Lesson Plan in Science 7

LOCATING PLACES ON EARTH USING COORDINATE SYSTEM

I. CONTENT STANDARD: The learners demonstrate an understanding of the relation of

geographical location of the Philippines to its environment.

Learning Competency: Demonstrate how places on Earth may be located using a coordinate system
(S7LT-IIIJ-13)

Objectives: At the end of the one-hour session, the students should be able to:
a. Distinguish the difference between latitude and longitude;
b. Identify how places on earth may be located using coordinate system.

II. SUBJECT MATTER: Latitude and Longitude

SCIENCE IDEAS AND CONCEPTS:

 Latitude – Imaginary line on a map or globe that measure distance in degrees north or south
of the equator. It is measured with 180 imaginary lines that form circles around the Earth east-
west, parallel to the equator. A circle of latitude is an imaginary ring linking all points sharing
a parallel.
 Parallels – The circles formed by latitude lines.
 Longitude – Imaginary lines on a map or globe that measure distance in degrees east or
west of the prime meridian.
 Prime Meridian – the great circle on the Earth’s surface passing through the North and South
Poles which is considered 0° longitude. The prime meridian passes through Greenwich,
England, and is used as a reference point for measuring longitude east and west.
 Equator – An equator is an imaginary line around the middle of a planet or other
celestial body. It is halfway between the North Pole and the South Pole, at 0 degrees
latitude. An equator divides the planet into a Northern Hemisphere and a Southern
Hemisphere. The Earth is widest at its Equator.
 Coordinate system – is a method for identifying the location of a point on the Earth.

VALUES INTEGRATION:
Awareness and realization on Locating different places on Earth using latitude and
longitude.

III. LEARNING TASKS

A. ELICIT: (5mins)
1. Review students’ prior knowledge through a scenario and allow them to think.

Scenario:
Imagine you are flying on a plane where you can see beautiful skies and amazing views, but how do
you know where to go? There aren’t any signs floating in the air. So how do pilots know where to land
their planes?

B. ENGAGE: (10mins.) Individual activity

The teacher will engage the students in identifying or matching the different descriptions of latitude
and longitude. The teacher will prepare and provide the materials need.

C. EXPLORE: (15 mins)

1. Using their globe or world map, the students will describe the different lines of latitude and
longitude.

Guide questions:
a. Are the lines of latitude and longitude visible?
b. Describe the lines of latitude?

c. Describe the lines of longitude?

d. Where is the starting point of the latitude? How about longitude?
e. If you wish to find the 50°N, where should you look?
f. If you want to find 20°W, where should you look?

2. Students will identify the places nearest to the following rounded latitude and longitude
using their world map or globe.

Guide questions:
Latitude/Longitude Country/City
39.9042° N, 116.4074° E Beijing, China
48.85°N, 2.35°E Paris
14.59°N, 120.98°E Manila
35.6762° N, 139.6503° E Tokyo
40.7128° N, 74.0060° W New York City

D. EXPLAIN (20min.)

The teacher and students will check the activity together and discuss on how to properly
locate and identify the different places on Earth with latitude and longitude. The teacher will also
introduce the five special lines of latitude.

E. ELABORATE(5min.)
The teacher will give two situations or scenarios for students to identify and locate the places
on Earth using the coordinates given.

Situation 1:

You are an investigator and you were told to investigate in these coordinates: 20 degrees
latitude and 15 degrees longitude. Now locate it on the map Mark.

Situation 2:

You were born a pirate but a good pirate and you are the protector of the seas because the
sea is your treasure and you wanted to protect it from bad people. You received a report that there is
a poacher collecting endangered species of turtles in these coordinates 35 degrees latitude and 40
degrees longitude.

F. EVALUATE (10mins.)
Direction:
Read the questions properly and choose the best answer. Write your answers in a one-fourth sheet of
paper.

1. To locate exact places on earth, one must look at ____________________.

a. The line of latitude only.
b. The lines of longitude only.
c. A neighboring area to describe location.
d. The intersecting lines of latitude and longitude.

2. When measuring the lines of latitude, always begin with the ____________, which represents
0 degrees.
a. Prime meridian b. Equator c. Longitude d. Latitude
3. In which latitudes could you find the Philippines?
a. Between 0° and 30° N c. Between 120°E and 180°E
b. Between 0° and 30° S d. Between 120°W and 180°W
4. Philippines is located near the equator, thus it makes the weather of the country
___________.
a. Colder b. Warmer c. Hotter d. All of the above
5. Which of the following best describes the polar region or frigid zones?

I. These areas within the Arctic Circle and Antarctic Circle.

II. Countries in these zones go through four seasons – winter, spring summer, and autumn.
III. It is cold all year round and even during the summer months, it does not feel like summer at all.
IV. People who choose to live in these areas have to deal with temperatures that never go above
10°C.

a. I, II, III and IV C. I, III and IV only

b. I, II and III only D. II, III and IV only

G. Extend
Give students an activity for them to practice at home in locating and identifying places on
earth using latitude and longitude. And tell students to study on how to identify places on Earth using
landmasses and bodies of water especially the Philippines.
