Document Development Exposition: Instructions and Usability Test Script

Explain in detail your document’s development from planning to finish, describing your
challenges, how you overcame them, and what you learned.

Planning
During the planning of this paper, I had just recently used Clemson’s 3D printing lab for the first time,
so I had a pretty good idea on the instructions of how to get certified and print 3D objects fresh in my
head. I recognized that my instructions were going to be a little on the technical side, so a lot of my
planning was making sure that doing 3D Printing instructions were not going to be too complicated
for this type of project, and luckily, I got an idea of how to make it less complicated by orienting only
for Clemson students. I ended up changing most of the styling throughout the drafts, so the planning
styling is a bit outdated.

First Draft (for peer editing)

The hardest part about the first draft was making it so the reader did not have to be tech-savvy in
order to understand the directions. This required me to dumb down a lot of the information and
include text stating that further reading could be acquired throughout the instructions. I also
included several subsections in to explain tips or other minor things (which were somewhat
unnecessary and removed for the final). The actual number of steps ended up being fairly long due
to the complexity of the task at hand, but I believe I shortened the steps enough to make it
understandable to anybody in any major.

Second Draft (for your packet)

A lot of the feedback I received for my first draft was minimal, so I ended up not changing very much.
Minor color and text changes to make it easier to read and follow, but other than that, the first draft
and second draft were practically similar.

Final Draft (for your portfolio)

I ended up massively changing the visual flare of the instructions in the final draft by adding a color
theme of orange and purple, adding a border, and changing the title font and style. I also made the
steps much more straight forward by removing sub steps and extra information to better help the
flow and tone of the instructions. Lastly, I did some minor editing of the text and pictures to help the
flow and look.
