NECTRAL CENDENCY

MEASURE OF
CENTRAL TENDENCY
Objectives:
The learner will able to;
O demonstrates understanding of, uses and importance
of data collection/ gathering and the different forms of
data representation, measures of central tendency.

O collect data systematically and compute accurately

measures of central tendency and variability and apply
these appropriately in data analysis and interpretation
in different fields.

O calculates the measures of central tendency of

ungrouped data.
MEASURE OF
CENTRAL
TENDENCY
WHAT IS MEASURE OF CENTRAL
TENDENCY?

O Are the values that attempt to describe set

of data by identifying the central position
within that set of data.

O It consist of the Mean, Median, Mode, and

Midrange.
MEAN
O It is the average of a given set of data. It is obtained
by getting first the sum of all the values and then
dividing it by the total number of values.

To find the mean, use this formula:

∑𝒙
𝒙=
𝒏

Where: ∑ (summation of notation) – sum of the item values

x – are the values
n – total number of items
Examples:

1. The data represent the number of day offs per year for a sample
of individuals selected from nine different countries. Find the
mean.
20, 26, 40, 36, 23, 42, 35, 24, 30
20, 23, 24, 26, 30, 35, 36, 40, 42
Solution:
∑𝒙
𝒙=
𝒏
20+23+24+26+30+35+36+40+42
=
9
276
=
9

Hence, the mean of the number of

= 30.67 day offs is 30.67 days.
Example:
2. The grades in mathematics of grade 7 students are 82,79, 85,
79,78, 87, 88, 89, and 77. Find the mean.

∑𝒙
Solution: 𝒙= 𝒏

77, 78, 79, 79, 82, 85, 87, 88, 89

77+78+79+79+82+85+87+88+89
=
9
744
=
9
Hence, the mean of mathematics grade
= 82.67 of grade 7 is 82.67.
MEDIAN
O It is the middle number or value when all the values
in a set of data are arranged in ascending order.

O It is an average of two middle values if a data set

contains even number of values. The median will
either be a specific value or will fall between two
values.
Example:
1. The number of rooms in the seven hotels in
downtown is 713, 300, 618, 595, 311, 401, and
292. Find the median.

Solution:

713, 300, 618, 595, 311, 401, 292

292, 300, 311, 401, 595, 618. 713

MEDIAN

Hence, the median is 401 rooms

Example:

2. The number of tornadoes that have occurred in the United

States over an 8-year period follows 684, 764, 656, 702, 856,
1133, 1132, 1303. Find the median.

Solution:
684, 764, 656, 702, 856, 1133, 1132, 1303
656, 684, 702, 764, 856, 1132, 1133, 1303

764 +856 1620

MD = = = 810
2 2
The median number of
tornadoes is 810.
Example:
3. The sizes of 8 classes selected at random are: 40, 39,
41, 48, 45, 46, 42, and 49. find the median.

Solution:
40, 39, 41, 48, 45, 46, 42, 49
39, 40, 41, 42, 45, 46, 48, 49
𝟒𝟐+𝟒𝟓
=
𝟐
𝟖𝟕
=
𝟐
= 43.75
MODE
O The value that occurs frequently in the set of
data is called mode.

O Kinds of modes:
• Unimodal – 1 mode
• Bimodal – 2 modes
• Trimodal – 3 modes
• Multimodal – 4 or more modes
Example:

1. Find the mode of the signing bonuses of eight NFL players

for a specific year. The bonuses in millions of dollars are 18.0,
14.0, 34.5, 10, 11.3, 10, 12.4,10.

Solution:
18.0, 14.0, 34.5, 10, 11.3, 10, 12.4,10.
10, 10, 10, 11.3, 12.4, 14.0, 18.0, 34.5
MODE

$10 millions is the mode and it is

Unimodal.
Example:

2. The size of 8 classes selected at random are: 40, 39, 41,

48, 45, 46, 42, 49.

Solution:
40, 39, 41, 48, 45, 46, 42, 49.
39, 40, 41, 42, 45, 46, 48, 49

There is no mode in the set

of data.
MIDRANGE
O It is define as the sum of lowest and highest value
in the data set, divided by two. The symbol MR is
used for the midrange.

𝐿𝑜𝑤𝑒𝑠𝑡 𝑣𝑎𝑙𝑢𝑒+𝐻𝑖𝑔ℎ𝑒𝑠𝑡 𝑣𝑎𝑙𝑢𝑒

MR =

Example:

1. In the last two winter seasons, the city of Brownsville,

Minnesota, reported these numbers of waterline breaks
per month. Find the midrange. 2, 3, 6, 8, 4, 1

Solution:
1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 8,

1+8 9
MR = = = 4.5
