A whole lotta love:
Studying burbot
on the Missouri
by Marc Kloker, FWP Region 6
Burbot (scientific name
Lota lota) are a fish species that
most folks don’t see very often in
northeast Montana, although they
are historically found in the Milk,
Missouri, and Yellowstone drainages.
Burbot are easily recognized
by their long, “eel-like” shape,
smooth skin, and single barbel.
They are the sole freshwater
member of the Cod family, and
have many common names
throughout the U.S., including
ling, eelpout, freshwater cod,
lingcod, cusk, mariah, and lawyer.
Many anglers target burbot for
their table fare, as their flesh tastes
like lobster, earning them another
nickname of “poor man’s lobster.”
Burbot are an S4 species of
concern in Montana, meaning
“Common, widespread, and
abundant (although it may be
rare in parts of its range). Not
vulnerable in most of its range.” FWP biologist Jared Krebs handles a burbot that was recently collected
