Celebrates Five Years
Forward

At the stroke of midnight on January 1, 2011, Greenville Forward was officially celebrating its fifth year of
existence. Throughout the year, we have taken moments to remember why Vision 2025 is important to our
community and why the work we are doing must endure.

For Greenville Forward, five years means almost 1,800 days spent working to make Greenville better. It
means five years of strong support from a community that believes in the goals of Vision 2025, and 260
weeks of task forces leading projects to bridge resources, programs inspiring leaders and initiating growth,
and partnerships forged across municipal lines.

Press play to listen to Executive Director Russell Stall talk about milestone moments from the past five years
and what keeps Greenville Forward moving forward.

Greenville Forward was created in January 2006 to help Greenville achieve Vision 2025, the bold, comprehensive, and
aggressive plan to create a vibrant Greenville in the next twenty-five years. By having a group like Greenville Forward,
whose sole purpose is to facilitate, coordinate, and communicate the ideas from Vision 2025, the aggressive goals for
Vision 2025 will be kept vibrant, alive, and attainable.

Greenville
is a Gem,
a cherished small city wrapped inside an ever growing county. We may
take for granted our welcoming, kind and considerate culture until
we get the chance to read what the Royal Highland Fusiliers
have to say about us.

WO2 Jason Craig put together a group of 8 Royal

Highland Fusiliers to come here and serve as
the Honor Guard for the Greenville
Scottish Games. Read through some of
their quotes about our community:

“You all made my first taste of America

outstanding and left me longing to return.”
- Cpl Gen Mullen.

“I think I speak for us all when I say we had an amazing time and
the people of Greenville couldn’t have done enough to make us feel
welcome.” - LCpl Jason McGowan.

“It was great to see how much the people of Greenville want to keep the
Scottish heritage alive.” - Fusilier Liam Kemp.

“We were pleasantly surprised to be met with a piper and also with the reception
we received at the airport.” - Fusilier David Walker.

“This was one of the best experiences of my life and I thank you all very much.”
- Fusilier Derek Ferguson.

“I would like to say thanks for inviting us to Greenville. It was my first

time in the states and I will definitely be back for a holiday.”
- LCpl Dean McMillan.

“I would just like to say thank you to the St Andrews Society of

Greenville for their generosity and hospitality shown to the soldiers
of the Royal Highland Fusiliers. We have been made to feel very
welcome and the trip was a dream come true.” - Sgt Steven Boyd.

May was another wonderful month with a packed speaking

working for an ad agency making a decent entry-level salary by
Mexican standards.

Today he has a full slate of clients who enable him to earn over
three times what he was earning when I was with him just eight months ago. Now he’s pondering how to add extra
manpower so he can say “yes” to more clients.

Victor told me, “Opportunity IS all around. You just have to have the eyes to see it. Sometimes you might
just need someone to help you see it.” No doubt there is more opportunity in Greenville than
we’re seeing at the moment.

In Wales I met Allan Beaton. Allan is a British businessman in Cardiff who’s also a Carolina

When he saw Wales ranked at the bottom of the heap when it came to Internet use, he
determined he would do something to change that.

He created the What’s Next Conference, which just happened to be the very first
digital marketing conference of it’s kind in the country. As a solopreneur he

Twittering My Way

The winter of 2009 found me living on my 36’

dock at a local marina while sporting a killer tan
and waist length dreadlocks, I was the
quintessential boat bum. While acquaintances had
been made in every port, I only stayed in touch

The question Twitter asked at that time was, “What

Sit-n-Spin The Truest Meaning of Success
By Matt Morgan, Sit-n-Spin Recording Studios

Being a musician all my life I’ve got a lot of stories. I’ve been playing bars since I was 14 years old. We had
to have chaperons just to even allow us to play. I have toured the country, played festivals and shows with
Grammy winners, recorded all over the world, opened my own commercial studio and have run that for
years now, but I still almost daily wonder the meaning of success in this business.

I can’t tell you how many times I get asked the question “what do you do” and I say, I’m a musician. The
standard reply to that is well, what do you do for money, or what’s your real job? By any means, I’m not
wealthy, but have sustained my lifestyle for many years now solely playing, and recording music. It’s my
passion, and I feel very luck that I can do this for a living.

That being said, let’s get back to the success part. I have seen artists come and go in my studio. Some have
had record deals, and others, perusing music simply for fun. I see all styles and genres, all walks of life. The
underlining dream of well over half of these people is not to record the best album possible, or to play the
best show of their lives; it’s to simply get rich and famous. When you look at the odds of achieving super
stardom, I mean where people recognize you walking down the street because you’re on every cover of
every magazine in the known universe, the odds of that are literally the same as Ed McMahon showing up
with a check at your door.

The epitome of this is a client I had a few

weeks back. He had been lured into a music
conference (for lack of a better term SCAM)
that told him that for X amount of dollars; he
can get his songs heard by an expert panel of
music executives. Of course he paid the
money! These were the reps from major
labels, which did run the careers of some very
well-known acts. They also told him to rent
out a local studio, so they could see how he
worked in the studio (also for an additional
fee). So far, they have him pay admittance to
the conference, additional fees for VIP access,
and other fees to get a personal meeting at
my studio with executives of labels, (not to
mention my studio rate on top of all this).

So the client, his father, and his wife, walk into

my studio, introduce themselves, and share
their nervousness and excitement. They told
me that the heads of these labels were
coming in the studio to sign him to a major
record deal. With almost tears of excitement,
22
he turned to me and said “this could be the first day of the rest of my
life”. So I was 100% rooting for this guy! He seemed like a genuine
person, and wanted a better life for his family. The record executive came
in, gave it a slight listen, pretended to be interested, and then gave him
the speech that should have been read before the “music conference”.

In a nutshell, he said major labels are dead, indie or smaller labels don’t
spend money on new artist, and labels now expect the artist to do the work themselves, meaning record
their own records, promote themselves online, build a following, market themselves as a brand, and prove
that they are a viable product, and then a label might step in. What a load of crap! This guy has the nerve
to charge money to this starving artist, to tell him he needs to get himself out there by creating a Facebook
page. I have seen a lot in my studio, but this beats it all. I think that should be a criminal offence like
stealing. The record executive left and we were left with a very uncomfortable moment. The wife in tears at
this point, started telling me they might lose their house, and this was their only hope of getting out of the
situation they were in, the father was trying to calm her, and the artist looked as if he were kicked in the
chest. I felt horrible because I was about to charge them again for my studio!

I learned that success comes in many forms, and you can obtain it many different ways, but at the end of
the day, you are going to have to be ok with who you are, how you got there, and why.

Something More Than a Game is a story about a father, his daughters and a box full of evidence that may
or may not prove or disprove, once and for all, the guilt, innocence or unwitting participation of Greenville
native “Shoeless Joe” Jackson in the 1919 World Series baseball scandal that created the Chicago “Black Sox.”

“It’s a play that asks what the difference is between nostalgia and memory, legend and fact. It’s a play
that asks us if we really want to know the truth about anything and why. Ultimately it’s a play about that
intersection where the dreams of our potential collide with the reality of our short-comings,” says Tromsness.

Baseball, the quintessential American sport, and the guilt or innocence of Joe Jackson which is still fiercely
debated amongst baseball fans nearly a century later, combine to provide a perfect medium for Tromsness
to tell a deeper, more human story that should delight theatre goers, especially those hoping for something
that goes beyond “a show about baseball.”

Asked what message he hopes theatregoers will take from the show, Tromsness says, “The message is a
question: When the legend outweighs the facts do we print the legend? And when the facts threaten to
outweigh the legend do we bury the facts?”

Director Chip Egan has selected a stellar cast to bring Tromsness’ Something More Than a Game to life:
including Michael Hart as Shoeless Joe Jackson, Maegan McNerney Azar as Katie Jackson /Boston
Zimmerman, Anne Tromsness as Philadelphia Zimmerman, Rick Connor as Hartley Repogle/Roy Emmett
and Ron Joseph as Judge Landis/Howard Zimmerman.

Thank you, Russell Tripp for the video work.

A DOSE OF
F iction
April Showers
By Tim O’Neill

The forecast called for a high of 73 degrees with a breeze blowing in from the northwest at about
12mph. Those were the exact conditions for the past three days, which was pretty typical for
April. There was really no reason to doubt it. These were the conditions that one could expect if
one were going to be downtown on Saturday afternoon. If one was going on a lunch date with the
charming and beautiful Christine Hannigan. If one was going on his FIRST date with the lovely
Miss Hannigan. If one was named Greg. These would be the conditions one could expect.

As it happened, Greg Fields met all those criteria. And armed with the certainty of the forecasted
weather conditions, he selected his outfit for the aforementioned date. He didn’t like to use the
term “outfit” for describing a grown man’s clothing selection, but that’s what it was. His white
cotton oxford shirt was the same brand as his khaki cotton chino pants. The argyle pattern on his
sweater vest matched the argyle pattern on his socks. And even his dirty bucks sort of matched
his dirty blond hair. And every piece of clothing – right down to his white cotton t-shirt and boxers
– were ironed to within an inch of their lives. When all was said and done, he looked like an
anal-retentive Good Humor man… from Scotland.

One last check in the mirror confirmed in his mind how good he thought he looked. Poor bastard.

They were to meet at the Starbucks at 1, walk around downtown until 3 and then grab lunch at
an outdoor café to enjoy the spring weather. Greg arrived early, but waited in the car until he
could arrive at 12:47. He figured that was early enough to show he cared, but not so early that
he looked desperate. Everything was perfectly planned.

Greg had first met Christine on the elevator of the building where they both worked. She on 14.
He on 22. She has long, thick dark hair. The kind you want to brush out of eyes and curl behind

32
ears. Her warm brown eyes are nestled comfortably in her porcelain-like face. And her full lips
bent slightly downward at the corners. He loved her immediately. As much as one can love a
woman without really knowing her. After six months of chance encounters and stolen glances, he
finally had the nerve to ask her out when they were talking on the elevator earlier in the week.

“Wow, you look like you got some sun this weekend, huh?” She said.

“Huh? Oh yeah, I guess.” He impressed her with his rapier wit. “I ate at that new outdoor café.”

“Oh yeah, I heard that was good. Is it?” She asked.

“Yeah. Really good. You should go sometime.” He knew this was the moment to ask her out.
But he had nothing prepared. He liked to write out possible scenarios with appropriate responses
before asking anyone out. But the window of opportunity was closing. His heart was racing. And
the elevator was rising.

“You know,” he said a little too loudly. “I was thinking of going again on Saturday. Would you like
to join me?” he had settled down a bit. She thought for a second and looked him up and down
as the elevator rose from 11 to 12. She agreed and they made their plans.

The rest of the week, he planned and he ironed and he checked the weather and he made
reservations. He even walked the route they would take to familiarize himself with every step. And
then the weekend came, but they would never meet on this Saturday. For while Greg was thinking
of the new café and Starbucks that are downtown, Christine was thinking of the new café and
Starbucks that are on the eastside. And even though he offered to drive to where she was, she
thought it was a little chilly for an outdoor café. And they promised to try again next weekend.

The forecast for next Saturday called for rain. Which was pretty typical for April.

Idiot Friends
If you hang around idiots you become one…guaranteed
Featuring Steve Edwards of The Amazing Factor

firmly believe that if you hang

Iaround idiots you will become
one — no exceptions. There are
people in your life who make you
a better person and then there
are ones who strive to bring you
down to their level of misery. The
problem is most of us don’t take
the time to figure out who is who.

I am convinced that for someone

to grow as an individual, they
must associate with people who
have a desire to grow and become
a better person as well. Sounds
obvious, right? It’s not, mainly
because most people never take
the time to stop and figure it out.

Take a minute and write down your top five friends. Now sit back and take a serious look at the list, not a
cursory look, but a serious look. If it helps, write down the positive and negative traits each person has.

Now figure out which friends exhibit the traits that you hope to gain and grow from and which ones don’t?
The friends on the “don’t” list are the people who are usually selfish and find great joy in sharing negative
gossip about others. They will do everything in their power to make you feel that lack of success is
just fine because that’s where they are, soaking in a life of mediocrity. In fact, that’s where most people
are — sitting around complaining about their lack of good fortune and how nothing seems to go their
way, yet doing nothing at all to change their situation. Sound like someone you know? Change it! Remove
the negative influences and seek out new, more positive people.

If you hang around idiots, you become one — guaranteed! Fortunately, the opposite of this is also true.

gathered enough sponsors and attendees to host a spectacular event in the Mecure Holland House hotel
in the heart of Cardiff. The business and institutional community took note of his work and asked to join
him. He now has the support to begin planning similar conferences throughout the United Kingdom. The
next one in Cardiff is scheduled for November 14, 2011.

Both Victor and Allan are independent business owners. Instead of reading the newspapers and listening
to the news reporters tell of economic doom, they looked for and found opportunity to create the future
they wanted anyway. My hunch is, there’s plenty of opportunity for us right here in Greenville. We’re
known as a community that makes things happen. I wonder what’s next for us.

Nemo Me Impune Lacessit
Eight members of The Royal Highland Fusiliers (2nd Battalion of the Royal Regiment of Scotland) came to
Greenville as the guests of the Greenville Scottish Games Board of Directors. They were here to serve as the
special honor guard of the games.

They arrived on a Wednesday afternoon and departed

on a Sunday morning. None of them had ever
visited this area, nor had they traveled to
the United States before. Greenville was
going to be their first experience with
America and a group of extremely
dedicated volunteers from the St.
Andrews Society of Upstate SC was
assembled to look after the Fusiliers
during their brief stay. Don Koonce,
Dean Livingston, Mike Cannon, Brock
Koonce, Brandon Herring, Steve Moore, Appy
Apperson and myself were the lucky ones that
were chosen to assist the Fusiliers.

We took them to a fair number of bars

and restaurants during their down time.
They got to hang out with the 2nd Division
Marine marching band, drive fast at the
BMW Performance Center, go shopping, and
attend a few functions tied into the Wounded
Warrior project and our Scottish games. At
every formal event they were consummate
professional soldiers and perfect
gentlemen. At each informal gathering
they were charming, funny and very
friendly to each and every person they
encountered. Better men could not have
been picked to represent their country
and their military.

These Fusiliers were bombarded with

questions everywhere they went and at every turn they smiled and
regaled us with their stories.

In addition to Fusiliers, we were also able to meet the last Commanding General Scotland - Major General
Mark Strudwick(ret.)and his wife Jan, plus Darren Burgess, Second Secretary Scottish Affairs at The British
Embassy. The General and his wife were delightful, extremely engaging and were fabulously proud of their
Fusiliers. Darren was the one of the most personable, friendly
and gracious people I have met in a long time.

We intended to entertain and support

the honor guard of the games and I
hope we lived up to our responsibilities.
I don’t think any of us were prepared to
be so touched by these gallant soldiers
from Scotland.

These good men of the RHF had just

returned from their tour of duty in
Afghanistan in April. They had all been injured
and they all served their country with great
honor. These soldiers represented the 378 years
of Scottish military heritage and their unit
with grace.

I believe that Scotland is beloved in Greenville

for a whole host of reasons. We now have
eight more.
