Classroom Philosophy

This classroom is a repository where students can freely deposit their ideas and retrieve knowledge,
they find useful. Contributions are highly encouraged and there are no wrong answers. This class is a
safe zone to share and express all forms of ideas and thoughts. Please be polite to your classmate and
feel free to interrupt me at any point to seek clarification.

Lesson Objectives

Lesson The goal of the lesson is to introduce learners to the content and structure of the IELTS
Objective General Task, with emphasis on letter writing which is the first task of the IELTS
General Writing section. This will be achieved by presenting the guidelines and
expectations of the IELTS General Task 1.

Terminal Objective:
 At the end of the course, student will be able to write letters, essays and
confidently respond to the IELTS general writing prompts.
 Students will be able to extend their skills towards writing professional emails

Enabling Objective:
 Students will understand the structure and format of the IELTS General Writing
 Students will be able to develop ideas and respond to letter writing prompts
 Students will be able to identify moves and features of model answers

Note: The focus of this lesson is not on grammar or style, but the ability brainstorm
and communicate ideas in writing
Rationale for  The IELTS Writing is one of the four assessments required for test takers to
lesson objectives succeed in the IELTS examination. The students in this class need to pass this
exam to migrate and pursue various professional careers. Upon successful
migration, these students will be working in professional settings where writing
skills will be vital.
Assessment  Student will be assessed at the initial stage and at the end of the course. The
initial assessment will form a part of the overall assessment at the end of the
IELTS writing course.

Lesson Activities

Activity 1 –  The teacher and the students will introduce themselves and set the agenda
Introductions, goals for the day’s lesson
and agenda setting  Agenda is displayed, while the teacher walk the students through the agenda

Activity 2 – IELTS  Introduce students to the IELTS General Writing format, content, and
Introduction structure
 Entertain questions and clarify information (see appendix 1)

Activity 3 – Daily Context: students have been previously instructed during orientation to create a
writing separate email for the purpose of this class
 Students are paired together to write short emails to one another
 Students are given a short email prompt to respond to
10 minutes  The teacher is copied in all the email exchanges

Activity 4 –  A sample IELTS Writing task 1 question is displayed on the PPT


(Brainstorming  Students are asked to brainstorm and communicate their ideas in the class
activity)  The ideas are documented on a white board or a shareable document to
create an idea depository

 The ideas are categorized towards answering the questions

Activity 5 – Write  Students will draw ideas from the idea depository to write their response to
your own the sample writing prompt.
 The writing will be assessed, and areas of improvement will be suggested

Activity 6 – Sample  A model answer for the writing prompt is displayed and the teacher guides
analysis and students towards the analysis of the models answer

General Training Writing (60 minutes)

Format
 The topics used in the IELTS General Training Writing test are of general interest.
 In Task 1 you will be presented with a situation and asked to write a letter requesting information or
explaining the situation. You can write the letter in a personal, semi-formal or formal style.
 In Task 2 you will be asked to write an essay in response to a point of view, argument or problem.
You can use a fairly personal style.
Timing
 The IELTS Writing test takes 60 minutes. Spend 20 minutes on Task 1, and 40 minutes on Task 2. You
will need to manage your own time, so make sure you move on to Task 2 after 20 minutes.
Number of Questions
 2 questions
Task Types
 Two tasks: Task 1 and Task 2. You will be asked to write at least 150 words for Task 1 and at least 250
words for Task 2
Marks
 Your Writing test will be marked by a certificated IELTS examiner. Task 2 is worth twice as much as
Task 1 in the IELTS Writing test. Scores are reported in whole and half bands.

Sample Task 1 question

A friend has agreed to look after your house and pet while you are on holiday. Write a letter to your friend.
In your letter:
 give contact details for when you are away
 give instructions about how to care for your pet
 describe other household duties
Write at least 150 words. You do NOT need to write any addresses.
