Test 1
Problem 1 (2 points)
(a) In a sketch of the conventional cubic unit cell of the FCC structure, indicate with circles the
positions of all the lattice points. You do not need to indicate the positions of the atoms.

(b) What is the coordination number for the BCC structure?

(c) Describe in one word the shape of the primitive unit cell of the BCC structure.

(d) Derive the packing factor for the BCC structure.

Problem 2 (3 points)

A single crystal with the BCC crystal structure is subjected to tension in the [001] direction. Please limit
your consideration to slip systems with slip planes in the {110} family and slip directions in the <111>
family, as these are the most favorable slip systems for BCC.

(a) Consider slip on the (101) slip plane, give the Miller indices of a slip direction on this slip plane.

(b) For the slip system that corresponds to the (101) slip plane and your chosen slip direction in (a),
calculate the ratio of the resolved shear stress to the applied tensile stress.
(c) What is the number of slip systems that have the highest value of the resolved shear stress.

(d) Give the Miller indices of a slip plane that give a zero value for the resolved shear stress.

Problem 3 (5 points)
Answer the following questions in relation to the binary Cu-Ag phase diagram shown in Fig. 1. The solid
solution with Cu as the host is α, whereas the solid solution with Ag is β.

(a) What is the maximum solubility (in wt.% Ag) of Ag in α? At what temperature (in °C) does this
maximum solubility occur?
(b) What is the solubility limit (in wt.% Cu) of Cu in L at 900°C? If this solubility limit is just
exceeded, what phase comes out and what is the composition (in wt.% Ag) of the phase that
comes out?

(c) What is the solubility limit (in wt.% Cu) of Cu in β at 700°C? If this solubility limit is just
exceeded, what phase comes out and what is the composition (in wt.% Ag) of the phase that
comes out?

1
(d) What is the solubility limit (in wt.% Ag) of Ag in α at 900°C? If this solubility limit is just
exceeded, what phase comes out and what is the composition (in wt.% Ag) of the phase that
comes out?

(e) What is the overall composition (in wt.% Ag) that gives the lowest temperature (in °C) for
complete melting?

(f) What is the composition (in wt.% Ag) of each of the three phases that coexist at equilibrium at the
eutectic temperature for an alloy having the eutectic composition? Specify the phase associated
with each phase composition.

(g) In a rough sketch of Fig. 1, indicate the entirety of the three-phase field in this phase diagram.
You may want to describe this field in words also in order to make it clear.

(h) Sketch the cooling curve from 1000°C to 600°C for an alloy containing 60 wt.% Ag. Indicate the
phase transformation temperatures on the curve.
(i) For an alloy containing 60 wt.% Ag, what is the proportion by mass of α at equilibrium at a
temperature infinitesimally above the eutectic temperature? Sketch the microstructure of this
material and label the phases in the sketch.

(j) For an alloy containing 60 wt.% Ag, what is the proportion by mass of α at equilibrium at a
temperature infinitesimally below the eutectic temperature?

2
(k) For an alloy containing 60 wt.% Ag, what is the proportion by mass of proeutectic α (i.e., primary
α) at equilibrium at a temperature infinitesimally below the eutectic temperature?

(l) (4%) For an alloy containing 60 wt.% Ag at equilibrium at 600°C, what are the microconstituents?

(m)For an alloy containing 60 wt.% Ag at equilibrium at 600°C, what is the proportion by mass of
eutectic solid?

(n) For an alloy containing 60 wt.% Ag at equilibrium at 600°C, what is the composition of each of
the phases?

(o) For an alloy containing 60 wt.% Ag at equilibrium at 600°C, sketch the microstructure and label
the phases in the sketch.

(p) For an alloy containing 60 wt.% Ag, what is the composition in at.% Ag?

(q) For an alloy containing 5 wt.% Ag, what is the liquidus temperature (in °C)?

(r) For an alloy containing 5 wt.% Ag at equilibrium at 500°C, what is the proportion by mass of β?
Sketch the microstructure of this alloy and label the phases in the sketch.

(s) For an alloy containing 95 wt.% Ag, what is the solidus temperature (in °C)?
