1. Slop oil recovery
Slop oil specialists
Systems for slop oil treatment are an important part of the Alfa Laval Oilfield delivery
program. They are the outcome of Alfa Laval's vast fund of experience in process and
separation technologies over the decades to optimize process performance. That's why Alfa
Laval can offer the optimal solution for treatment of such heterogeneous products as slop oil.
Proper treatment can convert all kinds of slop oil from oilfields, refineries, tanks and ponds
into valuable, marketable products.
By treating the slop oil in Alfa Laval's centrifugal systems an often serious pollution or
storage problem can be solved. At the same time expensive tank capacity or land area can be
released for more profitable use.
Originating from many sources, slop oils vary widely in composition and physical properties.
One common factor is that they contain both water and solid impurities, coarse as well as fine.
Often they form a very tight emulsion. Treatment of slop oil is therefore a difficult task and
most of the methods used for their recovery fail in one way or the other. Gravity settling is a
slow and often ineffective operation that requires plenty of space and sometimes excessive
amounts of expensive chemicals. Filter presses can only separate solids from liquids and have
a very low capacity. Incineration is an expensive process, whereby valuable oil is not
recovered.
Experience has shown that centrifugal separation in an Alfa Laval system is the most efficient
and cost effective method for slop oil treatment. This is the result of special design features of
the three phase disc stack centrifuge employed and the high g-force it develops. Depending on
source and quality, each slop oil requires its own technical solution. A single centrifuge may
suffice or a multi stage system may be necessary. Alfa Laval will tailor make the system that
best suits your slop oil.

2. Introduction to three phase disc stack centrifuges.
The disc stack
The active component in a disc stack centrifuge is a rotating separation vessel called the bowl.
The bowl rotation generates forces in excess of 5000 g which greatly enhance separation
velocity. Carefully designed internals provide extremely short settling paths for the oil
droplets, thus further increasing efficiency. The concept allows the hold up volume to be very
small, about 40 liters as an average, which in turn means that the machines are very compact.
Fitted inside the separation bowl there is a stack of up to 200 truncated cones - called the disc
stack. Between these discs annular channels about 0.6 mm high are formed.
Separation takes place within these channels which may be considered as a large number of
settling vessels all connected in parallel. This is why disc stack centrifuges are so efficient
when separating the smallest of droplets and particles.
Hydraulic pressure
The inner “sliding bowl bottom” is moved up and down by a hydraulic system built directly
underneath it. When this space is filled with water, the thrust obtained from the centrifugal
force presses the “bottom” upwards and closes the discharge ports. When the hydraulic
system is drained the bottom drops and the ports open. The opening and closing sequence is
automatically actuated and takes about 20 milliseconds, a time long enough for solids to be
discharged, but too short for oil to escape.

Process and instrumentation diagram description.
Feed piping arrangement
The module is fed using a positive displacement pump with an electromechanical speed
controller. This pump should be mounted as close to the feed tank a possible to avoid
cavitation when pumping highly viscous liquids. The oil enters the module and is first
directed through a strainer basket. Up and down stream of the strainer pressure indicators are
installed to give an indication of strainer condition.
A sample valve is provided to take feed samples and a temperature gauge will give feed
temperature. In addition to the flow control using the pump speed a constant flow regulating
system is provided so that flow can be optimized on the module itself.
This system utilizes a constant pressure valve in combination with a manually operated
membrane valve, the constant pressure valve is supplied with an air pressure set by a pressure
regulator (approx 2 bar). Excess flow is returned to the feed tank. The following
configurations are possible with the feed arrangement.
Both valves feeding the constant pressure valve are opened and both valves on the heat
exchanger (inlet and outlet) are closed, of course hot water feed and return valves should be
closed.
• Using the heat exchanger and returning cold excess feed flow to feed tank
Open both valves in the strainer discharge manifold and close the valve between the hot
product outlet and the constant pressure valve. Hot liquid will flow to the centrifuge and
excess cold liquid is returned to the feed tank, of course hot water feed and return valves
should be open.
• Using the heat exchanger and returning hot excess feed flow to feed tank
Open the valve feeding the heat exchanger and close the valve between the strainer and the
constant pressure valve. Open the heat exchanger discharge valve and open the valve between
the heat exchanger discharge and the constant pressure valve all excess hot liquid is returned
to the feed tank. This configuration is of particular interest when dealing with a very viscous
feed condition, of course hot water feed and return valves should be open.
After the membrane valve a mechanical flow indicator is installed, after the flow indicator a
three-way valve is installed to either direct the feed flow to the centrifuge or return the feed to
the feed tank. This three way valve is operated by a solenoid valve that can either be
controlled by the PLC or manually, for example when waiting for the feed temperature to
reach the required temperature. In case of any alarm originating in the centrifuge or its
peripheral equipment, the feed will be returned to the feed tank until such time that the fault
has been corrected.

Oil discharge piping system
Oil is discharged by the centrifuge through the built in paring disc (pump wheel). Once the
interface position has been determined and the correct gravity disc installed, the interface
position can be optimized using the constant back pressure valve. The back pressure is set
using the air-pressure regulator. Another very important parameter to monitor is the possible
loss of the water seal in the bowl this is why just after the constant pressure valve a manually
operated membrane valve is installed. Pressure indicators and switches are mounted up stream
and down stream of the constant pressure valve (refer to operating instructions for
explanation). Down stream the membrane valve a three way valve is installed to either return
the oil to the feed tank (when optimizing the system) or (once oil quality meets spec.)
discharge the oil into the clean product tank. This valve is also operated pneumatically
through a solenoid valve, in the pilot air line a throttle valve allows for smooth opening and
closing of the three way valve. In the manifold a sample valve is installed to enable operator
to take cleaned oil sample for analysis.
Only water is discharged by the centrifuge through the built in paring disc (pump wheel). One
very important parameter lo watch is that the water discharge pressure should be kept constant
so as to avoid shifting of the interface position.
The pneumatic valve in the water discharge manifold closes during solids discharge so that
the water seal in the centrifuge bowl is not lost. The valve is operated through a solenoid
valve the pilot air flow can be controlled using the throttle valve for smooth opening and
closing. A sample valve is also provided to check water quality discharged.
In the bottom of the module a sludge tank is integrated to collect the sludge that is
intermittently discharged by the centrifuge. Every time the centrifuge discharges, a quantity of
approx. 10 liters of liquid and sludge are discharged. The discharge creates a significant blast
for which reason the tank has a DN 100 vent pipe installed. Also in the sludge tank paraffin
could cause problems for which reason also the sludge tank is fitted with a heating coil. Exact
temperature control is not important so a membrane valve is installed in the hot water feed
line to allow a small quantity of hot water to circulate through the heating coil in the bottom
of the tank.

the pneumatic level switch an electric level switch is installed at a slightly higher
level to function as an alarm should the transfer pump not function i.e. if the level continues to
increase.
Air service equipment
Instrument air should be supplied to the module at 7 bar. This pressure is then reduced to 5
bar in the filter condensate trap with the main pressure regulator. All 6 solenoids and pressure
are supplied from a central feed line. Two pressure regulators are installed to control the back-
pressure on the two constant pressure valves. The back pressure on the oil outlet is used to
optimize the interface position.
The back pressure valve installed in the feed line is used to set the pressure in the feed
manifold so that the flow can be controlled using the flow control valve.
Note: Hardness max 180 ppm CaCO3, pH>6. Salinity max 60 ppm Cl.

Instalación
2. EMPALME

residual o gas sea eliminado.
A).
