increasing large muscle control: Walk more than they crawl

Communication • Reasoning• Memory

 Imitate the actions of an adult

Experience description:
The song “I Can Move My Body Like Anything” will be playing and the children and I will be
dancing along to the song. We will be walking around in a circle while dancing. I will be doing
specific movements to the song, and I will encourage the children to imitate me.

Materials
Pom poms
Scarves
“I can move my body like anything” song by Jack Hartmann
Phone to play the music

Scaffolding (child’s prior knowledge to build on):
Every day they dance and walk around in a circle so I will be building on their prior knowledge
of their routine and adding new movements for them to try.

Plan for carrying out experience (what caregiver will do):
I will dance along with the children and show them new dance moves. I will encourage the
children to follow my lead. I will also encourage the children to make their own dance moves
and follow their lead as well.

Assessment
A.  How would you be able to determine the success of this activity?
I am able to determine the success of this activity by how the children were able to complete my
objectives that I set in place. Even if the children are not able to hit all of the objectives, I will
still look for the children to be doing what they can. The activity was successful because the 18-
month-old was following me while walking in a circle and the 24-moth old was following some
of my movements while also following me. In the song it says to pop like popcorn, and I was
showing the 24-month-old how to do that with her entire body and when I stopped, she started to
do that same body motion. At another point in the song the 24-month-old child started jumping
and I encouraged that movement by jumping with her.

B.  Do you feel children's knowledge base will change after this experience?  (Do I see new
knowledge being learned in other areas?)

I feel that the children’s knowledge base will change because the children are learning more
about imitating their teachers and the large movements that they can do with their body. I see
that the children are understanding more words and are able to follow them when someone is
helping them understand the new word.
