ACTIVITIES / EXERCISES

I. Discuss a current event that was influenced by, or could have been positively
influenced by a clear understanding of OB. Prepare an essay that concisely describes
that current event and what you believe to be the impact of OB.

As this time, wherein there is a global pandemic occurring due to the corona virus
that emerged back in 2019. Not only, did it trigger the humanity in fear and concern due
to health safety, but it also impacted the country’s economic state due to prior lockdown
and policies that hindered several fields in the nation, specifically the business sector.

Organizations which are composed of a group of people that has a specific

purpose or goal at hand, has been challenged by changes and adjudgments. Before this
current situation, organizations with the help of the managers already prepared plans
ahead of time and have been managing all the works effectively and efficiently.
However, due to the unexpected occurrence of the current situation, organizations were
pulled into a difficult decision-making process in order to continue performing. Due to
the pandemic, it highlighted more on the importance of the presence of the
Organizational Behavior of every individual within the organization—which indicates
that despite this circumstance, the application of knowledge of each, is pragmatic for the
organization’s effectiveness and efficiency.

An organization cannot perform and be manage the same way as before. Face-to-
face interactions are limited which results to the idea of the organization to adapt the new
normal. Regardless of this, with the presence of Organizational Behavior, the person or
people who are in the higher positions had to consider and undergo deep thinking on the
strategies that should be applied and reconsider for the benefit of the organization.
Observations of data and studies formed by people mirrors how persistent an individual
is, to makes things better and easier. Moreover, despite of being in a “work from home”
situation which is really a handful to employees, the performance and productivity were
never lessened—attendance are still measured and the duty is still being fulfilled. There
are still meetings being attended to hear concerns and announce protocols of new
techniques and strategies.
In each mind, envisioning the idea of yourself in a workspace as a symbol of strong
work ethic makes it more motivating to continue working efficiently and effectively.
Though, it is expected that some employees decided to resign or transfer to another.
Thus, the organizations provided what should be provided to all members, from the
health area up to giving the appropriate compensations. In terms of the managers in this
situation, Organizational Behavior helped the managers to better understand what actions
should be taken in consideration, likewise it impacted more on how they can interact or
connect to all of his members which also tested their leadership skills.

In reality, without Organization Behavior, there will be a total chaos mixing with
the chaotic circumstance that the whole world is facing. It promotes engagements to
organizational members, lower the stress levels and etc. Without a strong Organizational
Behavior, it could cause burden to the organization. Nonetheless, the current situation
may be a challenge to all, but it is a great help in the reanalyzing how individuals can re-
examine what acts should be enforced.
II. Choose an organization either local or abroad that you admire. Briefly describe your
chosen organization, discussing what goods or services are produced, how many
employees it has, what the structure looks like, and a general overview of how the
organization of study is managed. Explain why you chose that organization.

Canva is a company that develops a site that allows non-designers to create

graphics. This company has left a mark in this generation—not only it is current to
students but it applies to all individuals. It was founded in the year 2013 and up until
now, they have been spreading throughout the globe through building a headquarter in a
country like the Philippines. It is generally known as the creator of a web-based graphic
design platform called “Canva” which allows non-designers to create graphics through
drag-and-drop design tools with a stock library of photographs, illustrations, and imagery.

The company of Canva, continuously improves their website to over 10 million

users worldwide in order to satisfy the users needs. Canva offers a platform that is free to
use but they also offer paid subscriptions like Canva Pro and Canva for Enterprise for
additional functionality. Thus, they also offer physical products to be printed and shipped
to the consumer. According to the last data regarding the count of employees, as of
February 2021, there is a total of 1500 employees accumulated from all offices. It does
not sound as much, but the type of the services they offer to consumers are more than
enough.

The reason why I chose Canva, is because it is one of the most in demand
company that I recently read that offers excellent benefits to their employees. In all of
their offices or branches, there are around 300 plus employees that are carefully chosen
and trained in terms of the organization’s culture and ethics. Not all, does their office is
pleasing to the eyes but the company is very hands on their employee’s welfare. For
example, in the current situation, Canva distributes needed gadgets (laptops) to their
employees for their “work-from home” set-up. Thus, the company is actively engaging in
team buildings and all employees have a healthy working environment and connection to
their co-workers. The management and managers are effective and equipped enough to
motivate their workers to perform well in order to give the consumers the best quality
they can serve.
Canva is a dream company to work in. It may not be as big as YouTube or any
social media company, but it already made its mark since its founding year. The
Organizational Behavior is absolutely present, which is highlighted by the individuals
within the organization.
Answer in an essay format.

What do you hope to gain from the study of OB? How well do you think you currently
understand human behavior in organizations? Have you ever been surprised by the actions or
reactions of another person? Why? Describe what actually happened and what you were
expecting to happen. What do you think may have caused the difference?

As a freshman student, it is a good opportunity to study and understand Organizational

Behavior. Not all students have this kind of opening in their life and some may have
underestimated its importance. I hope to understand what lies beneath the word “Organizational
Behavior”. Likewise, I’m anticipating to open not only my eyes and ears, but also my mind
regarding this matter especially on how we should interact in the working field in which the
abundance of different things and diversity of culture is existing.

Being aware of the idea of Organizational Behavior is quite interesting. But it should be
natural for us, to be mindful of this since it is a very big deal especially when we are already in a
workspace. As far as my understanding in Human Behavior in Organizations, I come to realized
that there are so much more knowledge and information that I can acquire and apply. Learning
its meaning is not enough, hence there must be always a spare room for new learnings. In today’s
time, I am fully aware and not surprised that all individuals have their own understanding,
awareness and etc., which indicate that we are all different and also divided due to diversity. It is
expected that there are different reactions towards a situation. However, one must be conscious
that we may need other people in order for ourself to improve and better understand what is right
in front of us.

Even though, I am aware that there is a certain thing/situation that is surprising to my

eyes and for others, it is the opposite. For example, in a conversation I had with my friends,
while browsing in Facebook, I saw a funny meme that made me cracked in laughter. I decided to
show it to my friends one by one, and I was surprised that one of my friends did not laugh since
according to her, it is not funny at all. In an instant, I was bewildered and later on nodded and
asked her the reasons why she does not find it funny. In this situation, I told myself to not expect
the same reactions that I am anticipated from other people, since we all have our own way of
reacting to things. Even if, there are things in common or a bond between an individual towards
one another. Similarly, in a work setting, working in a same workspace does not mean, you share
the same understandings and values. It may be confusing at first, but I know that through this
subject, as time passes, it will be clearer and be more sensible.
