This week was a bit different from previous weeks of me interning at the Gwinnett

Newton Rockdale Health Department. In a previous journal I spoke about my recent interest in

going to nursing school. I expressed my feelings to my coworkers and together we made it

possible for me to begin shadowing a nurse at one of our clinics. Within the health department

we have an office where the logistics take place, but we also have multiple clinics in various

counties that see patients on a daily basis. At the health clinics we see patients for many different

reasons. Some of these reasons include, wellness checkups, immunizations for various illnesses,

and lab work. I was a bit nervous about this transition but the people that I work with have made

me feel very confident in my abilities. I think that this is a very important part of the work field. I

have learned over time that you have to work with people that are confident in you. Without that,

I don’t think that you can get your work done effectively. I hope in my future workplace, it is

similar to this one.

This week, I had the opportunity to shadow a women's health nurse. Previously I had

expressed my interest in women's health and have been working in the children's and women's

health field at the health department since I began in January. During my time at the clinic this

week I got to follow every move of the nurse practitioner that I was shadowing. She was great

and provided me with a lot of information that I did not know prior to completing the day. I got

to see patients with her, complete lab work, and chart the results. Prior to shadowing her, I was

not aware of the many steps that it takes to actually see a patient in the office and complete the

visit. Overall, this week helped me a lot in bringing things full circle. I had the chance to see

some of the work that I have been doing at the district in person. For example, I got to see some

of the forms that I fill out on a daily basis actually being used by the patient at the clinic. All in
all, I am really glad that I had the chance to shadow a nurse and learn a lot of quality information

that will help me in the future.
