SAMBAL PEOPLE: ETHNIC


GROUPS IN THE PHILIPPINES
 The word "SAMBAL“ was
originally called "SAMBALI"
by the Spanish and later
Castilianized as "ZAMBAL."

 A term derived from the


Malay word SEMBAH,
which means "to
worship”.
 Filipino Ethnolinguistic

Zambales, the city of
Olongapo and the
Pangasinense
municipalities of
Bolinao and Anda.
 Original Austronesian inhabitants of
the province of Zambales in the
Philippines

 AUSTRONESIAN MIGRATION THEORY


 The expansion of a group of people called
the Austronesians from Asia into the
Pacific by means of Taiwan 6,000 years
ago.

 The Austronesians migrations began


from the Chinese mainland,
reaching Taiwan first in 3500 BC
After this, they began to travel
further, and it was just 500 years
PETER BELLWOOD later that they managed to reach the
Philippines by 3000.

SAMBALIC LANGUAGES








 Sambal speakers are found in Santa Cruz, Candelaria,
Masinloc, Palauig and Iba in Zambales, and also in
Infanta in the Province of Pangasinan, and in Puerto
Princesa on Palawan. In the year 2000 there were
about 70,000 speakers of Sambal.

 The largest Sambalic languages are Sambal, Bolinao,


and Botolan with approximately 200,000, 105,000
and 72,000 speakers respectively based on the 2007
population statistics from the National Statistical
Coordination Board (NSCB).

TRADITIONAL DRESS

 Their clothing is unique; they wear a single-


shoulder short-sleeved shirt with short trousers.
 On the chest and shoulders
of the baro , they wear an
emblem ( insignia, badge )
that looks like a different
colored cross.
HAIRSTYLE OF SAMBAL

They shave half


of the head, in
front, so their
foreheads look
wide. Their long
hair starts only at
the top, and
hangs down at
the nape.
 The Sambal people had a
complex indigenous religion
before Spanish colonization.

 It is where the majority of


people adhere to animism-based
belief systems. They are known
as Anito or Anitism, as well as
the more modern and less
ethnocentric Dayawism.
 Today, the Sambal
are predominantly
Roman Catholic,
though probably still
superstitious.
 The SAMBALS were known to
be MILITANT and FIERCE
FIGHTERS

 The Sambal were also known


to have kidnapped and
enslaved Diego Silang as a
child.

 They are well-known for their


bloody raids on Christian
DIEGO SILANG Y ANDAYA settlements.
CRANIAL TREPANATION

 Their execution
method consisted of
drilling a hole in the
top of the skull and
then scraping out the
brains.
HEAD ON A STICK

 They remove the head and incise it in the shape of a crown


with a balarao. They then keep the head or skull as a prized
possession and trophy, representing the number of men they
have killed.
HERBAL HEALING

 The MANAGTAMBAL have unusual healing practices and


roles in the pre-treatment, treatment and post treatment of
diseases.

 These plants are used for first aid purposes and to address
various health concerns such as menstruation cramps, urinary
tract infection, snake bites, headaches, diarrhea, stomach
aches, itchy skin, and many more.
