Chapter I

INTRODUCTION

Working and studying at the same time is not an easy task, it requires a lot of
effort. Balancing of time between studying and working can be a tough situation. Putting
so much of one’s mental and physical energy into this uneasy arrangement usually leaves
a feeling of fatigue, stress, or both. Working students are usually belong to families with
low average income, where survival is a must. Working while studying could have
positive effects on one thing and negative on another, and that it would affect different
kinds of students differently. Students who work are more confident and better time-
management skills than students who are not employed. Working can give a satisfactions,
especially on being independent, working also provide training and experience. On the
other hand, working can be a factor for a student to stop schooling because of the money
that they’ll earn. Students working assume extra responsibilities, besides studying, with
the goal of earning for school fees and other needs. Schooling now a days costs are high
that students also want the amenities that extra money brings. Working, at the same time
studying, has some positive and negative effects on their achievement, self-esteem, and
time management.

A working student is a person who has work and at the same time go to school
as a student. Being a working student needs a lot of effort not only to his work but also in
their studies. In the Philippines, a lot of teenagers who work are those who have no
capability to finance their tuition fee, bills in the school and their allowance by their
family. Education is very important to Filipino family they really work hard to send their
children to school and finish their education as long as they can.

Studying is all about learning to be a part of the practical world and the
challenges that it brings with it. Working also helps not only to fill in financial problem
and to give a first-hand experience, but also to encourage to be independent, be creative,

and be productive, since working helps in developing a better understanding of what is
being taught. However, the more time a student devotes to employment the less he or she
has for either academic or social activities. For some students, especially those in
traditionally underserved populations, taking a job is not a matter of choice, but necessity.
They need to work to save for schooling or even to supplement family.

However, working while studying might have a (positive or negative) impact to

the students’ emotion, behavior and, feelings.

This study seeks to explore the struggles and difficulties of the students who
study and work at the same time. The student’s behavior will be considered in this study
as it is connected to the struggles and difficulties encountered by working students.

Objectives
The purpose of this study is:
 To know how working and studying will impact to working students.
 To determine the struggles of working students in school.
 To determine how working students face the terms of academic difficulties in
school.

Scope and Limitation

This study focuses on the reasons why students in the Philippine Women’s
University CDCEC Calamba work while studying and, the factors affecting their
academic performance.
The study will take place in the Philippine Women’s University CDCEC Calamba

Statement of the Problem
1.) What are the struggles faced by the students when working while studying?
2.) How do they solve/overcome the struggles?
3.) What would be the impact to the student’s academic performance?

Significance of the Study

Students, the study will help students (esp. working students) know the academic
struggles they will encounter in school. And, they will know how to solve and/or
overcome academic struggles.

Teachers, the study will help teachers understand the academic struggles encountered by
working students in school. Teachers will be guided by this study on what to do with
students experiencing academic struggles.

Future researchers, the study will guide future researchers about academic struggles
faced by working students in school and how will they solve them.

REVIEW OF REALATED LITERATURE

This chapter includes the ideas, finished thesis, and conclusions that supports

the focus of this study. The review of literature was drawn from multiple areas believed

to be relevant to this study for deeper understanding of The Academic Struggles

Encountered by Working Students.

Foreign Literature

According to Allie Grasgreen (November 15, 2012), finances are affecting student’s

academic experience, with ability to get a job as a big factor in deciding on a major,

according to this year's national survey of student engagement.

Marisol Medina (2014) said that, not being able to pay your bills may affect more than

just your credit, a new study suggests.

According to a new study led by Harvard, Princeton and Warwick University

scientists, financial hardship may directly influence a person’s cognitive ability. The

study followed Indian farmers that are paid once a year upon selling off their harvest and

found the farmers’ cognitive abilities to be compromised significantly before receiving

their pay.

The farmers were tested at a moment of accumulating debt before selling their

harvest and once again after receiving a lump sum for the year. The results were that once

their financial worries had been resolved, the same farmers scored much higher than they

had previously.

The study connects poverty to low cognitive ability and concludes that financial

stress affects a poor individual’s IQ more than a well-off individual’s. Valentina Lee,

Assistant Professor of Psychology at FIU, studies stress and its effects. Lee refers to two

different types of stress: stressors and strains. Stressors are the conditions that require

some sort of adaptation from the individual and strains are the consequences of facing

those stressors.

Allie Grasgreen (2012) argues that, finances are affecting students' academic

experience, with ability to get a job as a big factor in deciding on a major, according to

this year's National Survey of Student Engagement.

The recession may be over, but as tuition and debt continue to rise, many students are still

under extreme pressure to make ends meet – and for some, it’s at the expense of

academic pursuits.

In part responding to critics who wondered why they hadn’t explored this earlier,

the creators of the National Survey of Student Engagement year asked how finances were

affecting students’ academic activity. The results, NSSE director Alexander C.

McCormick said, are “not too surprising, but worrisome.”

The results, NSSE director Alexander C. McCormick said, are “not too surprising,

but worrisome.” About 60 percent of full-time seniors who work more than 20 hours per

week said it interfered with their academic performance, but just as many said they

frequently looked into working more hours to cover costs. Further, 32 percent of first-

year students and 36 percent of seniors said financial concerns interfered with their

academic performance. And 27 percent of freshmen and 34 percent of seniors said they

“often” or “very often” chose not to purchase required academic materials because of the

cost. “You have to wonder what the impact is,” said McCormick, who is also an associate

professor of educational leadership and policy studies at Indiana University at

Bloomington.

Ones hopes that students are renting textbooks or borrowing from a friend rather

than simply going without, but even then, he said, if a student can’t open a textbook

whenever needed, it’s not ideal. Perhaps it’s also not surprising, then, that when asked

whether a series of factors “substantially” influenced their choice of major, 55 percent of

seniors said “yes” to having the ability to find a job (with more minority than white

students saying so), and 52 percent noted potential salary. Nearly 59 percent pointed to

career mobility or advancement, and 41 percent said potential for management positions.

Still, academic interest and personal talents won out, with 89 percent of seniors

answering in the affirmative to both.

Time management refers to the process of planning and exercising conscious control

of time spent on specific activities, especially to increase effectiveness, efficiency or

productivity. It is a juggling act of various demands of study, social life, employment,

family, and personal interests and commitments with the finiteness of time. Using time

effectively gives the person choices on spending/managing activities at their own time

and expediency.

Many experts would go as far to say that without certain knowledge of Time

management, a career would be somewhat limited if it involves performing multiple tasks

in a certain time. Therefore, it is recommended that Time Management becomes a

necessity for any global businessperson who wishes to advance his or her career in the

global marketplace.

In a research conducted by Brigitte, Claessens, Eerde, & Rutte, (2005) he said that

Time management plays a vital role in improving student’s academic performance and

achievements. Each and every student should have time management ability which

includes setting goals & priorities, using time management mechanism and being

organized in using time. Here time management is only possible through self-motivation;

performance, ability and motivation.

In Shazia Nasrullah and Muhammad Saqib Khan’s (2015) study, they found that to the

relationship between the time management skills and academic achievement of the

students. Time management is very important and it may actually affect individual’s

overall performance and achievements.

According to Campbell and Svenson’s (1992) research time management refers to

the way students manage their time in order to have academic performance which is

invaluable for academic success. Thus, it is important for students to know the first step

of time management, giving priority to the important matters, and should remain focused

on issues essential for success.

According to Denlinger (2009).There is no one right way to manage our time;

however; it is important to get to know our self, so we can make good decisions about

how to use our time. Likewise, in the process of providing educational services this issue

has been a subject of interest discussed and emphasized in several platforms and an

attempt has been initiated to assess and analyze time and the time management attitudes

and behaviors of students in educational institutes.

Workload components are the key tasks characteristics influencing human

performance which define how people accomplish a required work and in what manner a

person comprehends the task. Task demand is the ratio between time needed to complete

a certain task and the available time to satisfy it and pointed out that workload is a

combination between the available resources of an operating system, task demand, and

people’s capability. Workload influences and decreases the capacity of an individual. A

rise in the task demand level may prompt errors and an increment in accordance to

response time. In addition, high-task workload and complexity are thought to be two of

the most critical factors in the reduction of performance quality.

The aspects considered in this study include over all workload, academic performance,

unit load, age, sex, type of work (part-time or full-time), health status, lifestyle and

current year standing of the students. Variables other than what is specified were not

being treated in this study.

According to R.J. Snelgar’s (1989) research, Stress and the Part-time Student:

Work Factors Associated with Failure rate. This study concluded that there is a

relationship between stress and failure rate. The study thinks that this was caused by an

unhealthy environment, which then results into stress in school and increase the student’s

tendency to fail on exams. In addition, they said that the family’s status can contribute to

the students stress level making them more pressured and not focused in school.

According to Fotaratnam & Buchanan’s (2004) study, Balancing the demands of School

and Work: Stress and Employed Hospitality Students, to be one of the working college

students, one should know how to balance work, school, and life. This balancing cannot

be done if we will let the pressure goes out of hand.

This study shows that more female first year college students, actually perceived a greater

level of stressors than male students, that leads to a high amount of stress. But this

stressors were not work nor school related.

In the study conducted by Shannon M. Suldo, Elizabeth Shaunessy, Amanda

Thalji, Jessica Michalowski, and Emily Shaffer they stated that the Source of stress for

primary source of stress by IB students was related to academic requirements. While

Local Literature

An article written by a Filipino anonymous blogger wrote an article entitled “ A

Student’s Sacrifice. The use name of the blogger is Lostsoul. In her article it was testified

that being a working student requires sacrifice to achieve your aspirations. Also an article

reported by Bermadette Sembrano of ABS-CBN news, entitled “Only Half of Working

Students Finished College” (2010). It was affirmed that 216,000 students in the country

are currently juggling school and work. According to latest data from the Commission on

Higher Education (CHED). The figure is about 85 of the total number of college students

in the country. CHED said working students today are mostly into food service,

entertainment and sales, apart from their usual stints as library and research assistance.
