Module 6 Assignment:
Career Plan Template
Section 1: Creating your BHAG
Following the information in the “Good to Great Connections” PowerPoint presentation and all
of the additional information provided under the Module 4 content area, and taking your Personal
Mission Statement development efforts into consideration, carefully develop your own personal
long term BHAG (***one amazingly HUGE, your world changing goal***). The timeframe for
your BHAG is 10-25 years out, however it will depend upon your age. For example, a 55 year
old person might be closer to the 10 year BHAG, whereas a 30 year old or younger person
should be considering a BHAG 25 years out. This BHAG may be related to your overall
life/lifestyle aspirations, or it could be related to some organizational, protean, or
entrepreneurial vision you have for the future. Dig deep and and go beyond the job. That is up to
you. What it needs to be is BIG! HUGE! REALLY HAIRY! STRETCH YOURSELF! LOOK
BEYOND GRADUATE DEGREE! LOOK BEYOND A JOB! HOW WILL YOU MAKE A
DIFFERENCE IN THIS WORLD???? I RECOMMEND WE MEET TO DISCUSS IT TO
ENSURE ITS HUGENESS.
1) What is your BHAG (***one amazingly HUGE, your world changing goal***)?
My BHAG is that I will be the VP of the Human Resource Department in which I will be
in charge of all the operations of an adolescent home I will build along side my business
partner. An adolescent home catered to children in the foster system in which we will
provide in house therapy, animal therapy and provide a safe haven for those children who
are having trouble being fostered or will soon age out of the system.
I have always wanted to become a foster parent and make a diference in the lives of
children who were not given a chance or mistreated by those who were suppose to love
them the most. As I got older, I fell in love with Human Resources and the endless
possibilities to make a difference within that department. About three years ago I met a
now close friend who is a therapist for children who get court ordered therapy. When I
talked to her one day about my indecisiveness on what to go back to school for, and
telling her the two things I would love to do, we came up with this idea together. Her
using her many years in the field of child therapy and my growing knowledge of running
1
a business and how to be a great leader, we came up with this idea. It will allow me to put
my two passions together and trully make a difference.
3) How does your BHAG align with your vision statement from Module 4?
Keeping my morals in mind I will strive to live an unselfish life by putting those I love
before myself. I will not expect from others anything more or less than I expect from
myself.
My BHAG aligns with my vision because I will be putting others first by ultimately
living an unselfish life. Dedicating myself professionally to making a diference in
someone else’s life, children and adults, even if it is in the smallest of ways. Working
towards this goal with a partner can be difficult, so I do plan on only expecting from my
partner what I expect from myself. This way, neither her nor I, put in more work than the
other and it is a true fifty/fifty collaboration.
4) How does your BHAG align with your mission statement from Module 4?
I am dedicated to being the best leader I can be within all aspects of my life. To inspire
those around me and learn throughout my journey while showing kindness and empathy
to those around me.
By being the best leader I can be, I will hopefully lead this adolescent home to success.
Showing others how to lead with empathy and humility. To also inspire others to make a
difference and show kindess to these children who possibly have never known it. This
statement will remind me that there is always something to be learned and grow from.
5) List your top five (5) obstacles in order from number 5 being least difficult and
number 1 being most difficult you need to overcome in order to obtain your BHAG
and explain the relevance of each one.
Family
I hate to admit it, but I do feel like family will be my biggest obstacle. I am currently
growing my family and I have decided to take a break from school and work to focus on
them. Family is so important to me, perhaps more important than reaching this goal. If I
am honest, this reality scares me, as this goal is something I really do hope to accomplish
one day. Although, I do have to wonder, will I end up loving taking care of my family
more than the love, passion and desire I have to help and make a difference?
Knowledge
Not only will I need to have HR knowledge, I will have to become educated on how to
run a business, the legalities of running an adolescent home and all the licensing we will
need to house children, and offer all the amazing services we plan to. I am afraid it will
all be to much and I will eventually let something slip through the cracks. Or I will
simply just never actually learn how to do any of it.
2
Finance
To start something like this, even if we start small, we need financing. Neither I, nor my
partner are in any financial situation to start this up with our own money. We will most
likely have to look for a loan of some sort or look into non-profit financing. This can
become extremely scary for both of us who have families to think about. What if this goal
ends up financially ruining both of us? I am not sure if we are both ready to fully comit to
that.
Fear
As with any new venture, fear comes with it. Fear of failure, fear of harming more than
helping and also the fear of not actually liking it. Which means I would have waisted
both my own time and those involved. Mostly I am afraid to let myself down and prove
that small, annoying voice in my head right. Which tells me that I do not have what it
takes. Fear is a very tough obstacle to over come, but not impossible.
Confidence
The least of these obstacles I believe to be confidence. I know that if I work hard and stay
focused, I can accomplish this BHAG, but there are moments where I am not so
confident. I am afraid that in one of those moments, I will choose to stop working hard
and not know how to get that motivation and confidence back. I think that this is the least
difficult compared to the others because I can choose to stop all negativity and only think
positively. There are allot of methods and motivational workshops now a days that can
aid in this department.
3
Section 2: Career Vision
Consider your long-term vision for your career. Respond to the following questions, and make
connections to your personal mission statement, your BHAG(s), the themes you developed in
Module 4, and the textbook/supplemental readings (as applicable).
1) Analyze the type of career you want to have, in terms of an organizational career or
a protean career, make sure it is clear you understand the concepts as outlined in
the textbook. Why?
I have so much to learn, which means I will most likely have to work within an
organization to gain the hands on experience. I would want to work with an organization
in which I agree with their mision and values. Ones that I know I can fully adopt and
believe in. This is where my score for the Career and Life Orientation Index comes in. I
scored a 3.33 which landed me in the Moderateely Organizational category. I didn’t
understand why at first, but after going through my BHAG, I realized that I need to start
here first and work my way up to a protean career. I hope to like the company I work for
while keeping in mind that it is not my final goal.
2) Analyze your career with an explanation as one that moves you up the organization
or one you develop seeking alternative career paths. If you see yourself taking an
alternative career path, which one(s) sound the most likely? Why?
I would like to start off in an entry level position within the Human Resource department
and slowly work my way up the ladder. This method would allow me to fully understand
and learn as much as possible while also allowing me to inegrate my themes of listening,
keeping an open mind, learning and leading by example
3) Discuss and explain if you see yourself working an alternative or flexible work
schedule/arrangement? If so, which ones and why?
I would prefer to work remotely as I do have small children, of course this would have to
be flexible in order to be available to take my oldest to and from school. Once all my
children are in school I would not mind a more stable time frame and no longer do
remote. With the pandemic more and more organziations are going remote which gives
me lots of hope that I will find the right fit for me.
4) Research and post current, or past, job postings from your local area, across the
country, or from around the world which illustrate how you might reach your
BHAG. Be sure to provide the Job Title, a small description and why it supports
your BHAG when you provide the URL. Websites such as CareerBuilder, Monster,
or Indeed might be a good place to begin. Also, career-specific websites such as
4
SHRM.org or AICPA.org often have job postings. Provide 2 listings for each of the

have opened our business. It will be small, maybe only fostering five to six
children and hoping to gain traction little by little. I will be in charge of running
the business side of this home and all HR related content.
ii. Busines Partner, Over seeing the opertions of the adolescent home from a
distance. Ensuring everything is running smoothly and how it should be.
If we are not barely opening this home, I hope to have already had a few
years under us to where we can watch and manage from a distasnce and
have a group of leaders doing all the inside work. We would only be
present for serious matters and over seeing from a distance. This will
allow me time to actually spend time with the children in hopes to show
them love and care to make a difference in their lives.
7
Section 3: Long-Term Strategy
Develop a strategy for moving toward your ideal future work/life situation and the realization of
your BHAG(s). Consider the timeframe for your BHAG(s). Provide a vivid description of life
“the way it will be” once your BHAG is realized.
1) Critically think about and then list out (not a narrative format) the interim steps or
milestones you have laid out for yourself that will aid you in reaching your BHAG
(you should have at least 10 to earn a rating of excellent and be referenced by time)
8
8) Start the financial aspects of our Adolesent home- 2030
At this time frame I hope to be learning and starting the process to open our
adolsenet home. Getting the finances and facility secured.
10) Rrunning a sucessful business and changing lives one at a time 2035-2040
In this time frame I hope to already had the doors open to our adolescent home
for a few years. Encountering and positively impacting many children along the
way. I hope to still be learning and growing while finding ways to inegrate my
family to be more involved in my passion.
2) In addition to career-related roles, consider your other life roles in relation to your
career goals. Revisit your responses to the Identities Exercise that you completed in
Module 1 of the course. Based on your long-term strategy what are the 3 most
precious things you are willing to sacrifice, besides time, to achieve your BHAG?
Why?
Traveling: One big goal I have always had is to travel the world alongside my husband.
This is something I would gladly give up for my career goals. I believe that feeling
satisfied and like I made a difference and fulfilled my duty as a human being is much
more important than seeing the world. My husband and I both have career goals that we
are currently working on and traveling would only set us back with time and financially.
So I think it would be a sacrifice worth making.
Sleep: To be perfectly honest, I love sleep, even before pregnancy. I love to sleep in and
take naps during the day. This is something I will not be able to do for much longer and a
luxury I will definitely need to sacrifice if I want to reach my goals. Even though
sleeping is needed for the body, too much of it can be harmful plus it is precious time I
am waisting. Time I could be focusing on my career and goals.
Salary: Achieving my BHAG will mean I will stop earning a set income. With an
organization, my pay is secure and I know what I will be recieiving in my check in order
to keep my finaces secured. Opening my business, I will not have a set income, if
anything I would have to be fully prepared to loose money in the beginning. This is a
scarafice I believe to be worth it because the reward in the end is well worth it.
9
Section 4: The one to two year plan
Using a SMART goals-based approach, as well as project planning and management skill best
practices, create a detailed project plan for at least two specific goals. At least one must be
related to your long-term BHAG. The other may be related to some other aspect of your career
development or career-life integration. Both of these goals need to be things that you are
passionate about accomplishing.
Your selected goals and SMART plan (see SMART goal information provided in the module)
should be structured based on a one to two-year timeline. It should include specific milestones,
action items, sub-tasks as well as task-related interdependencies as applicable. With respect to
each goal, critically think about what specifically are the things you will do in the next one to
two years to achieve these goals.
Develop a clear and detailed SMART plan, with facilitating goals and steps/actions required
to accomplish your selected goals. It should be evident, by looking at the format and structure
of your plan, that you have developed some significant skills respect to project management.
Include Gantt charts (T) or other visual project representations as you see fit, and be sure to
address your approach to tracking/measuring your progress (M).
1) What is your #1 Goal? (at least one of the following must be related to your BHAG)
My first goal is to gain a job in the Human Resource department for an organization that I
admire and can fully support their mission and values. A company that I would enjoy
going above and beyond for, and one that is considerate and inclusive.
a. Specific
i. By the end of 2023 I will start looking into job openings and really doing
my research on each company. I believe that I should love and want to
work for the company as much as they would like to hire me. So doing
background research, looking at reviews and ensuring the company is one
I see myself with long term is essential. I will then begin applying and
interviewing at various locations.
b. Measurable
c. Attainable
i. I have worked for the same company for the past eight years. I have loved
the company and what they stand for the entire eight years which I why I
10
have stuck with them for so long. Keeping this in mind, I am sure I can
find another organization which I love just as much within the job field I
want.
d. Relevant
e. Time-Based
vi. September-October 2023- Pass the probation period and decide if this is
the organization for me.
11
12
2) What is your #2 Goal? (at least one of these must be related to your BHAG)
My second goal is to go back to school and gain my masters in either Human Resources
or Business.
a. S: By the end of 2023 I will have enrolled in a graduate program and begin my
journey to my masters degree.
b. M: I will know this goal has been met when I am walking down the stage
accepting my degree
c. A: I fnished my bachelors degree with a son under eight, pregnant, working full
time and during a pandemic.
e. T:
i. January 2023- Start looking at masters programs and deciding what I want
to do
13
iii. Mid 2023- Apply for grad school
