RE: Large Volume Water Users Position on Additional Water Supply Efforts
As representatives of the region’s Large Volume Water Users (“LVWUs”), we are appreciative of
the City of Corpus Christi (“City”) and the Port of Corpus Christi’s (“Port”) continued efforts to
ensure our region has a strong, drought-resistant supply of water to enhance the overall economic
health of our community. In an effort to clear up any confusion, we wanted to provide our position
on efforts around additional water supply:
LVWUs support the development of a drought-proof water source for the region’s water
supply portfolio.
The City has the franchise to supply water for our region and therefore is the responsible
primary water provider.
LVWUs value the diversity of the City’s existing water resources and its incremental
approach to capital investment. The City’s approach will enhance the region’s economic
competitiveness by avoiding premature capital commitments that could require long-term
supply contracts or result in increased water rates for the region.
LVWUs have voluntarily been paying a surcharge to the City in support of the capital
improvements required to provide a drought-proof component for the City’s supply
portfolio.
LVWUs recognize the Port’s efforts toward the permitting of an alternative desalination
site in the event the City chooses that site over others for the City’s desalination plans.
LVWUs look forward to further timely updates regarding the progress of all permitting
efforts.
