All that you need to know about Sansad


Overview: Think of yourself as an articulate speaker or a master debater? Welcome to Sansad, the
inaugural Asian Parliamentary debate of XLRI! Compete against the best and prove your mettle
amongst some of the best national level debaters.
Prizes: Rs. 2500 for the winner and Rs.1500 for the runners-up coupled with stellar CV points!
Eligibility: All students who are pursuing an undergrad or post-grad course are eligible to participate.
Format: The event will follow the conventional format of an Asian Parliamentary debate, a brief
description of which is as under. The topic would be centered around pertinent issues from the public
policy domain.
Description: 
Each debating match will consist of two teams; one to propose the motion and one to oppose it.
The team proposing may be known as ‘The Proposition’, ‘The Affirmative’ or ‘The Government’. The

Each debate shall be timed by a timekeeper. In the absence of a timekeeper, a member of the
adjudication panel will time the speeches.
Teams will comprise the following members:
Prime Minister, or First Affirmative.
Deputy Prime Minister, or Second Affirmative.
Government Whip, or Third Affirmative.
Leader of the Opposition, or First Negative.
Deputy Leader of the Opposition, or Second Negative.
Opposition Whip, or Third Negative.
 Debaters will speak in the following order:
Prime Minister
Leader of Opposition
Deputy Prime Minister
Deputy Leader of Opposition
Government Whip
Opposition Whip
Opposition reply
Government reply
All speakers from (i) to (vi) would be given a maximum of 7 minutes to speak and both opposition and
government would have 4 minutes each for their reply.
Rounds: The competition would consist of the following rounds:
Round of 8: Top 8 teams which would be chosen as per their prior experience and a written
submission (would be communicated later) and would compete with any of the other top 8 team
as decided by the organizer.
Round of 4: The winners of the 4 debates would move on to the round of 4. The team with the
maximum points would compete with the team with the lowest points out of the 4 teams. The
other two teams would compete with each other.
Final round: The winners of Round 4 would battle it out for being the inaugural winner of XLRI
Parliamentary Debate!
Marking Scheme: The scoring scheme would be communicated to the top 8 teams. The selected
teams would be informed of any further instructions on the day of the event. The decision of the
adjudicators would be final and binding on all.
