Naw Hla Hla San (201800235) Final Teaching Reflection

Final Self-reflection (general reflection of teaching experience)

Life is all about the experience. Practical experience is highly demanded in accessing any type of

job. Indeed, teaching is one of them. It is such a privilege and honor for having an opportunity to

do my internship at Adventist International Mission School (AIMS). I deeply can say that AIMS

is one of the best Adventist International School because the school not only promote academic

excellence but, the school also builds a good character in each student.

Doing an internship for four months at AIMS, I have gained plenty of experiences through

assisting homeroom teachers with classroom management, serving as an instructional assistant,

preparing the materials, and doing occasional teaching. It is such as unforgotten experience to

have a skillful homeroom teacher throughout doing internship because I could partner with my

homeroom teacher in the shared goal of improving student achievement. At the same time, my

homeroom teacher is not just flexible with me, but, she also provides guidance and support in

terms of developing my lesson plan and doing occasional teaching.

For instance, without the help and guidance of my university supervisor and homeroom

teacher, I may not able to gain the valuable experiences that I should have because reflecting on

myself alone is not sufficient. I am being appreciated with the feedback that I have received from

them because I could be able to realize what are my strengths and weaknesses. At the same time,

it is the best opportunity to upgrade my teaching performance in moving forward in my teaching

profession.

Additionally, I also learn that when it comes to teaching, having teachers alone is not enough,

but obtaining sufficient teaching equipment is highly demanded. I can see that AIMS promotes

sufficient teaching materials that are needed which certainly helps the teachers to develop

effective lessons and increase efficiency and productivity. Plus, the teachers also could develop

lessons upon prior student knowledge with desired quality of work.

In a similar vein, the school also maintains a safe and caring environment that flourish students’

physical skills, develops effective communication skills, and encourages wholesome respect and

attitude toward one another. It is such as worthy experience to get to teach at AIMS, and closely

assist and guide Grade-2 (Beryl) students with their studies as a Student-Teacher. Indeed, all of

them are unique, sweet, and polite to all the teachers.

Honestly, the students do not really welcome me on my very first day of teaching. It is just

normal. However, I occasionally could develop a strong relationship with students through

listening and understanding their concerns. I can tell that they feel safe and happy when adults

pay attention and listen to their concerns. In fact, I could not able to go to school for several

weeks and was not able to closely supervise and guide the students due to the outbreak of

COVID-19 at the AIU campus. I feel highly appreciated for the result that I have put, when my

homeroom teacher texted to me, “Hla Hla, students really miss you. Although you are not at the

school, they are still greeting you by saying Good morning teacher, Hla Hla.” Indeed, paying

attention and listening to students’ concerns is the best practice in developing a solid relationship

between a new teacher and students.

Moving forward, AIMS is a school that upholds a diverse population of students and teachers.

As an internship student, I could learn to interact and socialize with different students and

teachers who are from different nations, ethnic and socio-cultural backgrounds. Honestly, I really

appreciate the experiences at AIMS because I highly believe that it is very crucial to learn to see

different perspectives from different teachers and students to develop genuine social

relationships with diverse people and gain valuable professional skills in teaching.

Coming April 29, 2022, is the last day of my internship at AIMS and it will be such heart-

touching to say “Goodbye” to my homeroom teacher and all Grade-2 (Beryl) students. Certainly,

the internship experience that I have gained from AIMS and the relationship that I have built

with teachers and students will last forever in my heart.
