Course Assessment System, Sem. 1 (2020-2021)

1. Attendance to the tutorials is compulsory. Students shall register for tutorials in the
First week.

2. Tutorials will commence in the third week. Students should familiarize themselves
with the assessment system and scoring rubrics, as given in this attachment.

3. There are three components of assessment for Course Work (45%): (1) written
assignment paper 25 marks, (2) Oral presentation 10 marks and (3) Class Discussions
10 marks. See attached scoring rubrics for each assessment component.

4. Written assignment paper, which carries 25 marks, must be submitted at the

appointed time (not later). It must be in the form of a small research (original work)
with proper references from authentic material.

The assignment shall be completed by the students jointly in a group mutually formed
not exceeding eight participants, on a topic related to any particular area of the course
outline. It should not be a topic directly mentioned in the course outline. The students
must inform the lecturer of the members of their group and obtain the approval of the
lecturer for the topic preferred by them by the end of the fifth week. The assignment
should be a well-researched write-up not exceeding 3000 words. The completed
group assignment must be submitted before the end of the 11 th week, i.e. before the
end of the week preceding the last lecture week of the semester. Your topics may
require modification, therefore early submission could be beneficial.  Please take note
of the following with regard to the assignment:

 The focus of the discussion should be on legal (fiqhi) aspects that are relevant.
 The writing must be well researched, and supported with evidences from
recgnized Fiqh sources of the four schools as necessary.
 Material quoted from other sources must be clearly distinguished from your own
words and cited in foot notes; they should not be mixed with the ideas and writing
of the writers.
 The finalized work should be submitted before the end of the week preceding the
last week of lessons.

5. Oral presentation: Every student is expected to make a short individual presentation

during tutorial hours, for which 10% of the marks are allocated. The presentations
will start from the 8th week, and continue until the 10th week. The presentation shall
be on any specific issue or a limited small area related to the tutorial topic for the day,
for which the presenter had prepared adequately by thorough research and study.
Providing a general summary of the topic would not be accepted. Marks shall be
given based on knowledge and understanding of the topic as well as the amount of
research done by the student as evident from the presentation.
11
6. Reading from a written paper is not accepted. Marks will be given based on the
rubrics. This is also not teamwork, and the assessment will be individual.

7. Class discussion/participation will carry 10 marks. Active participation in the

tutorial discussion in the tutorial topic for the day is expected. Serious preparation and
active discussion will be required to score in accordance with rubrics. Class
discussion and participation will be monitored throughout the semester.

8. Scoring rubrics are attached. Study the rubrics carefully in order to know the
assessment criteria.
