Jennifer, what’s one of
the craziest things you’ve
done abroad?
– Theresa Clark, Austin
When I was abroad in Hong
Kong, my friends and I decided
to party in Lan Kwai Fong,
HK’s central nightlife area, during
a Level 8 tropical storm warning.
It was probably the best decision
I’ve ever made because we met
this rich (and hot) entrepreneur/
teacher/model who we ended
up partying with. We popped
bottles all night long while riding
out the storm!
Abby, where is the coolest
place that you’ve been?
– Jillian Lawson, Lubbock
France, hands down. I am
completely head-over-heels in
love with the people, the language,
and the food. If you get there,
make sure that you visit other
places other than Paris. Sure, it’s
an AMAZING city, but the rest of
the country is pretty awesome, too.

Ryan, where’s the party scene
when studying in Europe?

I reccomend   Ibiza, Spain. Seri-
ously... go to this place. After the
night parties are the after-hours
clubs which open at 8am and
last until noon. After that, return
to your residence and sleep it off
or just head to the beach and get
ready for another night of party-
ing. Honestly, not a lot of sleep
happens there.
Katie, what do you think
students have the most to
gain from studying abroad?
– Alysse Whatley, Grayson
Studying abroad is one of those
experiences in college that I hope
I get to be a part of because the ex-
periences and knowledge that you
walk away with are unforgettable.
Of course there is the educational
aspects that are the most impor-
tant, but it’s also the chance to
experience something out of your
comfort zone. The international
parties with international boys and
international beer all sound like a
huge pro for studying abroad!

in Spanish if they seemed

I’d pretend to be German
and say random phrases like

Hope arrived in Spain right
in the thick of FIFA World
Cup excitement. Although
the games were held in South
Africa, the cultural signifi-
cance of soccer in European
countries is equivalent to rau-
cous tailgating football fans
in the US. Everyone faithful-
ly crowded into bars around
television sets to watch their
country’s team through the
process. Although this enthu-
siasm was not initially shared
by the American students,
they quickly became avid
fans. Hope and her friends
watched as Spain’s team
fought their way to the top,
eventually winning.
“The night Spain won the
World Cup, even in a smaller
city like Santander, everybody
went completely crazy. All
you could see anywhere in the
streets and plazas were seas of
yellow and red, and you could
barely hear over the fire-
works, screaming and chants.
I honestly feared for my life
a little bit. A car window got
smashed, people were setting
fire to things, it was insane.
The celebrations trickled over
for days after that.”

you also get to take a class.
It’s a win-win situation. The

a Polish area, etc. They
all meet at a parking lot
,and there is all this food
and live music. It was kind
of amazing. I got to try
Greek food, Polish, and I
even tried Indian food for
the first time, which was
actually really good. It was
a pretty great experience.

whole new continent for

Visit the Medina shopping centers
as much as possible.
Try as much local food (and drink)
as possible. Its all good.

Go to the huge beaches!
Try and visit with locals and see
how they live differently to you.
5 Don’ts while you’re there:
Don’t pay full price for anything (haggle!)
If somebody offers you meat confirm what
it is and more specifically what part it is.
Don’t stay in one city. There are several
fun cities that are very different from one
another (Rabat, Tangier)
Don’t expect to get much sleep; constant
traffic, lots of honking horns.
Don’t fly Air Maroc.
What are 5 Dos while in Austria?
Shoenbrunn Palace: I saw the
Wiener Philharmonic there, and
they were awesome.

called) they’re wineries in the mountains/

There’s a needle structure you can go to
where you can see over the whole city.
DRINK THE COFFEE! It’s so damn good.

Why did you decide to study in Thailand?
Claire- I wanted to go to Asia for sure, but China seemed too
scary. It was kind of a spontaneous decision that I eventually
stuck with, and now one that I am very happy with.  The fact that
I like Thai food helped a lot, too.

a few random choices and my school placed me here.

When driving down the road who
should you be listening to? Jessica
Cayne should be on your mp3 play-
ers really soon with her newest CD
“Issue’s” coming out at the end of
this year. This multi-talented singer/
songwriter will blow the minds of all
Study Breaks readers and have you
wanting more. Cayne reveals her
love for kids through charity work
while boasting about how self-full-
ing it is to be a part of something
bigger than herself. Since the pur-
suit of her musical career in 2005
it has been a challenging and event
packed five years with even bigger
things to come.

When did you know
you wanted to make a
career out of your music?
I have been performing my
whole life, ever since I was a
little girl with dance and the-
atrical performances. It has
always been in my blood. My
dad is a musician and also plays
in my band. I guess it was inev-
itable for me to show the world
what I have to offer.
What inspires you/
who inspires you?
As a songwriter, one of my
biggest inspirations are peo-
ple. You have to take a look
around you and see the people
that surround your life and
you will probably get inspired
to achieve your goals too. My
surroundings definitely inspire
me. Relationships are great
tools when it comes to song-
writing too.
What’s the most
important thing to you
when producing a song?
I think the most important
thing is when I am in the stu-
dio and I’m trying to figure out
what instruments to use. I don’t
want to overwork the song,
just let the song speak for it-
self, if it calls for just an acous-
tic guitar and a fiddle then just
use those, if you over do it then
you will get lost in it. Keep it
simple, that’s my motto.
What do you enjoy most
about being a musician?
The people. I wouldn’t do this
if it wasn’t for the people that
listen to it. The reason I do this
is to be able to make connec-
tions to people. Songwriting
and performing allows me to
build a relationship with peo-
ple that I would have never had
the chance to do. Talking to a
little girl who is so down on
herself and singing her a song
that will brighten her day just
makes my day that much better
that I can inspire her and make
her smile.
You do a lot of charity work,
what inspires you to do it?
The charity work that I do
comes from the same reason I
do music. I get the very special
opportunity to do something
that I normally wouldn’t be
able to do. If I am given a mi-
crophone you can bet I will do
something more than just sing
with it, I will use that power for
the greater good and take ad-
vantage of it. 500 songs for kids
is my favorite charity to work
with, these kids don’t get to do
the same things that you and I
get to do so I get the chance
to bring some joy to their lives.
Why wouldn’t I do what I can
to help other people, when
your in the public eye you need
to take advantage of it and I
am gladly accepting that role
because I want to make a dif-
ference in a kids life.
Did you teach
yourself guitar?
It runs in my family, my dad
is a professional musician so I
already had all these opportu-
nities laid out for me and with
that it just sort of happened. My
first song that I learned on the
guitar was “Take me out to the
ball game,” I learned and played
it in hopes of the Braves win-
ning the game with the song
from me being the good luck
charm. In 2005, I really picked
it up and incorporated it into
my songs that I had been writ-
ing. I wrote my first song when
I was 12 called “Romeo and Ju-
liet,” which is available on my
first CD. I’m lucky in the sense
that songs just pour out of me,
I’ll be in the grocery store and
will think of a line for a song
then immediately write it down
or record it in my phone; no
missed opportunities here!
What is your favorite song?
It’s called “Cool.” It sounds
ridiculous but I saw this guy
when I was out with some
friends. He was so self assured
and attractive, I couldn’t take
my eyes off of him. The whole
song is about a fantasy, what
would it be like to kiss him,
meet him and pretty much all
of the above!
If you could describe
your songs in the form of a
cocktail what would it be?
Oh gosh that’s a tough one, it
would have to be and it will
sound really gnarley - Makers
Mark Whiskey, PBR Beer, and
a splash of sweet & sour mix
all put together, call me crazy
but I like it. PBR- I drink it
and it’s a down home southern
brew; Whiskey - a little dirty,
makes you a little crazy and
loosens you up; Sweet & Sour
- a splash of something sweet
like me. None of those girly
drinks for me.
When is your next CD?
At the end of this year, the
name of the album is titled “Is-
sues,” all about getting torn up
by a relationship but owning up
to it and letting people know
that “hey I’ve got issues, so
watch out.” It’s got some funny

world. Let’s face it. As American college kids, the most culturally aware
we are without going abroad is thinking that instant ramen is a true
staple of Japan or that spaghetti with store-brand pasta sauce is as Feijoada Brazilian
savory as the real thing in Italy. Quit fooling yourselves and try these
recipes to taste the next best thing to authentic. Bean and Pork Stew

C oconut Curry Ti lapia Ingredients:

Ingredients:
1 tsp dark sesame oil
1 tbsp minced, peeled fresh ginger
4 cloves garlic, minced
1 cup finely chopped red bell pepper
1 cup chopped green onions
1 tsp Malaysian curry powder
1/2 tsp red pepper
4 tsp Maggi sauce
1/2 tsp sugar
1-14 oz. can coconut milk
1/4 cup chopped fresh cilantro
6 oz. tilapia fillets salt and pepper
Directions: Preheat broiler. Heat 1/2
teaspoon oil in large nonstick semi-
deep pan or pot over medium heat.
Add ginger and garlic, cook one minute.
Add pepper and green onions, cook
one minute. Stir in curry powder, Maggi
sauce, sesame oil, and sugar, stir for 30
seconds. Add coconut milk and bring
to a simmer (do not boil). Remove
from heat, stir in cilantro. Sauce should
have thickened. Season fish with salt
and pepper, place fish on baking sheet
coated with cooking spray. Broil for
seven minutes or until fish flakes easily
when tested with a fork. Serve fish with
sauce, rice, and lime wedges.

1 tsp balsamic vinegar
1 can tomato puree
1 can kidney beans
1 can red sugar beans
1 can butter beans
1 blood sausage,
sliced into 2 cm pieces
2 large carrots, thinly sliced
3 large bay leaves Coarse salt

Directions: In a pot, sauce onion and garlic
with olive oil. Add vinegar and bay leaves, stir.
Add pork to sautéed mix and fry for about
five minutes. Add carrots, courico, and blood
sausage, mix. Mix in tomato puree and add
wine and salt. Turn down heat to low and allow
to simmer for 30-40 minutes or until pork is
cooked and tender. Add beans and gently fold
into stew. Leave on stove for another 15 minutes
so beans can soak up the flavors. The longer
you let stew stand, the thicker the sauce will be.

Season chicken with salt and pepper. Heat oil in large skillet

Paccheri Pasta
with Braised C hicken
and Saffron C rea m Ingredients:
2 1/2 pounds chicken thighs
with skin and bones
2 tbsp olive oil
2 cups chopped white onions
6 garlic cloves, peeled and crushed
2 cups dry white wine
1 teaspoon saffron threads, crushed
2 cups low-sodium chicken broth
1 pound paccheri (giant rigatoni)
or regular rigatoni pasta
1 cup heavy whipping cream
2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice
2/3 cup fresh basil, chopped
over medium-high heat. Add chicken, skin side down, to
skillet and cook until golden, about seven minutes per
side. Transfer chicken to plate. Add onions and garlic to
drippings in skillet, sauté until onions slightly softened,
7-8 minutes. Add wine and saffron to skillet, bring to boil.
Continue to boil until liquid is thickened and reduced by
less than half, about eight minutes. Add two cups chicken
broth to skillet. Return chicken to skillet, bring to boil.
Reduce heat to low. Cover and simmer until chicken is
very tender, about one hour total. Transfer chicken to
plate and cool. Tear chicken into bite-size pieces after
cooled. Cook pasta in boiling water as instructed on
package. Meanwhile, add cream to juices left from skillet
and boil until sauce is reduced to 2 1/2 cups and thick
enough to coat spoon, about 10-20 minutes. Stir in two
tablespoons lemon juice, then chicken pices. Stir over
medium heat, adding more broth by 1/4 cups at a time to
thin sauce as needed. Season with salt and pepper. Add
chicken mixture to pasta and toss to coat.

class on time! Plus living in west
campus is great on those nights
downtown where you don’t want
to have to pay for a cab home -
just hop on the e-bus!

How did you lose the dorm look?

I learned that earth tones are a
