The Boons and Banes of Academic Freeze in Time of Pandemic

This academic year has brought a sudden shift in the learning environment from physical classrooms into
online platforms. Education has changed drastically whereby educating is undertaken distantly and on
digital platforms. Be that as it may, it was not as effective, difficulties and areas for development are
recognized. The role of being an instructor was transferred to the parents. Parents are attacked with the
task of guaranteeing that their kids are learning. It was a weight for them thinking that they are working
from home as well. There is no assurance that children are as yet learning with this kind of arrangement.
This is an absolute nightmare to be precise. That is why many people are considering and are still calling
on for academic freeze.

Citizens being inexperienced has shown its fruit that online learning has made frustrations to teachers,
parents, and students with all other things else happening now. We are confronted with different
challenges brought by this pandemic. Issues and concerns are stretching out from one to the other
compromising the fate of our society. Academic freeze has been a trending topic over social media
platforms. But how should the Philippine educational system do in the midst of this pandemic?

In light of everything, an academic freeze may not be the best ideal alternative but can be adopted until
the pandemic is over, and until the digital divide can be completely tended to. Notwithstanding, online
classes are hostile to the poor. Not everyone is privileged. Students without a stable internet connection
or who do not have a gadget are left out. For certain families, putting food on the table and getting by is
their current priority.

Many say we are on a similar boat in this pandemic. In actuality, we are not due to the fact that we are in
the same ocean but not in the same boat. A few are on yachts and some are on ships. Solid, strong, and
safe. Even so, the majority are on wooden boats, others are holding onto floaters and many are already
drowning. We are scarcely surviving this pandemic. This is equivalent to our online learning. We have a
similar option to approach quality education but not everyone is privileged to have the essential
equipment. Not everyone can afford to attend online classes because of the limitations of internet
connectivity and the inaccessibility of gadgets.

However, it is important to take note that distant learning is not restricted to online classes as it was.
Schools are currently adjusting to an asynchronous and synchronous method of learning conveyance.
Students who do not have access to the internet are given student-focused learning modules where they
can still learn and proceed with their education in the comfort of their own homes. Educators are putting
forth a valiant effort to come up with learning materials to make sure that lessons are passed on to the
students.

An academic freeze may allow our students, teachers, and school administrators to team up in aiding our
front liners, helping our local governments, and assisting the country with recuperating an economic
downturn by conducting comprehensive socio-economic volunteer preparation programs. Yet, it might
also increase the risk of negligence. Furthermore, without students' educational costs to keep the
paychecks coming, an academic freeze could likewise threaten the job stability of educators and school
laborers, many of whom have already lost their jobs.
