& Water

www.gwenvironmentalconsulting.com info@gwenvironmentalconsulting.com
Our Vision
 We provide cost effective, innovative, industry proven solutions to reduce or eradicate
the risk and impact of hydrocarbon contamination wherever it may occur.

 We never limit ourselves to what we know today but look to resolve issues and
problems that will become apparent in the future as the use and application of
hydrocarbon based products continues to evolve.

 We work with all businesses no matter what size to help provide best-practice advice,
product delivery, training and support to mitigate contamination at source without
posing a threat to the environment.

 Our concern is the environment. Our passion is helping you protect it for the future
Science & Nature Combined

 Our product range is designed to be simple and safe to use

 They can be used to treat new and historical land contamination

 Our products were born out of a commitment to meet the most stringent
environmental standards for Legislation in the Maritime world.

 The products meet MARPOL standards for use in a marine environment

(International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships)

Bioremediation is the process of

using naturally occurring bacteria
to digest and literally “eat” the
harmful contaminants found in
fuels, oils and other hydrocarbon
Land Remediation
 In situ shallow level bioremediation (up to 1.5 metres deep) can be completed non
intrusively with the minimum of labour and equipment cost.

 Implementation typically takes one day for sites up to 1000m³ and we aim to reach
remediation target levels within 90 to 120 days.

 Dry Powder Products can be used to stiffen and stabilise contaminated sludges, the presence
of water will release oxygen from the powder, helping the biodegradation process.

 Liquid Products can be used either as a standalone solution for small scale spills, such as
equipment leaks, or as part of an integrated approach in larger, more heavily contaminated
projects. The solubalisers in the product help it unadhere contaminants from the soil,
providing for better contact of the bacteria with the contaminant, which results in more
timely and efficient bioremediation.

 Enhancers can be used for heavily contaminated soil projects. This product contains a high
count aerobic and facultative bacteria. It is used as a heavy dosing treatment and can bring
even the most heavily contaminated sites within permissible levels in 90 to 120 days.
Application Methods
For deep contamination small boring rigs will allow products
to be applied under pressure into the ground without the
need to excavate.

Here soil and groundwater can be treated as part of the

same process.

Very old and deep contamination will be drawn up and

treated once the plume has been detected.

Shallow contamination can be treated with over spraying or

application of bio remedial powder which can be tilled into
the surface of the land using common agricultural tools and
equipment.
Application Methods – Case Study
Wellow Cottage St Hellier

The products can also be applied and allowed to seep

under buildings and infrastructure such as roads and
railways without the need to demolish them or disrupt
the important services they provide

Wellow Cottage St Hellier, Jersey had suffered a

significant heating oil spill which had permeated under
the cottage.

By allow the bio remedial solution to gradually seep

under cottage and its foundations the spill was
successfully remediated.
Application Methods – Case Study
Montgomery School Exeter

In sensitive areas the soil can be treated without disturbing

the surface of the soil.

An example of this can be shown where contamination

was treated below a school playing field without having to
destroy the turf.

The new school is intended to be a Carbon Neutral in-use

facility.

One area of the current field contained elevated levels of

the hydrocarbon compound Benzo(a)pyrene (BaP).

The area was successfully remediated using bio remedial

product administered through slotted tubing to a depth of
2.4m
Case Study BP Bitumen Plant UK

BP LLandarcy was first ever oil refinery in the UK. It opened in

1922, closed in 1998 and decommissioned in 2008, it covered
over 400 hectares

At its peak it was refining 8,000,000 tonnes of crude oil per

year

A large landfill area was created to capture oil in case the

refinery was bombed in WWII over time this was used as a
dumping ground for contaminated waste

The site created severe pollution at the nearby Crymlyn Bog

designated a Site Of Special Scientific Interest

When the decommissioning began here was free flowing

hydrocarbon down to a depth of over 2m over the site
Case Study BP Bitumen Plant UK
Cleaning of the tank bottom sludges found in the landfill pit were undertaken through
application of bio remedial powder and liquids

The near by site of special scientific interest was inhabited by rare Crested newts so an
environmentally safe procedure was critical to the overall remediation plan

The test results proved that the bio remedial applications were highly successful in
remediating hydrocarbons

The results are shown on the following slide – remediation continued in time after the results
were taken

Safety

The bio remedial products and bacteria are cultured and

manufactured to ISO 9001, ISO 9002 and ISO 14001
specification and standards, and are:

non-chemical based
PH neutral
non-toxic
non-hazardous
non-caustic
non-corrosive
safe to use
readily biodegradable
made from 100% naturally occurring and renewable sources
Summary
 Bio remedial solutions for the treatment of contamination is the next step in helping to
clean up the legacy created by hydrocarbon processing

 They offer life cycle cost savings over and above traditional mechanical and chemical
cleaning processes

 The use of bio remedial solutions means additional harmful chemical cleaning
compounds are not released into the environment

 Bio remedial solutions use nature to help nature
