that people love to hear stories.”

“Class remember, in writing a narrative

paragraph, we put action Verbs and

Transitional Expressions on it. Because,

narrative paragraphs are characterized by

words that show action and words that show

sequence.” (swipe)

“Just like the example”

“I took up the river road as hard as I could

put. By and by I begin to hear guns a good

ways off. When I came in sight of the log

store and the woodpile where the steamboats

brush till I got to a good place, and then I

climb up into the forks of a cottonwood that

was out of reach, and watched. There was a

wood-rank four foot high a little ways in front

of the tree, and first I was going to hide

behind that; but maybe it was luckier I didn't.”

“What do you think that this paragraph is a

narration pattern? “Do you have any idea,
class?”

(swipe)

“Alright, for the most part, it uses or the

logical sequence of actions supplies the
narrative sequence: Like this line, "I took off. .
. I heard guns . . . and I worked along under
the trees." (swipe)

“Here are also some of the common

transitional expressions used in narrative
writing: Meanwhile, eventually, soon, later,
first, second, then, finally, also, besides,
furthermore, moreover, in addition, too”

“This transitional expressions will help you to

write a narrative story or essay.”(swipe)

“So class, descriptive details in a narrative

paragraph are essential to a good story.
Because, every details help readers to
connect to the world the author envisions.“

to express your feelings to the girl, however
when you was confessing to her all of the
words that you’ve prepared was na mental

“Gusto teka” rather than saying those
flowering words.”

“Now class, do you know how to Write a

Narrative Paragraph? Well let’s figure it out
later, so for now let’s have the 2 nd pattern of
development, we have Description.” (swipe)

“I know we are a lot familiar of this word, so

when we say description it is to recreate,
invent, or visually present a person, place,
event, or action so that the reader can picture
out which is being described. It is heavily
based on sensory details: sight, sound,
smell, feel, taste.”

“ We have two varieties of description:

(1) Subjective and (2) objective description”

“Now let’s discuss about subjective description.”

(swipe)”

“Writers use descriptive paragraphs most often in

fiction.”It is about Description of time and place
that draws readers into other worlds and sets the
stage where a story can unfold and Description of
characters, their appearance, mannerisms, and
utterances, helps us imagine what people are like”

“Let’s read the description of Caroline Meeber by

Theodore Dreiser in his novel Sister Carrie”

“May I call on Ms._______ to read the example

paragraph.”(swipe)

“Caroline, or Sister Carrie, as she had been half

affectionately termed by the family, was possessed
of a mind rudimentary in its power of observation
and analysis. Self-interest with her was high, but
not strong. It was nevertheless, her guiding (Student will read the example

pretty with the insipid prettiness of the formative
period, possessed of a figure promising eventual
shapeliness and an eye alight with certain native
intelligence, she was a fair example of the middle
American class . . . " (Dreiser 1)”

“What can you say about this paragraph class?”

“Thank you Ms./Mr. ___” (swipe)

“Yes, In this type of description, the author is

describing an impression of what is observed.
What is described is subjective: the reader

experiences the world as it appears to the author (Students will press the raise
or the narrator in a story and learns what is button, and if not, call students to
important to the person recording the description.” recite).

“If there is a subjective description, there is also an

objective description.(swipe) In these writing
situations, the writer attempts to stay away from
emotional impressions or responses, and instead
report what is seen, as a video camera records a
scene, as in the following example:”

“Will you please read the example paragraph

Miss_____. Thank you” (swipe)

“The Acer barbatum is a small to medium-sized,

deciduous tree usually ranging from 15–25 m. (50–
80 ft.) tall when mature. Bark is light gray and
smooth on younger trees, becoming ridged and
furrowed with age. Leaves are opposite and
shallowly to deeply palmately lobed, with a few
blunt teeth but no serrations. The leaf sinuses are (Student will read the example
rounded, unlike those of red maple (Acer rubrum) paragraph.)
which are sharply V-shaped. Also, the sides of
terminal leaf lobes are more or less parallel, while
those of red maple are widest at the base, tapering
to the tip. . . (Sieberling)”

“It is important to note that while being objective

may be a writer's goal. If you’ve notice the
example there was a signal words, look at the
underlined words class.”
“The purpose for writing,is to determined how the
writer feels about the subject, the writer's age,

ethnic and cultural background, cultural contexts

for writing, and gender, too. Therefore, part of
writing good objective description, is being aware
of one's own biases.”

“In differentiating subjective and objective

description; subjective description,controls the idea
that it should be a dominant impression of a
particular scene or person. Supporting details
should help the reader understand the dominant
impression. For example, "It was a gloomy
morning," is an example of a dominant impression.
But if you want a Good supporting details you must
say, "The morning air felt damp and cold. People
huddled inside their coats."

“In an objective description, the controlling idea

should identify the object, scene, or person to be
described as objectively as possible and the
descriptive details of the paragraph should add
substance to the main point. Nothing should be
included in the paragraph that does not support
the controlling idea.”

“In both subjective and objective description,

organizing details around clear controlling ideas is
essential. You may experience a scene or a
person as a holistic impression; however, if your
reader is to understand what your observations
mean, then the details must be organized in a
meaningful way on the page.” so, your writing is
based on your readers.

“Before we proceed to the next patterns of

development, do you have any question? (If none,
proceed to the next topic) (swipe)

“Alright, now let’s discuss about the third patterns

of development which is DEFINITION” “Yes, ma’am.”

“Will you please read the meaning of definition

Ms./Mr._____. Thank you”

“By the way class, what is the difference between

description and definition, in your own idea?
(swipe)
“Student reads the meaning of
“Okay, thank you so much.” definition.”
“So class, for us to be more enlightened about the
difference between the two; when we say
description - it is describing the appearance, smell,
mood, or other characteristics of something just
like the appearance of a person (he had blue eyes,
a big nose, and curly brown hair), or the details of
a location like the landmark. Descriptive text adds
the details that help you visualize the characters
and events in your mind's eye. It quite literally
describes a person, place, or thing. Whereas, in
definition it gives the general or abstract meaning
of the words like”(swipe)

“Like for this example picture class, what do you

of what you’ve seen?”

 Definition: a portable telephone or a
device
 Description: type or the brand, color, size,
features, and etc.(swipe)

“In a definition paragraph, the writer's goal is to

help the reader understand new terms or
concepts, or to come to new understanding of
terms they may be familiar with.”

“Two types of definition: Scientific and subjective

definition”

“In defining scientific terms, a writer should be as

objective as possible, and when impressions are
essential, the writer should strive to use analogies
and impressions that the reader can readily
identify with. On the other hand, definitions can be
more subjective.”

“If you have notice, the scientific definition has

some words that are extremely hard to
understand, that only scientist, doctors, or
specialist does have the knowledge to understand
those terminologies but on the other hand, the
example of the subjective definition is very
understandable that we may able to catch up and
relate to the terms given.”

“To write a definition paragraph (or essay), a writer

must identify the term being defined, provide a
basic or general definition, and then provide clear

detail to support the definition. A definition can be

developed in a number of ways.”

“Now let’s have the next slide, and we will be

discussing about the 4th patterns of development
which is EXEMPLIFICATION” (swipe)

“This patterns presents the general statement and

provide specific and concrete examples to
expound on the main idea.”

“It provides typical cases or examples of

something, (swipe) so if we are going to use a
graphic organizer the best to use is a Spider map
or also known as a semantic map, the main idea is
placed along on diagonal line while the details of
the main idea are placed on the side of the
diagonals, if you write all this information in these
spider map and put it on a paragraph then it
becomes an exemplification pattern.”

“These are some signal words for exemplification

pattern”(swipe)

“Do you use these signal words?”

“Like after all, as an example, consider the

following…”

“So before you begin to write you must consider

these questions, what are some typical cases or
examples of it?”

Website: www.vsu.edu.ph

“So here’s the example of exemplification.” (swipe)

“I’ll give you time to read”(swipe)

“While the internet offers so many benefits to man,

it also has its downside. One if these is phishing,
which refers to the act of obtaining personal
information, such as password and credit card
details. In other words, phishing is a form of
cybercrime. As an example, let us consider the
case of Mr. X. he received an email stating that his “YES/NO responses.”
G mail account has been compromised and that
he needed to click a link to upload personal
information.”
(Students will press the raise
“Can you spot some signal words, (swipe) button).
yes the underline words are the signal ones.”

“So, the main idea is about phishing is a form of

cybercrime and the details here is about the
danger when Mr. X clicks the link as his personal
information will be taken.”(swipe)

“Okay now let’s proceed to the next pattern which

is EXAMPLE” (swipe)

“(Can you please read the definition of example

Mr./Ms._____, thank you so much.)”

“So deba in Exemplification it extends the idea

even further, it carries one or more examples into
great detail, in order to show the details of a
complex problem in a way that’s easy for readers
to understand. So have you spot the difference

between the two?” (swipe)

“One of the example of example pattern is a

picture which helps to illuminate or clarify the
meaning in the text. Illustration also refers more
generally to clarification through exemplification.
Writers use examples to make a general idea clear
—to illustrate an idea.“ (swipe)

“Using illustration in your writing you should have a

clear sense of an idea you want to illustrate, you
need to decide on the form of illustration you will
use; just like for example: (swipe)
“ Can you read Mr.____”

“Modern humans are bacteria-killing machines.

We assassinate microbes with hand soap,
mouthwash and bathroom cleaners. It feels
clean and right.”
“But some scientists say we're overdoing it. All
this killing may actually cause diseases like
eczema, irritable bowel syndrome and even
diabetes. The answer, they say, is counter
intuitive: Feed patients bacteria.”

“The example paragraph was trying to illustrates

human as a bacteria-cleaning machines as we are
deeply in loved/dependent by using those
microbes or any anti-bacteria items just like
soap, mouthwash and etc. that are so good for
cleaning but we humans are over doing it and that
it will cause to death. So in these case the main
idea is developed through a list of concrete

examples, making the idea clear and real.”

“So much for the example pattern, now let’s jump

to the next pattern of development which is the
classification” (swipe)

“Okay class, can you give me any idea or example

of a classification.”

“Thank you so much, class.” (swipe)

“Classification takes one large concept, and

divides it into individual pieces. This is particularly
useful when an author/ a writer has a unique way
of dividing the concepts, to provide new insight into
the ways it could be viewed. “

“Classification sometimes refers to a ranking

system by which things or persons are evaluated.
For example, a classification system is used in the
military to rank officers, and hotels are ranked and
classified according to quality, cleanliness, and
other features.” (swipe)

“We will be using the Division and Classification in

Your Writing”

“To use division and classification successfully,

you must first have a (swipe) strong sense of
purpose. Without this sense of purpose, your
system for dividing and/or classifying information
may not meet your needs.”

Website: www.vsu.edu.ph

“For example, if you pack for a camping trip

without taking the context of your trip in mind, you
could end up with all the wrong things”

“In writing an essay involving division and/or

classification, knowing your goal is also important.

“We have here another example, can you please

read Ms./Mr.______. (swipe)
“Dividing cancer into more than 100 different
types, medical professionals are better able to
analyze the disease; and by looking at different
groups suffering from poverty—for example, the
elderly, the sick, and those who are unable to find
work—we are better able to combat the crisis.”

“Thank you Ms./Mr.________.”

“Division and classification make it easy for

individuals to locate what they are looking for, but
these organizational methods are also useful for
understanding complex problems or issue.”

“Do you get it class?”

“Now let’s have the comparison and contrast

pattern.” (swipe)
“Definition”(swipe)

“Class, are you familiar with the word of compare

and contrast?

“What kind of chart can we use for this pattern?

“Very good, it’s a Venn diagram. Comparison and

contrast is organizes ideas based on how events,
places, people, things, and concepts are similar to
or different from one another.” (swipe)

“So here are some of the common signal words for

comparing and contrasting”

“Did you also used that words, class?

“Very good”

“The goal of comparison and contrast in academic

essays is generally to show that one item is “Yes, ma’am.”
superior to another, based on a set of evaluations
included as part of the writing.”

“Just like for example (swipe), who would like to

read the scenario? Any volunteer? Okay we have “Yes/no responses”

writing is particularly powerful when the author can

transition words to emphasize cause and effect
relationships between ideas is useful.”

“Do you use these signal words, class? Now let’s

have our examples what is these all about. (swipe)

Examples:
“1. Due to an oil spill causes crude oil to spill
into the water as a result, many plants and
animals in the water died.
 Cause: An oil spill causes crude oil to

which is the PROBLEM-SOLUTION.”(swipe)

“Can you please read Ms./Mr._____the definition.

“Problem and Solution is a pattern of organization
where information in a passage is expressed as a
dilemma or concerning issue (a problem) and
something that was, can be, or should be done to
remedy this issue (solution or attempted solution).”
(swipe)

“Just like these example: Water shortage is

becoming a serious problem in the city because of
the growing population. That is why, the city
government has to take concrete steps to address
it. One solution is to make more water available
through recycling. The building of more
desalination plants may be done but it is very
expensive. Another solution that the city officials

are doing now is educating the people so they do

not waste water. Meanwhile, there is also a move
of the government to protect existing water supply
form being polluted. There are some more ideas to
help solve the problem, but maybe, the ultimate
solution is that, everyone must become actively
involved.”

“What’s the problem class?” “Water shortage due to Growing

population, ma’am”
“And what is the solution?” (swipe) “Make more water available through
recycling, educating the people so
“Gladly, we have a guide questions for us to be they do not waste water, and

“So first, let’s seek what was asked;
1. What is the problem presented? How did
you know?
2. What are the solutions given?
3. What signal words or expressions introduce
the solutions?”

“Let’s take a look of some common signal words

for problem-solution that are useful in creating a
paragraph and essays.” (swipe)

“Did you use those words, class? Well, I guess we “Yes, ma’am.”

development which is PERSUASION.” (swipe)

“I want a volunteer to read the definition of this

pattern, anyone?”

“Okay, please read”

“Thank you, Ms./Mr. ______.”

(Definition-“It shows how a set of evidence leads (The student reads the definition.)
to a logical conclusion or argument. It presents the
issue, position, and supporting evidence.”)

“What do you expect from this pattern? you write

to convince, specifically this pattern presents the
issue, your position and the supporting evidence
that supports the position.” (swipe)

“Class, here’s some of the guide questions:

What is the issue?, What is your position or
opinion?, What is the opposing position/opinion?,
What are some reasons of your position?, What
are some cases or examples that support this?”

“That’s why you need to write a position paper, the

best way to apply it is when you write a position
paper.
“So when you try to identify or write a persuasion
pattern, take note of these guide questions,
consider also these signal words before writing.
Signal words for emphasizing a point, signal words
for concluding and summarizing, we also have
signal words for conceding a point. And here’s the

example of persuasion pattern.” (swipe)

“Kindly read the example paragraph Ms. ____”

“Example paragraph: Immigration contributes to

the overall health of the American economy.
Despite recent concerns expressed about illegal
and some legal immigration to the United States,
this country has largely benefited from the skills,
talents, and ambition that immigrants bring with
them. American businesses gain from a good
source of affordable labor, while towns and cities
are revitalized by immigrant families who
strengthen communities through civic participation
and the generation of new economic activity. The
United States must continue to welcome new
arrivals and help those who are already here;
otherwise, the country will lose the advantages it
has over other industrialized countries that
compete against us in the global marketplace and
seek to recruit from a vast pool of unskilled and
skilled global workers.”

“So class, in our example you may recognize this

from the lesson on paragraphs. The position is
supported by facts, but some of it is hearsay (what
the writer has heard), and some of the ideas are
rooted in the writer’s subjective viewpoint.
Opposing views are not directly recognized in this
paragraph, however, they may be hinted at.

“Do you have any questions?”

“Alright, we finished discussing all the ten patterns

of development in writing.”

“How is it?, Is it easy?” “Yes/no responses”

“In general what signal words help you understand

in identifying the different patterns of development,
but getting the main idea is much more important”
(swipe) “Yes/no responses”

B. Explore

“Let’s proceed to the next slide. In this phase, you

are going to explore and identify the main idea
from the pattern of development and the signal
words in each paragraph, are you ready class?

of development and the signal words in each
paragraph, you can use our chat box just type the

Paragraph 1:
“Traffic, traffic, traffic: this is what we always
face in Metro Manila. As a solution to this
problem, one government agency that jeepneys
be banned in the Metro. I strongly opposed this
suggestion for two reason. To start, the
Philippines has not yet built an adequate and
low-cost public transportation, for this reason
we are posing a problem to those who cannot
afford expensive transport systems like taxis.

Aside from this, due to banning jeepneys

affects our cultural identity. These colorful
vehicle, as well the actual experience of riding
them, have become one of the symbols of the
Philippines. It is therefore cultural crime to bar
them from country’s capital.”

“What’s the main idea of the paragraph, what kind

of pattern?”
a. Persuasion Pattern
b. Narrative Pattern
c. Definition Pattern

“OK, let’s check your answers. The correct answer

is letter a. persuasion pattern”

Explanation:
“the writer wants to convince the reader to
oppose from the suggested problem solution of
traffic which is to banned what?OK, one
government agency that jeepneys be banned in
the Metro. And also class in the paragraph we
can see some signal words that emphasized
the point of view of the writer such as: for this
reason, due to, and therefore.

“Very good class! It seems that you’ve got the

correct answer.”

“Let’s move on to the next paragraph.” (swipe)

relax. In the summer, the water is warm and

clean, and the beaches attract people seeking
relief from a midsummer scorcher. In addition
to swimming, visitors to the lake can go
canoeing, sailing, windsurfing, or fishing. The
blue water is a refreshing, tempting sight. The
sweet scent of sunblock wafts through the air
from sunbathers lying on the beach. Children
laugh and splash in the water, and nearby
volleyball games stir passionate shouts in the
heat of competition. Meanwhile, lifeguards sit
atop their towers and make sure everyone is
safe. In the distance, sailboats catch the soft
breezes that ripple Lake Harriet’s surface and
canoeists glide quietly past. This is what
summer is all about!”

a. Problem- Solution pattern

b. Classification Pattern
c. Description Pattern

“Let’s try to check your answers. The correct

answer is letter c. description Pattern”

Explanation: “In this simple description, the

reader should get a good sense of what it’s like
to be in this place. The pre-writing exercise of
listing different aspects of the experience as it
relates to the five senses is helpful when
coming up with something to write.”

C. Explain

“May I call on (name of the student) to tell the “Writers use Subjective description
difference between subjective and objective paragraphs most often in fiction, the
description.” author is describing an impression
of what is observed. Whereas,
Objective description is also used in
reportorial and scientific writing, or
other writing in which the goal is to
present an objective picture of an
object or scene. ”
“Yes very good! Meaning to say that the Subjective
description is more on the concrete idea and
delivered the thoughts in a detailed manner while
on the contrary objective description is only
focusing on the abstract, there’s no flowering
words that are included to the paragraph. (Direct to

D. Elaborate

to write? Why do you say so? ”

“ Next, (swipe) what is the pattern of development

that you think you’ll be having a hard time doing, (The student answers the question.)
and why do you think so?”
