1.1A Concept and Applications of Directed Numbers

To identify two magnitudes in different directions, we can set:


(i) one magnitude as positive and represent it by the ‘+’ sign, and
(ii) the other magnitude as negative and represent it by the ‘−’ sign.
e.g. If ‘+2 m’ represents 2 m above sea level, then ‘−2 m’ represents 2 m below sea level.

(a) Directed numbers include:


(i) positive numbers―numbers with the ‘+’ sign 0 is neither positive nor
negative. It is not a directed
(ii) negative numbers―numbers with the ‘−’ sign  number.
(b) Two numbers with the same numerical value but
different signs are called opposite numbers.  All natural numbers 1, 2,
3 …, their opposite
e.g. The opposite number of −6 is +6.
numbers −1, −2, −3 …
and 0 are called integers.
