Letter from the Executive Board

Dear Journalists,

The Executive Board of the International Press Corps at Hiranandani Upscale School Model

United Nations 2022 welcomes you! We are the chairs of IPC: Tanisha Balamurugan as

Chair and Ishita Dixit as Vice Chair. We look forward to working with you all during the

conference and to seeing delegates display their writing and journalistic merit.

The International Press Corps differs from traditional committees in the way that the skill of

writing is favored over speech. Delegate articles and reports have a significant standing in the

course of other committees and can turn a delegate’s debate for the better or the worse, all of

which is conveyed through the lens of the media. Delegates of IPC will act as third party to

committees and report on the committee's efficiency and progress. This committee will focus

on conveying real world experiences as part of the press in conferences.

To prepare for the committee, research on your news agency’s style of writing and media bias

and work on effectively communicating this throughout the conference. We genuinely hope

that this will be a fruitful experience for you all and that every one of you gains something

new, be it increased confidence, better research or writing skills, improved public speaking

and much more.

SECTION A: Components of the Press

Article

On the first day of the conference, you will be in charge of conveying committee proceedings

to the public. This will be in the form of an article that should include a detailed evaluation of

proceedings of the committee. Delegates are expected to write 2 reports; an article, minimum

of 200 words (maximum of 500 words) and a report based on their creative preference (video,

comic, illustrations or memes) on any topic/issue or the proceedings in their respective

committees. To be prepared for the committee, ensure to include the style and biases of your

assigned news agency, this should be recounted in your article.

The article should include the following:

• Where and When the topic/issue highlighted took place.

• What are the leading reasons that caused the event?

• Expected repercussions of the issue.

• Were there any political tensions between the countries previously before the event

occurred?

• Is there a third party involved in the event?

Once delegates have gathered their source of information, they can begin structuring the

article. The format of the article follows a general format. Delegates are advised to follow the

format shown in the triangle as it helps prioritize which information is relevant and important

and how much it should be talked about.

As for the writing style, remember to write in an active voice instead of a passive voice. Writing

in an active voice is advised simply because it has a more direct connection between the subject

and the verb. Additionally, although maintaining neutrality in your writing is imperative, we

would advise that you reflect the media bias of your allotted news agency as well.

Avoid making your article too complicated or boring. Use the 12 AM rule, assume that all your

readers are reading your work at midnight after a long day, trying not to fall asleep. You should

introduce interesting points while also maintaining credibility.

Lastly, have fun with your writing! Select topics that you find interesting, you should enjoy the

process rather than feeling forced about it. Try adding a touch of your personality to your work

to make the writing more enjoyable.

Press Conference

The press conference is where delegates of IPC will enter different committees and question

the delegates about the ongoing motion or anything that they may find interesting during

committee proceedings. As reporters, members of IPC will be expected to reflect the interests

of your news agency. Delegates will be required to question members of their respective

committee. These questions may include simple facts about their nation and/or their stance on

the motion, details on the questions that may be asked will be specified below.

Delegates have the freedom to question other committee members on prevalent topics, this

may include burning questions that may criticize the delegate surrounding their stance or

change in opinion over the course of the conference or simply clarify a delegate’s statement

that may not comply with their international laws, foreign policy, or the focus of the debate.

IPC delegates must be mindful of their language when addressing other delegates but still

maintain the tension during the press conference with their questions!

Interviews and Observations

As members of IPC, you are required to act as a third party to any discussion ongoing in

committee, therefore silence and prudence of members is appreciated. This may help

delegates to establish an effective presence and completely comprehend the proceedings of

the committee.

In interviews, the main proceedings of the committee take the highest ranking in terms of

importance, ensure to make a note of comments or statements that change the course of the

debate in mind and ask delegates after. Keep questions short and simple to gain extra clarity

into what the delegate thinks of your question so that your report will be concise. Maintain

the credibility of the news agency to the point that their style is completely reflected in your

line of questioning.

That is all you need to know for now!
