Chap 12 Measures of Central

Tendency (2)
Modal Class and Mean
of Grouped data
Frequency table for grouped data
1) Grouped data are data arranged with specific class interval
2) Class interval is the group with specific range
3) The range of each class interval is the same
Range= the largest value – the smallest value

Range=74-70 =4

Range=79-75 =4

Range=84-80 =4

Class interval
A) Modal Class for grouped data
Modal class is the class interval with the highest frequency
Example 1

Highest frequency

Solution:
Modal class = 75-79
Example 2

Highest frequency

Solution:
Modal class = ( 60-64 ) marks
B) Mean for grouped data
Example 1 Calculate the mean and modal class

Exercise 1
Find the modal class and mean

i) Modal Class=70-79
ii) Mean
The most appropriate measure for central of tendencies

No Extreme value Mean

Numerical
data
Has an extreme value Median

Categorical
data Mode

1) Numerical data
- Numerical data are numbers.
- data that is measurable,such as time, height, weight, amount,and so on.
2) Categorical data data
- data that is not measurable, such as eye colour, gender, blood group,
popular items
1) Mode is chosen because it is a categorical data.

2) Median is chosen because it is a numerical data and there is

an extreme value

3) Mean is chosen because it is a numerical data and there is

no extreme value
The most approprite measure for central of tendencies
