IV. PROCEDURES Teacher’s Activity Students’ Activity

A. Reviewing previous lesson or
presenting the new lesson (The teacher shows some pictures of a
self-employed individuals.) A sari-sari store owner
What can you say about each picture?

A fruit vendor
A balut vendor

Their source of income is business.

What is their source of income?
Yes! Their source of income is business.

In business, the basics of mathematics is

needed.

(The teacher shares a story about the

balut vendor.)

Now, using the rules of addition how

are you going to add integers?
Do you have any idea? No sir.

That’s good! Yes sir.

Are you ready to learn?
But before that lets have a review first.
Using a number line,
try to solve the following given?
a. (-5) + (-4)
b. (-8) + (5)

Alright.
a. (-5) + (-4) Sir, I am going to move 4 places to
the left side of 5.
What are you going to do?
You are right!
Now, to add (-4), move to the left 4
places. Sir, (-5) + (-4) = -9
Since we end on -9.....
What is the sum of (-5) + (-4)?
Very good! (-5) + (-4) = -9

How about
b. (-8) + (5) ?
Sir, by moving 5 places to the right
Again,using a number line….
of (-8).
How are you going to complete the
process in finding the sum of this given? Sir, it is because you are adding a
Correct! positive integer which is 5.
Why?

You got it! Yes sir.

Now, to add positive 5 or to add 5, just

move to the right 5 places. Right? Sir, (-8) + (5) = -3
Since we end on (-3).....
What is (-8) + (5) ?

B. Establishing a purpose for

the lesson What have you observed on the Sir, on illustration a, 4 places is
illustrations? being move to the left because a
negative integer, -4, is added.
Great!
On illustration a – a negative 4 is being
added so you just move 4 places to the
left of 5.
Observations:
( 1. Adding a negative integer – n to m
means moving along the real line a
distance of n units to the left from m.)

How about on illustration b? Sir, 5 places is being move to the

That’s right! – 5 places is being move to right because a positive integer, 5 ,
the right of -8 because a positive is added.
integer, 5 , is added.
(2. Adding a positive integer n to m
means moving along the real line a
distance of n units to the right from m.)

C. Presenting examples/ (What if you are asked to add; (-25) + (-

instances of the new lesson 14)? Yes sir.
Is it still applicable to use the number
line in adding these integers?

How about (-38) + 15?

Possible, you can still manage to solve
this given, but it takes time to find its
sum.

D. Discussing new concepts and Now, here is the other way..

practicing new skills #1 There are two rules in adding integers:
1. If the integers have the same
sign, just add the positive
equivalents of the integers and
attach the common sign to the
result.
2. If the integers have different
signs, get the difference of the
positive equivalents of the
integers and attach the sign of
the larger number to the result.

The first rule implies that in adding

What does the first rule implies? either a positive number plus
positive number;
( +) + (+) 0r
a negative number plus a negative
number; ( -) + (-), just add the
positive equivalents of the integers
and attach the common sign to the
result.

The second rule also implies that in

How about the second rule? adding either a positive number
plus a negative number;( +) + (-) 0r
a negative number plus a positive
number; ( -) + (+), just subtract the
positive equivalents, and attach the
sign of the larger number to the
result.

First rule sir.

Example1. (-25) + (-14)
Which of the 2 rules is applicable?
Yes. You are right…
The two integers have the same sign.
By applying rule no. 1, add the positive Sir, the two integers have a
equivalents. common sign of negative.
That is 25 + 14.= 39.
Now, what is the common sign?

Alright.
Since the two addends have the same
sign of a negative, just copy the
common sign. The result is -39
Thus, (-25) + (-14) = -39 Sir, the signs are not the same.

Example 2 (-38) + 15 Sir, by applying rule the second rule,

What have you noticed? subtract the positive equivalents.
That is right..
So, How are you going to solve this
one?

Alright! By applying rule no. 2, subtract

the positive equivalents.
That is 38 -15 = 23
Since the larger number has a negative
sign, the result is -23.
Thus, (-38) + 15 = -23

E. Discussing new concepts and How about this given example?

practicing new skills #2 Example 3:
( -14 ) + ( 22) +( -16)+ ( 8) =

Do you have any idea? No sir.

Actually, there are a lot of ways in
solving this given.
But here is the best way..

If there are more than two addends in

the problem the first step to do is to
combine addends with same signs and
then proceed in applying the rules on
adding integers,
-( 14+16) +(22+8 )
=-30 + 30 = 0 None sir.
Any question?..
Solution:
Try to solve this ( 30)+ (70 )+ (9 )+ ( -155)
Example 4: =( 30 + 70+ 9 ) + (-155)
( 30)+ (70 )+ (9 )+ ( -155) =109+(-155)
= - 46
(by combining the same sign addends)
=( 30 + 70+ 9 ) + (-155)
=109+(-155) = - 46

155 – 109 = 46

Since 155 is the larger number and has

a negative sign, the result is – 46.

F. Developing mastery Activity (Think-Pair-Share) Solve the following:

(Leads to Formative The students turn and discuss with 1. 110 + (-75)
Assessment 3) someone sitting next to them, and 2. 16 + (-38)
then share with the whole class 3. (-36) + (-27)
4. 97+ (-65) + 19 + (-83)

G. Finding practical applications * Let the students share some ideas on

of concepts and skills in daily how to apply addition of Integers in
living daily living.
* Post a real life problem related to
addition of integers.
Example 5:. A vendor gained P50.00 on
the first day; lost P28.00 on the second
day, and gained P49.00 on the third
day. How much profit did the vendor
gains in 3 days?

How are you going to solve this

situation? Sir, the profit that the vendor gains
First, Identify the problem. in 3 days.
What is being asked?

Yes! The problem is the profit that the

vendor gains in 3 days
Second, Determine the given.
(What are the given?) Sir the vendor has no income and
First day the vendor gained P 50.00 (so yet the vendor lost P 28.00.
there is an increased or positive result
of P 50.00

Second Day the vendor lost P 28.00

(What do you mean by this?
Yes, it means missing or gone that
implies/indicates a negative result of P
28.00
Third Day the vendor gained P 49.00
Solution:
50 + (-28) + 49 = 50 + 49 + (-28)
= 99 + (-28)
= 71
Hence, the profit of the vendor gains in
3 days is P 71.00

H. Making generalizations and Let some students generalized of what In this lesson, I learned…
abstractions about the lesson they learned about the lesson. 1. If the integers have the same
sign, just add the positive
equivalents of the integers
and attach the common sign
to the result.
2. If the integers have different
signs, get the difference of
the positive equivalents of
the integers and attach the
sign of the larger number to
the result.
3. Addition Tricks
If there are more than two
addends in the problem the
first step to do is to combine
addends with same signs
and then proceed in
applying the rules on adding
integers,
