CHAPTER 1:
PROJECT
BACKGROUND

1
DON HONORIO VENTURA STATE
UNIVERSITY
San Juan, Mexico, Pampanga

HISTORY OF THE PROJECT

According to Roman legend, soap was named after Mount Sapo, an

ancient site of animal sacrifices. The word “sapo” first appears in a book
written in Latin titled “Natural History” by Pliny and Elder an academic from
Pompeii. The first concrete evidence we have of soap-like substance is
dated around 2800 B.C. An excavation of ancient Babylon revealed evidence
that Babylonians were the first one to master the art of making soap, as
well as the Mesopotamians, Egyptians and the ancient Greek and Romans.
Soap is a product for cleaning made from natural ingredients that may
include both plant and animal products, such as animal fats, olive or
coconut oil. Soap wasn’t made and used for bathing and personal hygiene
but was rather produced for cleaning cooking utensils or goods or was used
for medicine purposes for at least 5000 years.

The meaning of the term "soap" has changed over time. Soap that was
formerly solely used for washing kitchen utensils and medicine can now be
used for hygiene, cleaning clothes, cleaning the house, and a variety of
other things.

Soap is something that practically everyone uses, usually many times a

day, and it's one of the most important tools for preventing the spread of
bacterial and infections. However, not all soaps are suitable for skin. Some
might have encounter skin irritation. Our skin is sensitive in chemicals.
Some companies now make soaps that include chemicals that can disrupt
hormones, causes allergies, cause reproductive problems, and increase the
risk of some cancers this soap is known as the “Commercially Made Soap”.
Commercially made soap causes problems for many people since instead of
mending our skin, it damages it. Unlike natural soap, they start with natural
ingredients that help the skin to grow, live, and be healthy. Natural soaps
are prepared with components found in nature or obtained from living
organisms, primarily plants. Natural soaps have a variety of benefits that we
can take advantage of. Soaps that have natural ingredients are highly
favored by many consumers due to several factors such as caring for
sensitive skin, faster and better healing of damaged skin and lesser harm to
the environment brought about by harmful chemicals.

And, we, proponents, chose to create a natural soap that is healthy for
the skin, particularly for individuals with sensitive skin. It can be used either
as facial and body soap. We decided to come-up with a unique soap that
consumers can carry wherever they go, it is what we called “Soap on the
Go”.

PROPOSED NAME OF THE BUSINESS

One of the most important things to prepare when starting a business is

a business name. The business is called "Savon Heros," which is a French
phrase that means "soap hero" implying that soap is our hero that we can
take with us wherever we go. It is made of natural materials and does not
include any chemicals.

COMPANY LOGO

Figure 1: Company Logo

EXPLANATION OF THE LOGO

Savon Heros is a French phrase which means “Soap Heroes”. We,

proponents named it “Heros” because soap is our hero in terms of cleaning
our body. The image of bag with mini soaps represents “On the Go” which
means consumers can bring it wherever they go. The leaf represents those
soaps are made-up of natural ingredients which can be found in plants.
Brown, yellow and orange represents the color of soaps which are Coffee
oats, Tomato and Lemon. We also added a little touch of fragrance in every
soap like Cinnamon, Rose and Lemon. White background because soap
represent cleanliness. A simple yet significant logo that can quickly capture
the attention of everyone.

Coffee Oats
Savon Heros is a handmade soap that are small in
Flavored Soap
sizes. They are good for all skin types, especially
sensitive skin, and focuses on cleansing, exfoliating,
and moisturizing our skin using ingredients derived from fruits and
vegetables such as lemon, tomatoes, and coffee oats. Addition to that, we
also added some fragrance oil in it.

The first product is the coffee oats flavored soap, which portrays a hand
holding a brown soap, indicating that it is a handmade soap, and is
surrounded by coffee grains, which are the soap's primary ingredient. It also
includes the tagline "You BEAN so much to me."

The second product is the tomato flavored soap, which portrays a hand
holding an orange soap, indicating that it is a handmade soap, and is
surrounded by tomatoes, which are the soap's primary ingredient. It also
includes the tagline "To-Matoe-SoulMate."

The third product is the lemon zest flavored soap, which portrays a hand
holding a yellow soap, indicating that it is a handmade soap, and is
surrounded by lemon fruits, which are the soap's primary ingredient. It also
includes the tagline "You’re the Zest!"

PURPOSE OF THE STUDY

You may not have realized it yet, but soap can help you battle infections
and disease, which is why it is so important. Soap is quite significant in
today's society. Soaps allow us to keep our body clean and free of dirt. We
decided to make a handmade natural soap that can be used either facial,
hand and body soap. We all know that some of us have sensitive skin that
they tend to have difficulties in choosing what hygiene to use for their body.
Savon Heros is a soap that cater everyone including those who have
sensitive skin. We come up on the idea of “On the Go” that contains natural
products like lemon, tomatoes and coffee oats that has no harmful effect in
our skin. They impove skin texture, revive dull skin, lighten dark spots, treat
acne and pores and many more to mention benefits.

We, proponents agreed in this product so that we can help those

consumers who are struggling on what to buy soaps that is suitable for
them. This feasibility study aims to prove that natural soaps are a better
alternative from the usual soaps we see on the supermarket shelves due to
the aforementioned reasons. Savon Heros is a product that would answer
the demand of Filipinos for quality natural soap at an affordable price.

MARKETING STUDY

In this chapter, the proponents will be able to determine if the proposed

study will be competitive in the market. The primary goal of marketing
study is to identify target consumers, understand their demands,

The purpose of this segmentations is to identify different groups within their
target audience in order to meet the needs and demands of the consumers.

 Geographic Segmentation – Geographic segmentation involves

segmenting the market based on location. We, the proponents opted
to focus our proposed study on the three (3) barangays of Mexico,
Pampanga which are San Antonio, Sto. Rosario and San Patricio.
 Demographic Segmentation – Demographic segmentation is

Demand Analysis

Demand analysis is a method of determining the consumers demand for

a product or service in a target market. It is important to understand the
demand for our products in order to respond to our customers' needs and
wants. It will be our basis if our chosen study was feasible. After extensively
analyzing the demand, we can now forecast the entire number of quantities
we will produce daily, weekly, monthly, and annually. The data representing
the historical demand for natural handmade soap will be calculated using
the population from 2018 to 2022. The datas will be divided by the average
household size in barangay Santo Rosario, San Antonio and San Patricio to
determine the total number of households.

Demand Analysis

In order to get the historical demand every year starting from 2018 up
to 2022, get the total population and divided by the average household of
4.8 to get the total household. A household is a family or social unit living
together. The survey conducted was carried out on a sampling basis, so
there might be a risk that the gathered information may not be accurate in
all cases. That’s why safety margin of error will be computed using Slovin’s
Formula and the percentage of error is excluded concerning the total
number of households so that a more accurate basis for the estimated
number of households. The safety margin of error is 7% for 150
respondents. The reliable basis of household now will be the basis in getting
the number of households that will be serves as the target market of the

Supply Analysis

Supply Analysis

Savon Heros wants to bring a new type of soap to the market that is
both healthy and affordable. Before processing the product, we’ll use
ingredients such as extract fruits for flavors, fragrance oil for scent, and the
primary ingredient, melt and pour clear base soap. Therefore, suppliers
were found with reasonable prices and high quality of products. We, the
proponents agreed to choose San Fernando, Pampanga Wet Market and its
nearby Supermarket to supply the necessary ingredients and supplies
needed for the production. On the other hand, Mexico Public Market will be
the alternative supplier of the ingredients.

Market Size and Share

The market size and share of our study was determined by the following
group of information. It was also based in our question number 5 and 7
which it shows the percentage of the respondents as our applied number of
consumers and where are they usually buy a soap.

37
DON HONORIO VENTURA STATE
UNIVERSITY
San Juan, Mexico, Pampanga

1. Demand for soap in the target market locations.

This was based on question #1 in which 100% of respondents used

soap. It implies that soap is a necessary item for consumers. We, the
proponents, chose to create natural soap with flavors that aren't widely
available. And this natural soap is On-the-Go, allowing you to take it with
you wherever you go.

2. Respondent’s type of soap they use.

Based on the survey results in question #2, majority of the respondents

(82%/123) are using bar soap. Savon Heros is a bar soap that can be used
on the face or the body, depending on the preferences of the user. It will
work to our benefit because most people in our target areas use bar soap.

3. Demand for organic/natural soap.

Based on the survey results, it shows that majority of the respondents

(98.7% or 148) have tried using organic/natural soap. This result helps us
to decide whether we’ll use chemical or natural ingredients in our chosen
product which is soap.

4. Willingness of the respondents to try new organic/natural

soap like coffee oats, lemon and tomato.

Based on the survey, it shows that 93.3% percent of respondents (140)

said they would be willing to try the said products. This represent the
possibility of demand for natural handmade soap like coffee oats, lemon and
tomato as well as potential customers.

5. Respondent’s willingness and preferred budget to spend for

organic/natural soap.

We proponents decided to price our product around 51-70 pesos. Based

on our survey, majority of the respondents are willing to spend 51-70 php
for organic/natural soap. And, in order to avoid losing demand due to price,
it will be one of the strategies to prevent it.

6. Respondent’s preference when buying soap.

Based on the survey, majority of the respondents consider soap benefits

when purchasing a product. Therefore, the main ingredients in our product
have benefits in our body that consumers can take advantage of and will
enjoy using.

Supply Analysis

The shop wants to introduce and innovate new variety and healthy
flavors of natural handmade soap in the market. Instead of using chemicals,
we used natural ingredients to make soaps that can help our skin. We, the
proponents agreed to choose San Fernando Public Market and its nearby
Supermarket in City of San Fernando, Pampanga to supply the ingredients
and the things that needed in the production. In the event that the San
Fernando Public Market is unavailable, the Mexico Public Market in Mexico,
Pampanga will serve as an alternative source of ingredients.

Market Size and Share

The following set of data was used to establish the market size and
share of our study. It was also based on our questions 5 and 7, which show
the percentage of respondents as our applied number of consumers willing
to try our proposed non-food product and where they typically purchase
soaps.

Market Size

Tables 1 to 13 contained information about our possible target

consumers, which was based on survey question 5. We, the proponents,
opted to think of them as a possible consumer base with certain soap
preferences.
