Drone for Mining
Solution
Drone for Mining Survey Solution

Drone equipped with camera (photogrammetry) and laser (LiDAR) is used in

mining concession all over the world as an alternative solution for surveying.

The result is significantly faster, better resolution, and safer.

Methodology
(Photogrammetry)
● Indirect Measurement = Using 2D
photo to generate 3D model
● Consist of 1) Camera System, 2) GPS
● Can produce photo (orthophoto)
● Can’t penetrate Vegetation
Methodology (Lidar)
● Direct Measurement = Using Laser
● Consist of 1) Laser System, 2) GPS,
3) IMU system
● Can’t Produce Photo (orthophoto)
● Has multi return system = can
penetrate vegetation

It's important to note that LIDAR pulses don't go through

vegetation canopy; they go around it. I.e., mapping terrain under
very dense vegetation is still not possible, even with LIDAR.

Extraction
Measurement

By providing an output in the

form of an actual topographic
map with high resolution, not
only the information you get,
but also accurate supporting
data for site management
actions, including the
calculation of mineral reserves
to the planning of the borehole
depth.
Heavy
Equipment
Monitoring

By using drones, the spatial

resolution obtained can be
maximized and the duration of
work can be more efficient,
making it easy for you to know
the actual condition of your
mining site in detail without
seeing the condition of the site
area that is difficult to be
assisted by other mapping
technologies, as well as
monitoring activities heavy
equipment in your mining area.

Landing: Belly Landing

Terra Wing Geo

A small flying wing engineered by Terra
Drone Corporation that is suitable for aerial
mapping and modeling activities. Despite its
small size, the drone is very durable and
easy to use. It is equipped with dual
frequency RTK/PPK positioning system to
provide data with high accuracy.

Weight: 18 kilograms

Terra LiDAR
This LiDAR system configuration is a perfect
solution to be operated in various situations
including very dense forest, windy shore, or
even high elevation location. Unlike other
LiDAR system, Terra LiDAR does not use IMU
for attitude determination but a set of single
frequency positioning system, allowing the
reduction of investment of the equipment.

Mining Drone Application
in Australia

2020/1
Terra Drone
Mining in Western Australia
● Western Australia’s mining industry produces $150 billion in exports
● Iron ore is the largest producer, contributing 54% of all mining exports
● Oil and Gas contributes 26%, followed by gold at 8%
● Many other commodities are mined Alumina, Nickel and base metals
● The largest producers are BHP Group, Rio Tinto, FMG and Newcrest
● There are approximately 1000 active mines in Western Australia
Terra Drone Australia
● We specialise in surveying, inspection and 3d modelling
● Our focus is predominately mining and utilities
● We operate both fixed wing and multi-rotor aircraft
● Payloads deliver high resolution stills, photogrammerty and lidar
● Data processing is undertaken in-house
Products and Applications

● Aerial imagery or orthomosaics

○ Mine planning, safety, presentations, GIS, reporting
● Digital Elevation Models
○ Mine planning, civil earthworks and volumetric calculations
● 3D Models
○ Used for visualisation, engineering, planning, safety,
measurement, design
● Ultra-high resolution still imagery and video
○ Used for asset inspection and condition monitoring
○ At height and confined space inspection
● Thermal imagery and video
○ Condition monitoring and preventative maintenance
● Non Destructive Testing
○ I.e. Ultrasonic Thickness for condition monitoring
Case Study - High Resolution Mine Aerial Survey

● Terra Drone Australia was engaged to

conduct a high accuracy, high resolution
aerial survey of mine processing and
train loading facility
● Both fixed wing and multi-rotor aircraft
were used to complete the scope
● Deliverables included an orthomosaic,
digital elevation model and site wide 3d
model
● The project resulted in 5x higher
resolution data than what was previously
available from manned aircraft survey.
Case Study - Structural Inspection of Iron Ore Bin

● Terra Drone Australia was engaged to

conduct a structural inspection of a
tertiary ore bin
● Typically rope access and a confined
space permit is required to access these
bins
● Terra Drone Australia ulilised an Elios
inspection drone to enter the bin and
capture high definition video and still
imagery
● Considerable time and cost saving over
conventional inspection method.
Case Study - 3D Model of Processing Infrastructure

● Terra Drone Australia was engaged to

conduct survey of iron ore processing
infrastructure
● The objective was to create a
photorealistic model of the infrastructure
as a proof of concept with view to
creating an entire mine site 3d model
using photogrammetry
● Terra Drone Australia ulilised an two
Inspire 2 multi-rotor drones and Drone
Harmony flight app to plan the capture of
the asset
● Both Reality Capture and Context
Capture were used to model the plant.

Model Unsupported
Underground Tunnel
with Ease and Safely

Underground tunnels can

become the most hazardous
environment for people to work.
There are some unsupported
area that have high risk for
incident. But, the formation of
rocks have to be monitored and
modeled precisely to
understand what is currently
happening in that mining site. By
using Terra Slam, an
anti-collision multirotor
equipped with mini LiDAR, the
modeling of the tunnels can be
easily done with a safely
manner.
