Module 6 Assignment:
Career Plan Template
Section 1: Creating your BHAG
Following the information in the “Good to Great Connections” PowerPoint presentation and all
of the additional information provided under the Module 4 content area, and taking your Personal
Mission Statement development efforts into consideration, carefully develop your own personal
long term BHAG (***one amazingly HUGE, your world changing goal***). The timeframe for
your BHAG is 10-25 years out, however it will depend upon your age. For example, a 55 year
old person might be closer to the 10 year BHAG, whereas a 30 year old or younger person
should be considering a BHAG 25 years out. This BHAG may be related to your overall
life/lifestyle aspirations, or it could be related to some organizational, protean, or
entrepreneurial vision you have for the future. Dig deep and and go beyond the job. That is up to
you. What it needs to be is BIG! HUGE! REALLY HAIRY! STRETCH YOURSELF! LOOK
BEYOND GRADUATE DEGREE! LOOK BEYOND A JOB! HOW WILL YOU MAKE A
DIFFERENCE IN THIS WORLD???? I RECOMMEND WE MEET TO DISCUSS IT TO
ENSURE ITS HUGENESS.

Answer the following:

1) What is your BHAG (***one amazingly HUGE, your world changing goal***)?

Through continued education, experience, and training, I will redirect the path for women
within and entering the construction industry to be a more inclusive, safe, and equal
opportunistic field for future generations.

2) Why is this your BHAG?

Coming from a small town, I am very conscience of the trade/construction world and I
know many, many people who have worked in the industry for their whole lives. When I
entered the workforce, I found myself in corporate construction and have made it my
career. Being a female (and young, at that), I have found that I do not have the same
voice or opportunities as my ale coworkers. I have worked for two different contractors
within different trades and in different states and both companies are characteristic of the
same gender inequalities. Furthermore, I have spoken with several women who work for
other contractors who experience these same issues. Additionally, voice and opportunity
are not the only problem areas as discrimination, disrespect, profiling, and harassment are
all very prevalent in the every day life of many female workers within construction. As

1
someone who is looking to grow their career and take stand within top leadersip of a
company, I find it necessary to create a safe and inclusive environment for women to
work every day and be treated as their male counterparts are. On the more personal side, I
was raised by a single mom and independence was engrained in me from a very young
age. Having these “female empowerment” values, it is very important to me that I am
able to excel in everything that I do and as it currently stands, it is very difficult for
women to move to the top of the construction chain.

3) How does your BHAG align with your vision statement from Module 4?

My vision statement: “My life has been a series of small wins and big failures, but
through the power to persevere and overcome, my life will become a collection of
massive success and quality lessons learned.”

I believe that my BHAG does align with my vision statement in the way that improving
the outlook of women within construction is a huge task that, if successful, would be a
massive success that would affect millions of women and generations to come.
Construction is a huge industry that is only growing and opening the doors for inclusion
would mean creating more jobs, creating more education opportunities, possible new
innovations, and plentiful other opportunities to improve the world of construction and
thus the lives of the general population.

4) How does your BHAG align with your mission statement from Module 4?

My mission statement: “I am committed to remaining true to myself in my journey to

impact other people in a positive way in an effort to leave this world better than I found
it.”

My BHAG aligns with my mission statement because paving the way for women within
construction would require genuinity and consistent effort. I believe that making the
industry more gender-inclusive would not only be a major win for construction, but also
for women’s rights/equality in general. Construction is historically a male-dominated
industry and it is still very heavily male saturated, but changing the norm to an equal
opportunity industry would show commitment to the equality movement across all
industries/social issues.

5) List your top five (5) obstacles in order from number 5 being least difficult and
number 1 being most difficult you need to overcome in order to obtain your BHAG
and explain the relevance of each one.

Introvertedness – Most Difficult – I am extremely introverted and I allow my social

anxiety to hold me back from many things. In order to obtain my BHAG (and even my
short-term goals), I need to overcome this by exerting myself into uncomfortable

2
situations and conversations to open up opportunities for myself to eventually hold the
position and power to obtain my BHAG.

Lack of Networks – Obstacle 2 – Because of my introverted personality and my limited

experience, I have not had much opportunity to network and establish connections that I
believe would be necessary in order to obtain my BHAG. I could overcome this by
utilizing professional networking platforms more (such as LinkedIn) and finding
conferences/training to attend with other women in construction, women in leadership,
etc.

Self Doubt – Obstacle 3 – I often doubt myself because I feel that I do not have the
experience or knowledge it takes to reach my goals. In order to obtain my BHAG, I
would have to overcome this and I could do so by taking risks in my career and taking
advantage of opportunities as they come instead of shying away in fear.

Exposure – Obstacle 4 – The company that I currently work for is on the smaller side and
it is a specialized trade, so I have limited exposure to the rest of the construction industry,
especially in my current role. Obtaining my BHAG would require that I overcome this
obstacle in order to be inclusive of all women within construction, regardless of trade.

Leadership Experience – Least Difficult – Since I am almost complete with my

Organizational Leadership degree, obtaining leadership experience will be the least
difficult obstacle as I have the opportunity to advance into a leadership role within my
organization rather quickly and will be able to strengthen my skills before moving into a
higher leadership role which will be required to obtain my BHAG.

3
Section 2: Career Vision
Consider your long-term vision for your career. Respond to the following questions, and make
connections to your personal mission statement, your BHAG(s), the themes you developed in
Module 4, and the textbook/supplemental readings (as applicable).

Answer the following:

1) Analyze the type of career you want to have, in terms of an organizational career or
a protean career, make sure it is clear you understand the concepts as outlined in
the textbook. Why?

A protean career is more self-directed while an organizational career is directed in terms

of organizational structure and leadership. I think of protean as an entrepreneurial career
and organizational as a corporate career. I think an organizational career would benefit
me best as I work well under the direction and structure of an organization’s overall goal.
I don’t think I have the personality to be successful in a protean venture.

2) Analyze your career with an explanation as one that moves you up the organization
or one you develop seeking alternative career paths. If you see yourself taking an
alternative career path, which one(s) sound the most likely? Why?

I can see myself staying within the construction industry, but I can also see myself
leaving. My true passion is Criminal Justice and I may pursue that after finishing my
degree in Organizational Leadership. Both industries are male-dominated and I feel that
my BHAG is applicable to both, so in obtaining top leadership positions within either
industry, I would be in the position to push female inclusion from the top down. My
current position only allows for advancement directly into leadership, so I am confident
that I will be able to obtain that position and continue to advance vertically within the
company as I gained more experience.

3) Discuss and explain if you see yourself working an alternative or flexible work
schedule/arrangement? If so, which ones and why?

I currently work in a traditional office setting, but I am not opposed to working remotely
or working in a position that requires frequent travel. Right now, I work 6:30AM-3:30PM
and I am not willing to really work different hours or weekends. I would actually like to
be in a position that allows for travel as I would be able to meet more people, expand my
network, and discover new opportunities.

4) Research and post current, or past, job postings from your local area, across the
country, or from around the world which illustrate how you might reach your
BHAG. Be sure to provide the Job Title, a small description and why it supports

4
your BHAG when you provide the URL. Websites such as CareerBuilder, Monster,
or Indeed might be a good place to begin. Also, career-specific websites such as
SHRM.org or AICPA.org often have job postings. Provide 2 listings for each of the
following time periods:

Section 3: Long-Term Strategy
Develop a strategy for moving toward your ideal future work/life situation and the realization of
your BHAG(s). Consider the timeframe for your BHAG(s). Provide a vivid description of life
“the way it will be” once your BHAG is realized.

1) Critically think about and then list out (not a narrative format) the interim steps or
milestones you have laid out for yourself that will aid you in reaching your BHAG
(you should have at least 10 to earn a rating of excellent and be referenced by time)

1) Earn my degree in Organizational Leadership from ASU.

2) Overcome anxiety and better my communication skills.
3) Alert my current ledaers of my interest within leadership.
4) Obtain a leadership position within the office I currently work in.
5) Develop my leadership skills through hands on experience and identify my
weaknesses.
6) Expand my network and working knowledge of the construction industry through
further trainings, conferences, seminars, etc.
7) Advance within leadership to a higher ranking role either within my organization or
another organization within construction.
8) Analyze the major obstacles in construction for gender inclusion and find (possibly
with a team) solutions for inclusion and implementation.
9) Reach out to other leaders within my network/construction for their input on the
subject and possible assistance with rolling out trainings to employees.
10) Maintain an open mind (and open door policy) for subordinates and colleagues to
share concerns, findings, and improvements so that the endeavor is a long-term
success.

2) In addition to career-related roles, consider your other life roles in relation to your
career goals. Revisit your responses to the Identities Exercise that you completed in
Module 1 of the course. Based on your long-term strategy what are the 3 most
precious things you are willing to sacrifice, besides time, to achieve your BHAG?
Why?

Relocation – If the right opportunity presented itself, I would be willing to relocate.

Moving to Arizona was a very big goal for me and it took a long time for me to get here,
but I would be willing to move if it meant reaching the bigger goals I have set for myself.
The opportunity would have to be much bigger than my short-term goals and it would
have to support my BHAG goal for long-term success. I am not willing to relocate for
immediate short-term success.

Organizational Size – I have always favored larger roganizations for job security, but if
given the opportunity to advance to top leadership within a smaller organization, I would

10
be willing to sacrifice the sense of job security and all of the things that come with bigger
organizations such as stock options. Although, my BHAG impact may end up being
smaller in the scenario, I believe that it would still impact the construction industry
through the people that come and go through my organization.

Comfort – Currently, my job is strictly desk work, but I understand that I may have to
sacfrice my office time for frequent field visits in order for my BHAG to be most
successful. While I can be intimidated by job sites, I would be willing to put myself in
uncomfortable situations in order to support my goal.

11
Section 4: The one to two year plan
Using a SMART goals-based approach, as well as project planning and management skill best
practices, create a detailed project plan for at least two specific goals. At least one must be
related to your long-term BHAG. The other may be related to some other aspect of your career
development or career-life integration. Both of these goals need to be things that you are
passionate about accomplishing.

Your selected goals and SMART plan (see SMART goal information provided in the module)
should be structured based on a one to two-year timeline. It should include specific milestones,
action items, sub-tasks as well as task-related interdependencies as applicable. With respect to
each goal, critically think about what specifically are the things you will do in the next one to
two years to achieve these goals.

Develop a clear and detailed SMART plan, with facilitating goals and steps/actions required
to accomplish your selected goals. It should be evident, by looking at the format and structure
of your plan, that you have developed some significant skills respect to project management.
Include Gantt charts (T) or other visual project representations as you see fit, and be sure to
address your approach to tracking/measuring your progress (M).

1) What is your #1 Goal? (at least one of the following must be related to your BHAG)

Obtain a leadership role within my current organization.

a. I aspire to obtain a role within leadership with my current organization to begin

my journey as a female leader in construction.

b. Create a list of short-term and long-term goals for myself and work towards them
through company offered training and further education.

c. Completing my degree in Organizational Leadership makes this possible with my

current experience and standing with my organization.

d. This matters to me because this entry-level leadership role will prepare me for
more substantial roles in the future and help propel me towards my bigger goals.

e. I expect to obtain a leadership role within the next year.

12
2) What is your #2 Goal? (at least one of these must be related to your BHAG)

Criminal Justice

a. Pursure an additional BA in Criminal Justice following my current program.

b. I will complete my courses within a timely manner in order to graduate quickly

and move into a the Criminal Justice field.

c. Earning my degree in Criminal Justice will give me the opportunity to enter the
field and discover where I fit.

d. My biggest passion is Criminal Justice and I have always reverted back to that
during my studies.

e. I expect to start on this program immediately and graduate with my BA in

Criminal Justice by the end of 2024.
