SIZING OF WATER HEATER

Example 1: A typical family of seven ( 7 )

Computation: Based on the number of occupant or number of persons, use HOT WATER DEMAND PER
PERSON CHART ( Table # 7 ) as your guide.

Hot water requirement per day ………….. 7 x 40 = 280 gals. per hr.
Max. demand gals. per hour ………….. 280 x 0.15 = 42 gals. per hr.
Storage capacity gals. per hour ………….. 281 x 0.20 = 56 gals. per hr.
Heating capacity gals. per hour ………….. 282 x 0.15 = 42 gals. per hr.
USAGE FACTOR is 40%
Performance capacity : Hot water rate 42 x 0.40 = 16.8 gals. per hour

From the SUPPLY OF HOT WATER GALLONS CHART ( Table # 8 ), looking at hot water rate,
16.8 gals per hr. falls under the range of 20.3 - 24.5, thus, 12 US GALLONS is required.

For heating element and ampere requirement refer to Table # 9, thus at 12 US GALLONS
the heater capacity is 2500 watts, 8.1 A @ 220 Volts.

USE: EWH 12 water heater with capacity of 12 gallons, 2500 watts, 8.1 A, 220VAC.

Example 2: A motel with twenty (20) bedrooms complete with the following fixtures: 10 showers,
20 private lavatory, 4 public lavatory, 2 slop sink, 3 kitchen sink and 1 dish washer.

Computation: Based on the number of fixtures installed, use HOT WATER DEMAND PER
FIXTURE CHART ( Table # 6 ) as your guide.

10 shower ………….. 10 x 75 = 750 gals. per hr.

20 private lavatory ………….. 20 x 2 = 40 gals. per hr.
4 public lavatory ………….. 4 x 8 = 32 gals. per hr.
2 slop sink ………….. 2 x 30 = 60 gals. per hr.
3 kitchen sink ………….. 3 x 20 = 60 gals. per hr.
1 dishwasher ………….. 1 x 150 = 150 gals. per hr.
TOTAL ………….. ………….. = 1092 gals. per hr.

Possible max. demands gals per hour 1091 x 0.25 = 273

Storage tank capacity 273 x 0.80 = 218
USAGE FACTOR is 70%
Performance capacity : Hot water rate 218 x 0.70 = 120 gals. per hour

From the SUPPLY OF HOT WATER GALLONS CHART ( Table # 8 ), looking at hot water rate,
120 gals per hr. falls under the range of 161 - 170, thus, 120 US GALLONS is required.

For heating element and ampere requirement refer to Table # 9, thus at 120 US GALLONS
the heater capacity is 2 - 6000 watts, 55 A @ 220 Volts.

USE: EWH 120 water heater with capacity of 120 gallons, 2 - 6000 watts, 55 A, 220VAC.
SIZING OF WATER HEATER

Example 3: Typical residence with the following fixtures: 5 buth tub,

7 private lavatory, 4 laundry tray, 1 dishwasher, 1 kitchen sink, 2 slop sink and 5 shower.

Computation: Based on the number of fixtures installed, use HOT WATER DEMAND PER
FIXTURE CHART ( Table # 6 ) as your guide.

5 bath tubs ………….. 5 x 20 = 100 gals. per hr.

7 private lavatory ………….. 7 x 2 = 14 gals. per hr.
4 laundry tray ………….. 4 x 20 = 80 gals. per hr.
1 dishwasher ………….. 1 x 15 = 15 gals. per hr.
1 kitchen sink ………….. 1 x 10 = 10 gals. per hr.
2 slop sink ………….. 2 x 15 = 30 gals. per hr.
5 shower ………….. 5 x 75 = 375 gals. per hr.
TOTAL ………….. ………….. 624 gals. per hr.

Possible max. demands gals per hour 624 x 0.30 = 185

Storage tank capacity 185 x 0.70 = 130
USAGE FACTOR is 70%
Performance capacity : Hot water rate 130 x 0.40 = 52 gals. per hour

From the SUPPLY OF HOT WATER GALLONS CHART ( Table # 8 ), looking at hot water rate,
52 gals per hr. falls under the range of 56 - 63, thus, 40 US GALLONS is required.

For heating element and ampere requirement refer to Table # 9, thus at 40 US GALLONS
heater capacity is 5000 watts, 22.8 A @ 220 Volts.

USE: EWH 40 water heater with capacity of 40 gallons, 5000 watts, 22.8 A, 220VAC.
