Financial Aid Reflection

1. Federal Financial Aid- What are the different types of federal financial aid available to
students? How do you apply for federal financial aid? What benefits do students receive
from this type of financial aid?
Different types of federal financial aid available to students include grants, federal
work-study programs, and subsidized loans. You apply for federal financial aid by
completing a FAFSA application. Students benefit from this type of financial aid by being
able to pay less in tuition and interest.

2. State Financial Aid- What are the different types of state aid available to students? How
do you apply for state financial aid? What benefits do students receive from this type of
financial aid?
Different types of state aid available to students include grants, such as the Cal Grant
and scholarships. You apply for state financial aid by completing a FAFSA and ensuring
that your high school submits your verified GPA and transcript to your state’s financial
aid office.

3. School Specific Financial Aid- Which schools did you research? Describe one grant or
scholarship that is offered at each school. What benefits do students receive from this
type of financial aid?
I researched UC San Diego and UC Irvine. Both schools offer the Blue and Gold
scholarship to certain eligible students. This type of financial aid benefits students
because it does not need to be repaid.

4. Private Scholarships- Describe two scholarships that you found interesting during your
research. What are the benefits of using this type of aid to fund your education?
Two scholarships that I found interesting during my research included the San Diego
Foundation and the Gates Scholarship. The benefits of using this type of aid to fund your
education are that you do not need to repay them, allowing you to avoid student loans.

5. Military Financial Aid- Do you or your family plan to or have served in the military? If so,
describe at least one military financial aid program that is available to you? What
benefits do students receive from this type of financial aid?
Neither me or my family have or plan to serve in the military. Students benefit from the
G.I. bill by having their educations paid for.

6. Personal Financial Aid Plan- After reviewing the different types of financial aid available
to students, what plan do you have for covering the costs of post-secondary education?
Write a paragraph that summarizes the total cost you expect to pay for post-secondary
education, the sources of aid you plan to use to cover these costs, and when and how
you plan to apply for each program. You may also need to consider alternate sources of
income such as a college fund or savings plan that has already been set aside.
My plan for covering the costs of post-secondary education includes utilizing grants and
the federal work-study program, as well as continuing to apply for scholarships. The total
cost I expect to pay for post-secondary education is about $25,000. The sources I plan to
use to cover these costs include the Pell Grant, the Cal Grant, federal-work study, and
scholarships. I already applied for the Pell Grant, the Cal Grant, federal-work study in
March. I have applied to a few private scholarships, and will continue applying while I am
in college.
