Roles and Responsibilities of a Nursing Clinical Instructor

A clinical instructor is responsible for instructing and evaluating the clinical training of
health sciences students. They conduct lectures and training in the classroom and health
care facilities, testing the students' knowledge by performing actual clinical duties and
medical procedures under their supervision. The following are the roles and
responsibilities of a nursing CI:
• Directs, manages, and evaluates student learning in the clinical setting.
• Prepares their teaching activities and approaches specific to the level of the learner and
course’s outcomes.
• Assists the student in integration of theory and practice, specific to the course’s learning
activities and level of the learner.
• Evaluates the student’s development of clinical reasoning skills.
• Facilitates clinical seminars
• Is available for consultation to the student in the clinical and academic setting.
• Directly observes and guides students’ learning activities with clients
• Evaluates students in clinical as related to the college outcomes.
• Participates as a member of the faculty in the course’s development and evaluation
activities for the specific course.
• Provides timely and ongoing feedback to individual student, group, and faculty.
• Evaluates clinical teaching effectiveness and provides feedback to the faculty.
• Provides grades and feedback to the faculty and college.
• Collaborates with the affiliated hospital and staff so that the students can practice and
perform their activities.
• Checks and grades numerous papers, quizzes, exams, and projects
• Creates TLGs, test questions, and projects that are related and important for the
student’s learning.
• Is a resource for nurses for educational opportunities for their professional development.
• Serves as a liaison between the affiliated hospital and school of nursing
