Poststructuralisme
Postmoderniteit: tijdsgeest, culturele mentaliteit
Deconstructie
Michel Foucault over Derrida: Hè writes so obscurely, you cant tell what he's saying.

Differance
Dubbele betekenis differer:
0. Verschillen (to differ), ruimtelijk
1. Uitstellen (to defer), tijdelijk

Discourse is ‘an organized and organizing bod[y] of knowledge, with rules and regulations
which govern particular practices’ (Storey, 128)
Discourse / vertoog:
1. maakt ‘spreken’ mogelijk
Artifactualiteit
>> vermenging van ‘feit’ en fictie’; woordspeling: art/fact-uality, artifact/actuality;
kunstmatigheid en feitelijkheid (Derrida)
'Actuvirtualiteit

HC 9 - 4 APRIL: ARCHIVE
History of archives
>> An archive is powerful; it is tied up with institutions and power.
Centres of calculation
Archives as governmental, law, power: those places where governments store the
information on their citizens.
The reasons for building up these archives are: economic (bv. taxes), security, health.
Michel Foucault:
The archive is first the law of what can be said, the system that governs the appearance of
statements as unique events
The database allows a closer relationship with the public. So it is a transition from a very
closed governmental archive to something very open and networked (like Wikipedia).
Archives:
- The Mundaneum (1924): a kind of analogue Wikipedia
- The Memex (1945): an interlinked archive of documents for the purpose of research. It
was though up for the building of working networks that can build of knowledge. Based on
association: through association you build a path through the archive of documents;
you can recall or share this path.
- Project Xanadu (1960-): an alternative to the worldwide web. Combined ideas from
Mundaneum and the Memex. Very ideological: libertarian values, against institutionalism.
- The World-Wide Web (c. 1994): software that you needed to get on the Internet.
Manovich suggests that the database is the symbolic form of our age
>> We live in an archival age.
Natalie Bookchin: commentary of the fact that archives like YouTube are both individual and
collective at the same time >> Social media as a way of archiving our lives

Media Specificity
Derrida: deconstruction >> Archive Fever: lecture delivered on the work of Freud
>> Contains important broad philosophical observation on media systems and memory.
Freud uses the Mystic Writing Pad as a model for our memory: the conscious and
unconscious.
>> Derrida is critical about this model:
>>>> He thinks that our memory is more like the relationship we form with the technology
we use. Media technologies don't just record our memories, they also form our memories.
- He thinks that the Mystic Writing-Pad is way too much an obscure technology to focus on.
There were more dominant forms of archival in the period Freud talks about.
- Lenard builds up a media system: he mediatizes his body, takes photographs and adds
notes about trust to them.
- Mediated dimensions of memory and the possibilities of aberrations
- Film itself demands memory work from the viewer. The viewer is also disoriented.
Derrida points out that archival technologies are important to us because we are finite. So
we persuade life not only through life, but also through technology.
>> The archive fever is the drive to expand the capacity of archival technology
>>>> from diskette to terabits
So the archive is no longer something that people use to archive their lives, but is now
something that people use that structures their lives.
Persistence
www.archive.org = the internet archive; issue of persistence has to do with who owns the
data online; issue of the maintenance; geocities controversy; raises questions of what
happens when we put our personal feelings on the internet
Ownership:
Where are the data held, political questions on who owns data and under which conditions

Gender
>> sociale constructie, wat mannelijk en vrouwelijk is
Sekse
>> de biologische sekse van een mens
Feminisme
structuren in hedendaagse (media)cultuur.
Gender en mediatheorie
Filmtheorie: basis in psychoanalyse, met name Laura Mulvey
>> (visual pleasure, to-be-looked-at-ness)
Michel Foucault

Tegenstellingen in benadering

HC 11 - 18 APRIL: INTERACTIVITY
Interactivity can be studied as a formal property (eigenschap) of new media, but
also within social, political and cultural context.
- Interactivity as a term comes up around WOII, because then cybernetics came around
- In the 1980's there is a new spike: because personal computers came around
Daily Me is a concept from Being Digital by MIT professor and Wired columnist Nicholas
Negroponte (1995): tools and media are programmable, and no single experience has to be
the same as any other
# Critique: uses and users are built in, or 'programmed' (see also: profiling)
- Also: unlimited choice leads to useless choices, or 'feature bloat'
(Mathew Fuller in It looks like you're writing a letter, 2001)
'Entangled' by machines
>> Not death of distance, but speeding up of ongoing social change, such as dissolution of
boundaries between work and leisure (Stephan Graham, 2007). You work and play on the
same machine. This is driven also by economics.
9
MEDIATHEORIE : HC Semester 2, Blok 2
Numerical representation
>> Digital and discrete
Modularity
>> Independent storage, any new media object can be broken up into multiple new media
>> A picture that is stored in pixels, that can be manipulated independently
Automation
>> Standard operations, functions that are pre-programmed
>> Automatic functions in Photoshop, templates in Word
Variability
>> No fixed state or path
>> Hypertext
Transcoding (computation)
>> Cultural expression is formed by principles of computer hard- and software).
>> Database as a symbolic form
- Manovich: myth of interactivity. How do the mediums formal properties serve to withhold
information or enable different interpretations? Cinema does this (Kuleshov effect)
- Manovich: closed and open interactivity. Interactivity is not an absolute property of new
media, but a relative one: how thoroughly can uses manipulate a media object?
Sociological and cultural approaches: interactivity doesn’t study what was a property of the
medium, but of the context in which it is used
Think of Foucault: the Panopticon as a generalizable model for constructing docile subjects.
>> Notion of discipline may be being replaced by notion of interactivity

MEDIATHEORIE : HC Semester 2, Blok 2
Affection-image
‘The Affection image is the close-up and the close-up is the face.’ De close-up abstraheert

>> Volgens Smith is de meeste identificatie van toeschouwers met personages acentral;
Cinema as event

HC 13 - 10 MEI: SIMULATIE
[Books Ngram viewer: when word was used often in books.]
[Etymology: the history of the meaning of words]
Historicizing simulation
First record of simulated in sense of 'imitative for purpose of experiment or training' is from
1966 (simulation in this sense dates from 1954).
- Herman Kahn, RAND corporation: predicting scenario of nuclear war - nuclear war
scenario
First order: 'counterfeiting' nature, imitating nature. Weerspiegeling van echt iets of van
fantasie. Beaudrillard associates this with Renaissance art.
>> Example: Mona Lisa (real or perfect woman?)

Media Archeology
>> Getting to the different layers of media. Digging down into the history of media, to learn
about the history of media. A reaction to the speed of the changing of new media.
It (MA) also looks at how old media were once also new.
- Gramaphone, Film, Typewriter (1986/1999): what was the effect if this old media when
they were new.
Kitler: "What remains of people is what media can store and communicate." Today's subject
is nothing more or less then what media can store and communicate,

Simulation not as illusory realities, but as calculated realities (not representing what exists,
but testing what may exist)
