Students will view the image below and answer the following questions relating to the
image and topic:

 Can you identify the devices in the picture?
 What is the main similarity between the devices in the picture?
 Which word is used to describe things we can move around with?

Objective 1:

Explain the term Portable computers.

Students will be asked to formulate and share a definition for the term portable computer
based on the image they viewed or based on personal experience.
What are Portable computers?
A Portable computer is a computer that comes with a keyboard and display and
one which can be easily relocated or transported, although less convenient
compared to a notebook.

 They have lower specifications and are not well suited for full-time usage as they
are less ergonomic. However, they take less space than desktop computers and
come with most features found on a desktop.

Advantages and disadvantages of portable computer

Students will be asked to name some of the advantages and disadvantages of portable
computers.
Students will state whether the statements in the table below are advantages or
disadvantages of portable computers.

Students will be informed that there are various types of portable computers and the size
and weight of those computers are also different and many people use these portable
computers to do many types of work.

Portable Computer Description
Notebook An extremely lightweight personal computer. Notebook
computers typically weigh less than 6 pounds and are small
enough to fit easily in a briefcase.
Netbook A netbook is a small, light, low-power notebook computer
that has less processing power than a full-sized laptop but is
still suitable for word processing, running a Web browser
and connecting wirelessly to the Internet. Netbooks fall into
a category of what vendors refer to as “small form”
computers.
Laptop A laptop computer is a small personal computer. They are
designed to be more portable than traditional desktop
computers, with many of the same abilities.
Macbook The apple version of a laptop.

 Smart phone A combination cellphone and handheld computer that
created the greatest tech revolution since the Internet. A
smartphone does everything a personal computer can do,
and because of its mobility, much more.
Chromebook Chromebooks are a new type of computer designed to help
you get things done faster and easier. They run Chrome OS,
an operating system that has cloud storage, the best of
Google built-in, and multiple layers of security
Tablet Tablets are small, flat computers with touch screens that
are between a book and a magazine in size. They're like
large versions of a smartphone.
PDA (Personal Digital A personal digital assistant (PDA), also known as a
Assistant) handheld PC, is a variety of mobile devices which functions
as a personal information manager.
Wearable computer Wearable computer is a computer for carrying on the body,
for example, on the wrist. It allows you to work,
communicate, entertain right along ensuring mobility and
hands-free and/or eyes-free access to the device
