A. RESEARCH INFORMATION
Research Title:
Learning PANTRY (Performing Academic Nurturance To Reduce Yammering)
in Modular Distance Learning Delivery Modality
Short description of the Research:
The global outbreak of the highly contagious new strain of coronavirus known as COVID-
19 continues to pose unprecedented challenges. For the Department of Education (DepEd), this
meant the cancellation of classes and other school activities. The school needs to find a way but it
must be balanced with the welfare of the teachers and learners as well. In the Schools Division of
Calapan City, all of the schools will utilize Modular Distance Learning (MDL), which involves
individualized instruction that allows learners to use self-learning modules (SLMs) in print or digital
format/electronic copy. Due to the current learning delivery modality, a major problem to consider
that affects the quality of learning is the interest of students in performing various tasks included in
their learning modules. Most of the learners failed to comply with the needed written work and
performance tasks, resulting in low performance in a particular subject area. Thus, the least
mastered competencies arise. The teachers were challenged to think of possible solutions to
address the issue with the student’s motivation to learn and understand various concepts related
to the teaching-learning process. Hence, Learning PANTRY is created to address the challenges
in delivering of modular distance learning. Moreover, it will help to combat the identified least
mastered competencies, reduce the number of struggling learners, and let learners learn while
enjoying differentiated activities. The research will figure out the significant difference before and
after the implementation of Learning PANTRY. A set of questionnaires will be administered, and a
series of focus group discussions will be conducted. Submission of a Memorandum of Agreement
(MOA), the conduct of fund-raising activities, and sponsorships will be the prime mechanism of the
project. It will utilize a True-experimental design; mean, frequency, and t-test for paired samples.
In the latter part of the study, the school will have a culture of volunteerism for learning and strong
engagement with the community. Thus, the said project will create more linkages and
opportunities for the benefit of learners.

The global outbreak of the highly contagious new strain of coronavirus known

as COVID-19 continues to pose unprecedented challenges. At this point, the biggest

impact of COVID-19 arises from the need to practice stringent social or physical

distancing to prevent or mitigate its spread. For the Department of Education (DepEd),

this meant the cancellation of classes and other school activities. Schools must find

ways for learning to continue amidst the threat and uncertainties brought about by

COVID-19 while ensuring the health, safety, and well-being of all learners, teachers,

and personnel of the Department (DO12, s.2020).

In spite of these challenges, learning must never stop. The school needs to find

a way. But it must be balanced with the welfare of the teachers and learners as well.

For this new learning system, every institution must be linked with stakeholders and

communities to achieve inclusive education. The schools conducted dialogues,

cooperation, and collaborations to be able to deliver quality education. Relative to this,

learning must continue, but with careful consideration of the new realities brought

about by the pandemic. Under the great leadership of the school head, everyone will

look after each other, families, loved ones, and the students entrusted to their care.

Steadfast in the preparation for different learning modalities, the Department of

Education (DepEd) provides Self-Learning Modules (SLMs) with the alternative

learning delivery modalities to be offered for various types of learners across the

Philippines. According to our DepEd Secretary Leonor Briones, “the SLMs and the

other alternative learning delivery modalities are in place to address the needs,

situations, and resources of every learner and will cover all the bases in ensuring that

basic education will be accessible amid the present crisis posed by COVID-19”.

In the Schools Division of Calapan City, all of the schools will utilize Modular

Distance Learning (MDL), which involves individualized instruction that allows learners

to use self-learning modules (SLMs) in print or digital format/electronic copy,

whichever is applicable in the context of the learner, and other learning resources like

Learner’s Materials, textbooks, activity sheets, study guides, and other study

materials. Moreover, learners access electronic copies of learning materials on a

computer, tablet PC, or smartphone. CDs, DVDs, USB storage, and computer-based

applications can all be used to deliver e-learning materials, including offline e-books.

The teacher takes the responsibility of monitoring the progress of the learners. The

learners may ask for assistance from the teacher via e-mail, telephone, text message,

instant messaging, etc. Where possible, the teacher should make home visits to

learners needing remediation or assistance. Any member of the family or other

stakeholder in the community needs to serve as a para-teacher.

Subsequently, the integration of SLMs with the alternative learning delivery

modality will help every school to ensure that all learners have access to quality basic

education with face-to-face classes still prohibited due to the public health situation.

Teachers prepared differentiated instructions on various subjects for the students to

easily understand various concepts and topics.

Due to the current learning delivery modality, a major problem to consider that

affects the quality of learning is the interest of students in performing various tasks

included in their learning modules. Most of the learners failed to comply with the

needed written work and performance tasks, resulting in low performance in a

particular subject area. Thus, the least mastered competencies arise. The teachers

were challenged to think of possible solutions to address the issue with the students'

motivation to learn and understand various concepts related to the teaching-learning

process.

The importance of motivation in the learning process of learners cannot be

overstated. The motivation of the learner determines the success of their learning

process. They are motivated to achieve their objectives. Ormrod (2011) adds, "It leads

to increasing the effort and energy in pursuit of those goals." As a result, motivation is

critical to their future success. Motivation is vital in affecting the effectiveness of

learning activities, but objectives also impact motivation. If there is a higher aim, there

is a greater incentive to accomplish the goal.

Furthermore, motivation can activate and increase activity in the pursuit of a

goal. "Motivation can also work to activate and boost activity," writes Sukmadinata

(2011). Motivated students will be more excited about their studies and will almost

likely obtain greater outcomes than unmotivated pupils.

Two basic motivations correlate with a student's learning process: intrinsic

motivation, and extrinsic motivation. As Syah (2006) says, "There are two kinds of

motivation; the first is intrinsic motivation which denotes a sense of enjoyment and

interest in a specific topic or material. On the other hand is extrinsic motivation, which

focuses on praise and reward, school rules, the parent's role model, teacher, and so

on.

It is based on the constructivist teaching method, which states that learners

become more invested in their learning and take an active part in their education when

they are actively involved in the teaching-learning process (Shuell, 1996; Charles,

301802@deped.gov.ph
0936-943-9871

2011). They are more driven and willing to learn and be taught as a result of this.

Some teachers have utilized incentives to promote and keep pupils engaged on

projects because seeing youngsters actively participating in-class activities may be

encouraging (Covington & Mueller, 2001; The Gale Group, Inc., 2003; Ali, Tatlah, &

Saeed, 2011).

In the context of Nag-iba National High School, in its years of existence, has

been a reputable educational institution at the secondary level, although situated in a

far-flung area in the City of Calapan. Teachers were empowered to deliver quality

education among learners despite the current educational system due to the COVID-

19 pandemic. Unfortunately, through the "school-based kumustahan" there were

issues reported concerning the academic performance of learners in fundamental

subjects such as Science, Mathematics, English, and Filipino. The same scenarios

play out in other schools regarding the motivation to learn, resulting in struggling

learners.

Since the cry battle of the school is "BRAVE Nag-iba NHS", the whole

management is eager to bring hope and education to various “sitios” situated in the

area. Putting up learning pantries will be a prime mechanism to reduce the number of

struggling learners and uplift the standard of education. It was inspired by the food-

based community pantries put up in several parts of the country.  Furthermore, this

learning pantry will supplement students' learning needs and address various

yammering concerns about the implementation of the modular distance learning

delivery modality.

Hence, Learning PANTRY will help the school address the identified least

mastered competencies, reduce the number of struggling learners, and let learners

learn while enjoying differentiated activities. This study will also shed light on the

effectiveness of Learning PANTRY in developing camaraderie among teachers,

parents, and other stakeholders for the benefit of learners.
