Essential Question: How can we control invasive species?

Three Points to Prove: #1: Invasive species cause problems for native ones.
#2: Feral pigs cannot be fully removed from Hawaii.
#3: Invasive species lack predators in Hawaii.

Point that this Source Proves: # 1: Invasive species cause problems for native ones

Excerpts (These should provide insight into the Point to Prove):

Early in the video, the narrator mentions invasive species are “harmful not because of what they are, but where they
happen to be.”

Klos states that “with sunny fields, a mild climate, and no natural predators in its new home, the vine grew
uncontrollably.”

Invasive species cause many problems because: “Most of the world’s ecosystems are a result of millennia of co-
evolution by organisms.”

Analysis (How does this source support the Point to Prove?):

This video was an especially useful resource for my research project. Specifically, to prove the point that
invasive species cause problems for native ones. While this TED talk did not go over Hawaii’s invasive
species, the themes discussed were universal. In fact, it is good to see how invasive species have affected
other places around the world.
As the first quote mentions, invasive species are not harmful because of what they are, but where they
happen to be. This applies to Hawaii as there are no large predators to control our invasive species. For
example, axis deer evolved in India. There, they are predated on by tigers, leopards, wolves, bears, Asiatic
lions, and striped hyenas. However, there are not any large terrestrial predators in Hawaii. Hawaii is a
paradise for these animals which would normally have to worry about predators. As such, the deer can
reproduce rapidly, eating up all the grass. This is very much like the case mentioned in the video with rabbits
in Australia.
If Hawaii’s birds had co-evolved with mammals, the invasive species may not have been such a problem.
However, since terrestrial mammals were only introduced about 200 years ago, Hawaii’s birds have no
adaptations to mitigate the damage that the invasive species do. Many of our native birds build nests on the
ground, which may have been a good strategy when there were no predators. Now, there are mongoose that
will eat the eggs of those birds (or anything they can fit in their mouth for that matter).
