Landscape Painting Phase I:

Tunnel

OVERVIEW
In this lesson, I will go over the compositional stem–the tunnel. This plan hinges on a tunnel-like
series of geometric shapes such as arches, squares, and various others. The center of interest is viewed
through this tunnel most commonly formed using archways, trees, etc. More specifically, a pathway in
a forest with the effects of overhanging branches and foliage create an archway in which the viewer
may see through to the center of interest. Sit back and enjoy as I demonstrate three small paintings
from some of my travels.

Landscape Painting Phase I:

ASSIGNMENT 10: TUNNEL

In this assignment, I will create two small paintings of this motif working from reference I shot–one
from Morocco and another I photographed in the High Sierras.

Part 1: Prepare your board with the assistance of the handouts. Move on to using the provided
photo reference to sketch in your drawing. (Do not spray fix the drawing.)

Part 2: Watch the video and follow my lead.

Part 3: Begin your painting.

1) Lay in your #5 wash.

2) Start building up your darkest darks.

3) Work the mid-tones up to your lightest lights.

Note: This stem can be used in all areas of your art, concepting, illustration, fine art, etc. I have used
it with great success over the years. It is often advisable to not make the center of interest right in the
middle of the opening.

Part 4: Finish.

1) As you near the finish, you can start doing some blending.

2) Each one may take you 60 to 90 minutes if you are new to gouache.
