it will open its doors to the public.
• HPQ Building It is desired that this be the most modern building for physics,
with a laboratory and offices, in which progress can be made in the study of
quantum technologies. This building will finish its construction in the year
2027 and will start its operation in the year 2028.
