3. Protection against
over-voltage
Depending on extent, over-voltage can have negative effects on electronic
systems, leading to complete malfunction and possible destruction.
Regardless of the origin of such disturbances, it is therefore essential to install
appropriate protection measures.
It should always be remembered that the best protection measures cannot fulfil
their purpose unless correctly linked to a good quality earth connection.
Due to the diversity of installations, the different degrees of site exposure and the
variable nature of possible disturbances, it is impossible to establish specific rules
with regard to the types of protective measures to be implemented.
Nonetheless, you can avoid most problems by respecting a number of general
rules.

Note...
In case of difficulties, only use the services of companies
specialising in protective measures. They have advanced
knowledge of the problems encountered and are able to provide
solutions suited to your situation.

1. EXTERNAL DISTURBANCES

This term encompasses disturbances caused by atmospheric discharges (storms,

etc.) or by industrial machines.

These disturbances are generally channelled through power distribution networks

(electricity grid), and telephone lines.

It is therefore highly recommended to install mains and line lightning conductors

adapted to the desired level of protection, as close as possible to the P400XI:
distance < 50cm.

Types of protection to use:

• Mains lightning conductor: CITEL DS 42-400 type

• Line lightning conductor: CITEL DL 170 type

It is essential to correctly SEPARATE the lightning conductor input and output

cables (to avoid induction problems).

All these elements should be installed externally in relation to the P400Xi.

2. INTERNAL DISTURBANCES

AVR 2014 7
INSTALLATION GUIDE - PERAX P400XI

In contrast with the above, this term encompasses the disturbances caused
by industrial equipment specific to the site in question (machines in operation,
electrical discharge machines, power switches, etc.). Such equipment generates
electrical noise which spreads through all the existing cables in the facility.

To reduce couplings to a minimum, the following points should be taken into

account when connecting:

VERY IMPORTANT

Note...
Use screened telephone (or shielded) cable (twisted pairs of
0.6 or 0.9mm in diameter) to transmit data (low signal). Earth the
screens on both sides using mounting plate brackets.

WARNING!
Note...
Power cables must

placed in the same
ducting.

Note...
In multi-pair cables, use one pair for each data type. Leftover
pairs should be earthed on both sides.

Power cables must be perpendicular to low signal cables. At this level, care must
be taken in maintaining sufficient separation between the cables by installing a
half-loop in the cable that passes above.

In general, the power cables should not be in the vicinity of:

• The P400Xi rack casing,

• The sensors and data transmission cables,
• The mains power supply lines, transmission lines, and earth lines,
• Any unit containing electronic equipment.

power elements (variators, transformers, etc.), or in an electrical cabinet that might
contain power relays.

5.3 CONNECTING THE EXTENSION RACK CASINGS

The P400Xi is based on a modular architecture made up of 1 to 8 racks, 4 plug-in

cards connected via a RS485 bus, and an optional display (4 lines of 20 characters),
linked to the same bus.

6. PXIF/PXI12V
POWER SUPPLY
BOARD
The PXIF power supply board makes the following possible: adapting a 12 to
24VDC/VAC voltage available on-site as a useful voltage for the controller's
various cards; charging a 12V lead-acid battery; transmitting/receiving information
from the PXICPU processing module.

Using a 7Ah battery provides an average autonomy of 24 hours.

This card carries out the controller's internal measurements. It produces the
following input data:
- Measurement of the product's power supply voltage (0 - 35V)
- Measurement of the battery voltage (0 – 13.6V, PXIF card only)
- Measurement of internal voltages (0 – 5V)
- Measurement of the battery charge amperage (0 – 3A, PXIF card only)
- Measurement of the battery discharge amperage (0 – 3A, PXIF card only)
- Measurement of the internal temperature (to one tenth of a degree, PXIF card
only)

6.1 EARTH CONNECTION

The P400Xi's earth connection is set up using a 5mm spade terminal attached to the
PXIF card as indicated below, regardless of the input voltage.
Particular attention should be paid to the quality of the earthing connection (to be
carried out by a specialist), which should have a maximum resistance of 5 ohms. It
should have stable characteristics over time, to enable efficient electrical charge
and discharge flows.

Power
cable

Earthing connection (5mm spade terminal)

Note...
The large cross-section earthing cable (> ou = 2.5mm²), should
be connected DIRECTLY to the earthing strip along the shortest
possible route, with no loops or bends. The earthing connection
should not be taken from any other electrical equipment.

6.2 MASS (0V)

The P400XI's 0V's and the protective earthing are all internally interlinked. The -VIN,
-VOUT and -VBAT pins (power supply boards) and the +A pins (analogue inputs and
outputs) are all at the same potential and are linked to the earth connection pin via
the backplane.

6.3 CONNECTION

24VDC or 24VAC power supply (PXIF)

The power supply can be direct or alternating. AC/DC adaptation is automatic.

If the P400XI has several power supply boards, VIN, VBAT and VOUT are used in
parallel in order to balance their energy consumption.

The P400Xi PXICOM cards enable the user to operate different types of modem:

• PSTN modem managing the following modulations: V92, V34, V32, V22bis, V22 and
V23, with error correction according to V42 and compression according to V42bis:
MODSKTRTC
• GSM modem V32 data: PXIGSM.
• LS modem managing the V23R, V22 and V22Bis modulations: MODSPCLS

As an option, the P400Xi can be equipped with modem cards to meet standards of
countries outside the EEC.

WARNING!
The PXIGSM cards do not come with a SIM card. A Data subscription
with a telephone operator is required for data transmission via V32 or
GPRS.
To install your SIM card, switch power off and remove the front
of the card containing the PXIGSM (identifiable via the SMA
connector reserved for the GSM antenna). Pay careful attention to
the antenna's internal microwire. Take out the PXICPU/PXIGSM or
PXICOM/PXIGSM set from the rack. Put the SIM card in place, with
the chip touching the contacts, and lock the support. Place the set
back in the rack.
For individual safety reasons, the GSM antenna should be positioned
at a distance of over 20cm from all persons.

9.1 Discrete Input Connection

The PXI800, PXI822 and PXI16E cards enable discrete input connections. Discrete
input wiring is identical for PXI822, PXI800 and PXI16E cards.

No special configuration of the discrete inputs is required for implementation.

Each input is equipped with an OPTOCOUPLER which provides electrical insulation
between the sensor and the processing electronics.

POTENTIAL-FREE, CONTACT CLOSURE TYPE DISCRETE INPUT WIRING

The voltage required to power the discrete inputs is supplied by the PXIF card's
+VOUT output, producing a voltage of 13.6VDC with a maximum current of 200mA.

Leftover pairs in this cable must not be used to connect other signals, in particular
DISCRETE outputs or ANALOGUE inputs. They should be linked to the P400Xi earth.

If the data comes from power devices, relays should be installed.

wiring is identical on the PXI822 and PXI8S cards.

Use 1 pair per output (for example, flexible telephone wire with a cross-section of
0.9mm2).

Use a multi-pair cable in the case of several outputs. Leftover pairs in the cable
should be earthed. Leftover pairs in this cable must not be used to connect other
signals, in particular DISCRETE outputs or ANALOGUE inputs.

Avoid installing near to power cables.
