ABSTRACT

Purpose

The researchers conducted this study to find out the effects of overuse of

videoke as well as if there is really a significant difference between the effect

of

using videoke on the older and younger generation.

Design/Methodology

This study utilized survey and quantitative research in gathering

information

through questionnaire checklist and internet browsing. This research also used

causal comparative and correlational research since this research investigated the

significant difference between the use of videoke in day and at night.

Findings

The study revealed that the effects of over using videoke are struggles are

putting babies to sleep in day and sleeping disturbance at night. Based on the

result, both older and younger generation said that the effect of overusing videoke

are struggles in sleeping baby and sleeping disturbance. There is a difference in

the usage of videoke in day and night

Limitation/Implications

The result of this study implies that teenagers are the one who are usually

involved in quarrels when it comes to the overusing of videoke. The result implies

that the effect of using videoke on teenager has the same effect on the parents.

The result implies that the effect of videoke at night is more irritating rather
than in

day or vice versa. This also implies that parents are spend more time in using

videoke at night.
Originality/Value

The findings of this study will be useful because the findings and

recommendation of the study will benefit the respondents which are the citizen of

Brgy. San Roque since this research provides local input policy wherein there will

be a limitation in using videoke in day and at night.

Background of the Study

There is nothing more fun singing and listening to your favorite karaoke

songs along with your friends. This is one of an enjoyable experience but

sometimes over using videoke affect one’s neighbor. This research study the

effects of over using videoke as well as the ways to prevent this issue.

Under House Bill No. 1035 or Anti Videoke Bill is an act prohibiting the use

of videoke/karaoke systems and other sound amplifying equipment that cause

unnecessary disturbance to the public within the residential area, and providing

penalties therefor. Individuals or groups would only allowed to use or operate such

equipment from 8:00 am to 10:00 pm.

Since the aims of this law which is to prevent unnecessary disturbance to

residential areas, as well as to stop the negative social and health effects of
such

activities, is some with the aims of the researchers, this law has a connection in

this research.

There are some instances seen that using videoke results in quarrels and

worst in crime just like the two groups of boys in Brgy. Balon Bato in San Juan
fight

because of the rivalries in videoke. Another one is the fight of two families
results

in reciprocal and slaughter that happen in Tayuman, Manila on January 18, 2019

In connection to the study the said situations are the scenarious seen in a

certain area which can be the prospect location in conducting the study.

The output of the study is a policy which stated the prohibition of videoke

use at 10:00pm onwards, the minimization of videoke sound and the morning

session use of videoke.

Review of Related Literature

Karaoke is a very easy way to practice listening and pronunciation. Karaoke

can be really motivating for some students and as we all know, song is a great way

to improve EFL student’s pronunciation. (Lizana, 2009)

Quezon 4th District Representative Angelina Tan filed House Bill Number

1035 which seeks for a nationwide ban on the playing or operating of any karaoke

system, loudspeaker and other sound amplifying equipment after 10pm in

residential areas. Tan said that karaoke system are one of the major sources of

noise pollution in residential areas. Tan said that the making or creation of

excessive, unnecessary or unusually loud sounds from videoke/karaoke systems

or other amplified audio devices beyond limits and at unacceptable levels during

unholy hours causes serious discomfort and has created numerous complaints and

public condemnation as they are detrimental to public health, comfort,

convenience, safety, welfare and prosperity of the general public. (Cepeda, 2016)

The Lady Solon said that the excessive noise of karaoke cause stress and

inconvenience in sleeping and relaxation of a lot of people. (Umali, 2016)

Prolonged exposure to overly loud noise or brief exposure to an extremely

loud noise may damage the inner ear, resulting in hearing loss. Noise induced

hearing loss can affect people at any age. (Aspinall, 2017)

Noisy videoke, karaoke are banned in Trece Martires, Cavite. The provincial

law provides that any user of the videoke system must secure a permit from their

respective barangays at least two days before their scheduled activity and reminds

the user that corresponding penalties shall apply for violators of the ordinance,

(PNA, 2017)
The House of Representatives on Tuesday started tackling the bill that

seeks to limit the operating hours of videoke machines and other sound amplifying

equipment between 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. House bill No. 1035, filed by Quezon Re

Angelina Tan, proposes a 1,000 fine or six months imprisonment for those who use

videoke machines past 10 p.m. (Arcangel, 2018)

Tan stressed the need for national legislation on the issue, saying it “has
not

only caused quarrels and divisions among our neighborhoods but also death to

some individuals”. (Roxas, 2018)

“The act of singing (as opposed to just listening to music) can naturally
boost

our mood because of releasing endorphins, the “feel good” chemicals in our body.

Besides improving our mood, singing karaoke offers many physical, emotional,

social, and educational benefits”. (Schwartz, 2018)

Statement of the Problem

The researchers wants to know the effects of overuse videoke, following

questions will be answered by this research:

1. What is the respondents profile in terms of:

1.1 Age

1.2 Location

2. What are the effects of overusing of videoke?

3. Is there a significant difference between the effect of using videoke on the

older

generation and the younger generation?

4. Is there are significant difference between the usage of videoke in day and at

night?

Null Hypothesis

There is no significant difference between the usage of videoke in day and

at night between older generation and younger generation.

Conceptual Framework

The researchers listed respondents profile under the input. The researchers

think that knowing the respondents profile such as age and location is the first
thing

to do to be able to have an initial idea on the research topic which is effects of

videoke overuse. Through the use of Questionnaires, the researchers knew the

things under the respondent’s profile.

As the process, the researchers collected data through questionnaire

checklist using the 30 teenagers and 30 parents. In addition, through internet

browsing, the researchers gathered data more information about the data needed.

In the output, the researchers crafted a local policy or recommendation in

Brgy. San Roque about using videoke.

Lastly, the researchers expected a good feedback from the residents of

Brgy. San Roque. Lastly, the researchers wanted the residents to share opinions

about the local policy.

FEEDBACK

Figure 1:
I. P. O Model on Effect of Videoke Overuse By the Citizen of
Brgy, San Roque.
Scope and Limitation

The research focused on what are the effects and how does overused of

videoke affects the lifemanship of the residents of Brgy. San Roque. The

researchers also focused on how to cope up the overused of videoke.

The researchers conducted a survey in Brgy. San Roque using

questionnaire checklist.

Only 60 residents of Brgy. San Roque chose to answer the survey within

month of January 2019 right after research colloquium. It takes 1-2 weeks for the

researchers to conduct the study.

The researchers conducted the study to know the effects of overuse videoke

on the citizen of Brgy. San Roque. The researcher wanted to know if there is a

significant difference between the effect of using videoke on the elder generation

and the younger generation.

Lastly as a researcher also investigated if using a videoke will affect the

life

of every individual people in the Brgy. San Roque if there is a significant

difference

between the usage of videoke in a day and at night. Also If there is are
significant

correlation between the duration of videoke used to the possible effect of

overusing

videoke.
Benefits and Beneficiaries
The information that the researchers will gather can help to prevent the

unnecessary disturbance of overused of videoke to the public. The residents of

Brgy. San Roque are the people who will most benefits in this research. The public

servants like the Brgy. Tanods will surely benefit from this research since they
are

the one assigned in implementing the law and assuring the security of the people.
Definition of Terms
The following terms are deemed important in understanding the present

study:

Day. This refers to a period of 24 hours beginning at midnight

Disturbance. Sounds of karaoke that stops you from working, sleeping, etc.

Duration. This refers to the length of time that something exists or lasts

Karaoke. This refers to a form of entertainment in which a device plays a music of

popular songs and people sing the words to the songs they choose

Night. It is the time of darkness between one day and the next

Overuse. This refers to too much of too great of using something

Parents. This refers to a couple who are the head of the family which is the
subject

of the research in answering the interview

Policy. This refers in writing whereby a contract of insurance is made

Residents. These are people living in a particular place usually for a long period

of time which are the subject of the study

Teenagers. This refers to people who are between 13 and 19 years old which are

the subject in questionnaire checklist

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY
A. Data Collection Procedure

The researchers gathered data from the internet and from the respondent

to gather the appropriate data needed for the research. The researchers created a

questionnaire checklist to be given to the residents of Brgy. San Roque to answer

the necessary questions.

B. Research Design

Descriptive/Survey research is a study of status and is widely used in

education, nutrition, epidemiology, and the behavioural sciences. It’s value is

based on the premise that problems can be solved and practices improved through

observation, analysis and description (Owen, 2000).

Correlational studies are type of research often used in psychology as a

preliminary way to gather information about a topic or in situations qhere

performing an experiment is not possible. This involves looking at relationships

between two or more variables (Cherry, 2018).

Since the researchers gathered data through questionnaire checklist,

qualitative and descriptive method is acceptable.

Causal comparative and correlational research are also acceptable since

this research investigated if there is significant difference between the use of

videoke in day and night as well as if there are significant relationship between
the

duration of videoke used to the possible effect overusing videoke.

C. Subject of the Study

The sample size used is 60 respondents that lives in Brgy. San Roque. The

respondents for questionnaire checklist are 30 teenagers and another 30 parents

to avoid bias.

D. Sources of Data and Instrument

The primary data that this research need was collected from the residents

of Brgy. San Roque who are the respondents. The data is directly gathered through

questionnaire checklist that includes the hours that residents spend in using

videoke and the effect of overusing this equipment in day and at night.

E. Sampling Procedure

A purposive sampling is a non-probability sample that is selected based on

characteristics of a population and the objective of the study. Purposive sampling

is also known as judgmental, selective, or subjective sampling (Crossman, 2017).

Since the subject of the study that the researchers chose was specific and

have a particular characteristics that this research needed, purposive sampling

was also used.

Saiful (2015) a clinical researcher states that a sample size longer than 30

and less than 500 are appropriate for most research so that the researchers chose

only 30 respondents for the questionnaire checklist as well as for the interview.
Results and Discussion

Table 1.1 shows the frequency of the age of the respondents in which ages

range from 16 to 18 years old got the highest number which is 16 among the

teenager respondents. In terms of the parents, age ranging 46 years old and above

got the highest number of respondents which is 13.

The result only means that teenagers are more fond of using videoke than

parents do.
This implies that teenagers are the one who are usually involved in quarrels

when it comes to the overusing of videoke. The result also implies that the

teenager’s enemy can be a teenager too or parents.

The result is somewhat parallel on what Tan said that overusing videoke

has not only caused quarrels and divisions among our neighborhoods but also

death to some individuals. (Roxas, 2018)

Table 1.2 shows that there are 10 teenagers who used videoke in Golden.

This location is in the rank 1, while there are only 1 teenager who used videoke in

Crestview as well as in Galang. On the other hand, there are 7 parents who used

videoke in Kaila and only 1 parent in Don Enrique, Ahon, Crusher and Crestview.

The result only means that Golden has more residents who used videoke

rather than other places in Brgy. San Roque. It also means that Crestview, Halang

and Ligtasan are the places who have low number of residents who used videoke.

This implies that the researchers have gotten respondents most in the

Golden, Crestview and Galang in which the respondents has a videoke and does

use it.

The result is somewhat parallel on what PNA said that noisy videoke,

karaoke banned in Trece Martires, Cavite. The provincial law requires any user of

the videoke system to secure a permit from their respective barangays at least two

days before their scheduled activity (PNA, 2017).

Table 2 shows that for teenagers, the most effect in overusing videoke in

day is, it creates noise pollution while at night, it causes stress. On the other
hand,

for parents, the most effect in overusing videoke during the day is struggles in

putting babies to sleep while creating sleeping disturbance at night. Overall, the

most effects of overusing videoke during the day is struggles in sleeping baby
while

at night, the most effect is sleeping disturbance.

The result only means that the effects of over using videoke depends on the

time that the residents used it.

This implies that each of the resident should limit the used of videoke. The

residents of a certain place should give a limited time in using this kind of

equipment to avoid some bad effects.

The result is somewhat parallel on what Tan said that individuals and

business establishments should use sound-producing devices from 8 am to pm to

reduce noise pollution in the country. (Cepeda, 2016)

Table 3 shows that the mean of teenagers is 7.5 as well as the parents.

There is no mean difference between the two variables. The null hypothesis is

accepted with the t-tabulated, 2.447.

The result only means that there is no significant difference on the effect
of

using videoke between older and younger generation.

This implies that the effect of using videoke on teenager has the same effect

on the parents. This also implies that both respondents are affected by the

overusing of videoke especially due to it’s loud sound.

The result is somewhat parallel on what Aspinall said that prolonged

exposure to overly loud noise may damage the inner ear, resulting in hearing loss.

Noise induced hearing loss can affect people of any age. (Aspinall, 2017)

both day and night in which shows that null hypothesis is being rejected.

The result only means that there is significant difference on the usage of

videoke by teenagers in day and at night.

The result implies that the effect of videoke in day is more irritating
rather

than at night or vice versa. This also implies that teenagers spend more time in

using videoke in day wherein this equipment will not cause any advantage to

teenagers.

The result somewhat contradict what Lizana said that karaoke can be really

motivating for some students and as we all know, song is a great way to improve

EFL student’s pronunciation (Lizana, 2009).

Table 4.2 shows that the mean of parents in day is 2.97 while at night, it is

3.27. This table also shows that the T-computed is less than the t-tabulated in
both

day and night in which shows that null hypothesis is being rejected.

The result only means that there is significant difference on the usage of

videoke by parents in day and at night.

The result implies that the effect of videoke at night is more irritating
rather

than in day or vice versa. This also implies that parents are spend more time in

using videoke at night and it has a good effects for them.

The result is parallel on what Schwarts said that the act of singing can

naturally boost their mood because they release endorphins, the “feel good”

chemicals in body. Besides, singing karaoke offers many physical, emotional.

social, and educational benefits (Schwarts, 2018).

Conclusion

From the result of this study, here are the conclusions that the researchers

formed.

1. Age ranging from 16 years old to 18 years old for the younger generation and

age ranging from 46 years old and above for the older generation are the ages

of the respondent which mostly came from Galang, Crestview and Kaila.

2. For teenager, the most effect of overuse of videoke during the day is noise

Pollution while at night is stress level. On the other hand, for parents, the
most

effects of overuse of videoke in day is struggles in putting babies to sleep

while

at night is sleeping disturbance.

3. The teenagers and parents have that similar view on the effects of overused

videoke during the day and even at night.

4. The usage of videoke at day time is different from the usage of videoke at
night.
Recommendation

Here are the recommendations that the researchers laid.

1. There should be a strict policy especially to those younger generation age

ranging from 16 to 18 years old and older generation whose age range

from 46 years old and above that lives in Galang, Crestview and Kaila

when it comes to the overused of videoke at day time and at night.

2. Aside from limiting the use of videoke, resident should also turn down the

volume of videoke during the day as well at night.

3. Each of the residents should limit themselves in using videoke.

4. There should be a limited time for teenagers in using videoke at day time

and for parents at night.
