1. Explain the relationship and distinctions between those atmospheric mechanisms: climate change,
stratospheric ozone depletion, global warming, greenhouse gas effect.

2. If you calculate properly, you can see that amount of radiation trapped by the H2O vapor in the
atmosphere is much larger than the amount of energy trapped by CO2. Then why are we more
concerned with CO2 as greenhouse gas? How can CO2 (and other greenhouse gases) can increase the
temperature while their capacity for energy trapping is much smaller than that of H2O vapor?

3. HNO3 is formed by NO2 as follows. Calculate HNO3 concentration in µg/m3 at 1 atm pressure
and 22 ºC temperature for NO2 concentration of 1 ppm. (MWs of N = 14, O = 16 H = 1 g/mol, R
= 0.082 L.atm/mol.K)
OH (g) + NO2 (g) + M → HNO3 (g) + M

4. NO2 concentrations are measured in a photochemical reaction experiment, where NO2 is only
reacted with hydroxyl radical (OH) to form nitric acid (HNO3). NO2 level decreased from 11
ppm to 2 ppm in 60 seconds (reax. is as given in the previous example).

a) What is the second order rate constant for this reaction?

b) What is the half-life of NO2 during this study?

c) How many ppm of HNO3 will be formed with a decrease in the NO2 concentration from 11 ppm to 2
ppm?

d) What would the rate constant need to be changed to in order to decrease the time required to lower
the NO2 concentrations from 10 ppm to 3 ppm in 10 seconds?
