 Formulation of unique combination of herbal extracts as an ointment to treat rheumatic and


osteo arthritis (Patent pending: App No. 20257) and safety and efficacy studies of the
formulation using Wistar rats in collaboration with the University of Sri Jayawardenapura
 Analysis of antioxidant activity of the endemic plant Osbekia octandra, determination of the
chemical compound responsible for its hepato-protective activity and formulating a unique
combination of herbal extracts to treat hepatic disorders (Patent pending: App No. 19855)
 Extraction and purification of curcumin from Ceylon turmeric rhizomes to develop an
intravenous formulation for the treatment of hepatic disorders and cancers
 Cultivation of the algae Arthrospira platensis (Spirulina) to produce protein supplement
powder, extraction and stability studies of c-phycocyanin to be used as a food colourant and
developing an economical animal feed supplement using spirulina residue and black soldier
fly larvae

 Identification of an optimum medium for the growth of the algae Haematococus pluvialis for
extraction of astaxanthin to be used as a food colourant
 Optimization of a procedure for extraction of bixin from Annatto seeds to be used as a food

Duties:

 Chemical and biological analysis and optimization studies for the anaerobic digestion unit of
the first largest waste to energy plant in Sri Lanka
 Survey and data analysis for implementation of the first geospatial data analysis project to
help improve the agricultural advancement in Sri Lanka
 In-charge of coordinating administrative tasks with the government of Sri Lanka and
industrial sector

Research:

 Chemical and biochemical analysis and optimization of the anaerobic digestion unit of the
first largest waste to energy plant in Sri Lanka which included following studies;
1. Chemical analysis of municipal organic solid waste in Sri Lanka to be used in the
anaerobic digestion unit (capacity 140 MT/day) of the waste to energy plant
2. Analysis of methane production potential of municipal organic solid waste
3. Pilot scale study of bio-gas production from municipal organic solid waste through
anaerobic digestion of organic matter
4. Identification of suitable microorganisms for production of liquid bio-fertilizer from the
digestate remaining after anaerobic digestion
5. Comparative studies of using bio-fertilizer over chemical fertilizer in agriculture

 Internship at Ceylon Cold Stores PLC, under the Departments of Quality Assurance
and Research and Development ((November 2014 to April 2015)

Duties:

 Developing new ice cream flavours (one of the three products which have been developed, is
now in the market as Elephant House Watalappan Ice Cream)
Research:

 Laboratory scale and pilot scale studies on extraction of natural colours (anthocyanin and
chlorophylls) and their applications on food and beverage products which included following
areas;
1. Identification of suitable solvents/solvent systems to extract natural colours from
natural sources

3. Stability studies of natural colours in developed ice cream and soft drinks
