Narrative Week 3
This week has been a little different than the past two weeks. I was expecting us to start a
new unit; however, a ton of teachers have been out leaving us to pick up extra classes. We have
had extra exploratory classes every day of this week. Exploratory classes are the middle school’s
electives that each student has, and they have two each semester. Some exploratory class options
are PE, chorus, dance, band, ROTC, etc. With the extra classes each day, there can sometimes be
up to 150 students at a time. Although it has been a challenge we have had to tackle this week, it
has been beneficial to see and learn how to adjust when things get thrown at you in the classroom
setting.
With the all the extra classes this week, we have had to come up with different things to
do with the students. We have mixed it up each day this week between playing soccer, ultimate
football, and going to the theater to watch a movie when there is an excessive number of
students. Watching the kids try to play soccer is humorous and fun to watch. Some do not know
how to play at all, some girls will scream if the ball comes close to them, and then some of the
kids will just trip over their own feet. Ultimate football is fun to watch as well, but none of the
students understand that short passes will work in their favor. Instead, they all love to just chuck
it down the gym and hope their teammate will catch it. The problem is there are too many people
on the court at a time, so it is too difficult to execute that kind of play. Finally, in the theater, we
have been playing the movie Safety off Disney+. I had never heard of the movie beforehand, but
it is based on a true story about a D1 football athlete named Ray who commits to Clemson
University. Ray is an incredible athlete, but he faces various trials throughout the movie between
saving his brother from foster care and dealing with his mother who is an addict. It was an
emotionally touching and moving movie as it gave some insight to where some of these students

at Oak Hill may experience in their own home life. Overall, it was a different week than
expected, but I enjoyed learning how to adjust and come up with new things on the spot. I look
forward to next week, and I hope we get to start a new unit with the students.
