1. INTRODUCTION
Thank you very much for purchasing Cosmo’s Master Chamber MC-F02A. This manual provides the feature,
the operating instruction and the operational precautions for MC-F02A. Please read this manual thoroughly
before using the Master Chamber.

Safety Precautions
This section provides instructions to abide by for using the product safely without risking physical injury to the user
and other persons, and/or damage to your assets.
Symbol Meaning
Failure to take or avoid a specified action could result in death or serious physical
WARNING harm to the user.
Failure to take or avoid a specified action could result in minor physical harm to the
CAUTION user or damage to your assets.
∆ This symbol denotes a warning to alert the user. Followings are the specific descriptions of the warning:
WARNING
a) Do not apply air pressure beyond the pressure rating of the product. Excessive pressure input could
cause catastrophic component failure and/or injury.
b) Discontinue using the product when:
• The product emits abnormal noises
• The product cannot be operated as indicated in the operations manual.

CAUTION
a) Do not use the product in places that are damp, that are exposed to direct sunlight or that are outside the
temperature range of 5°C (32°F) to 40°C (104°F). Using the product in such environment could result in
malfunctions or failures.
b) Mount the product in firm position in a frame capable of fully sustaining its load. Do not install the unit in a
violently vibrating, sloped or any other rickety place. If installed in these environments, the product could
fall down or drop, resulting in physical harm.
c) Do not step on top of the product or place a container filled with water, oils, soapy water, or other similar
objects on its top. These objects might spill, causing physical harm, electrical shock hazard, rust or other
damage.
d) Do not disassemble the product. If disassembled, the product could malfunction, resulting in physical
harm or electrical shock hazards.
e) When carrying the product, hold it by the bottom to keep it from dropping. If dropped, unit could be
damaged or result in physical harm.

2. OVERVIEW
Differential pressure decay leak tester requires a non-leaking reference volume, called master. Ideally, the master
should be identical to the workpiece, but it is not always possible. The master chamber can replace the master
where:
Fixture identical to the workpiece can not be built.
Several workpieces are tested in a production line.
Workpiece has possible deformation.

3. STRUCTURE AND FUNCTION

Fig. 1 shows the structure of the Master chamber. The internal surface area and the volume are made to be
altered with fins and collars. The fins and the collars are designed not to move.
When air is pressurized, its temperature rises due to adiabatic compression. The process of stabilization of
pressurized air molecules is done by a heat transfer between workpiece surface and the air, which causes the air
temperature to gradually approach to that of the workpiece. If the pressurization timer is long enough, the
temperature of the applied air becomes equivalent to that of the workpiece. However, if the pressurization timer is
too short, those temperatures won’t be equalized, and it causes pressure drop, which appears to be a leak.
When workpiece and master are identical, the adiabatic effect is canceled and the test time can be shortened.
However, if they are not identical, diversity in shape causes difference in heat stabilization speed, which appears to
be a leak. Although the shape of the Master chamber is different from that of the workpiece, their heat effects can
be adjusted with fin arrangement. Even when the internal space volume is kept unchanged, if the fins are
arranged at even intervals and the space distances are reduced (the distances travelled by the air molecules are
reduced), the heat stabilization is facilitated. If the fins are arranged in such a way that there is no space between
them, it takes far longer for heat stabilization.

Therefore, even when the internal volume of Master chamber is smaller than the workpiece, the Master chamber
is capable of balancing it by adjusting the number of fins.

4. HOW TO USE MASTER CHAMBER
a) For Master chamber, the temperature effect caused by a difference of shape is greater than that of internal
volume during CHG (pressurization) time.
Therefore, even when the internal volume of Master chamber is smaller than a workpiece, Master chamber is
capable of balancing it by adjusting the number of fins.
b) First, set the fins in the Master chamber by equal distance, and prepare a non-leaking workpiece that is at
ambient temperature. Execute a leak test with programmed timer.
When air is pressurized, its temperature rises due to adiabatic compression and then it goes down due to the
heat transfer between air and the internal surface of the workpiece. This fluctuation is indicated as
differential pressure. Positive reading means that heat stabilization of workpiece is slower than that of
master. In that case, reduce the number of the fins or widen the distance among fins in the Master chamber.
c) Repeat the adjustment by widening space among fins to reduce the differential pressure of the reading during
DET stage.
d) When there is a large variation in the leak rate even if the number of the fins is adjusted, it is possible that
insufficient pressurization or equalization time has caused them. In such a case, adjust again at a later time.
e) Readjustment of the fin arrangement may be required if the differential pressure data shifts due to climate
change depending on seasons.
f) In case of mounting the temperature sensor in Master port side for temperature compensation, please
remove the seal (Round-shaped seal is attached at delivery time) on M3 thread hole located on the top of
Master Chamber.

NOTE: MC-500B to 5000B are provided with a detachable handle for the fins. The handle should be screwed
complete into the shaft before you lift the fins, and be sure to lift them vertically.
NOTE: Be sure to mount Master chamber vertically.
