Communication

What is Communication?
Communication is a process by which people send messages or
exchange ideas or thoughts through verbal and non-verbal manner.
Communication in Latin word is “Communicare”
Communication is:
❖ to share
❖ to unite
❖ to join
❖ to have things in common
The nature of communication refers to the characteristics of features
of communication.

Nature of Communication
1. Communication is Schemata-driven – Communication makes you
send to r receive messages from somebody by activating your
schemata experiences or background knowledge that you have
stored in your brain since your early developmental stages.
2. Communication is an interpretative act. – The only person who
knows the exact or full meaning of the message transmitted is the
sender or speaker. Being the creator or source of the ideas, he
has the absolute knowledge about his message.
3. Communication does not guarantee a direct or automatic link
between two minds – These forms of knowledge become
meaningful only to others when you initiate communication with
them.
4. Communication is active, powerful, or forceful –
Communication is active since there is an exchange of
messages between the sender and the receiver, and dynamic
because it is prone to changes.

Communication is powerful since whatever you said, it has an


effect to the receiver of the message.

Communication is forceful since everything you said requires


an equal reaction or feedback. Some messages has demand
attention and actions.
5. Communication is symbolic – For non verbal communication, you
resort to bodily actions (gestures, eye movements, posture, facial
expressions) voice quality, space and time elements to stand for
the ideas you want to express.
6. Communication always results into something – Two or more
persons participate in any commutative act. The first, expresses
or sends a message; the second, responds or reacts to the
message.
7. Communication is irreversible – since whatever you said done,
you can never take it back.
8. Communication is contextual – An exchange of views, ideas or
feelings doesn’t involve the sender and the receiver, but also
other aspects of communication setting like time, place, topic,
occasion, purpose, and manner of communication.
Example: Two people are talking on the phone, the receiver of
the message cannot hear the sender properly since the sender of
the message is in a crowded and noisy place.

The sending and receiving of messages is affected by the


situation or environment from which the two people
communicating are into.
9. Communication is ethical – since there is a proper and moral
standards when we communicate with other people.
10. Communication is influenced by media and technology – since
we use gadgets, and other media to send our messages.
11. Communication is a process – There is a series of actions or
steps taken in order to successfully communicate. It involves
several components such as the sender of communication, the
actual message being sent, the encoding of message, the receiver
and the decoding of message.
