5. Read audio script 20 on page 72 and underline all the future forms.
Conversation 1.
A: Ok, guys. Here’s the plan: we can’t use the helicopters because of the fog. So we’re
going to go out to the rig by bus and boat. The bus will be here in about an hour, so you all
have time to grab a cup of coffee. It’s going to be a long day.
B: How long will the drive take?
A: About three hours, I guess. And then the boat will take another six or seven hours on
top of that.
B: It’ll be dark when we get here.
A: Maybe, yes. I’ll amend the schedule on the bus. We’ll start the inspections tomorrow
morning.
B: Ok
Conversation 2.
Welcome, everybody, and thanks for coming. As you know, this meeting is basically to
discuss the new schedule for the refinery visits. Now, I know this is very unusual but this
project comes straight from the minister. There have been several refinery shutdowns in
the last few, months, both planned and unplanned, and the result has been shortages in
various products. Diesel oil has been in very short supply, for example. The minister is not
happy and has asked for a full report. So this office will be visiting all refineries in the
country to check exactly what is happening on the ground. We’ll be handing in our report
exactly seven weeks from today. After that it’s back to normal. I’ll be leaving tomorrow
morning for meeting with the minister, so I wanted to discuss the schedule with you before
I go.
Conversation 3.
A: Ok, so the next item on the agenda is the drilling equipment packages for the ETW drill
ships.
B: Sorry, what ETW drill ship?
A: Ah! Forgot you weren’t here last week, Tony. It’s a new contract. We’re supplying
drilling equipment packages, including pressure control equipment, for four drill ships
belonging to ETW. It’s a Brazilian company.
B: Ah, Ok, thanks. Sounds good.
A: Yes, it is. The contract was signed last week and we’re starting deliveries next month. In
fact, Harry is flying out next week and I’ll be joining him just before the first delivery.
B: Four packages. Must be worth a bit.
A: It’s the biggest order in the company’s history, so it’s pretty good. And I understand
there are more orders on the way, so…
6. Match questions 1-6 to answers a-I. For some questions, more than one

R: My plans for next year are to start my own business, continue with the paramedic
course, get into a better physical condition, and buy a new phone.

Alternative solutions
1. Listen to a Project manager talking about a new pipeline. What is the problem
with the original route? What are the alternatives?
R: The original route is not acceptable due to the great negative impact that it will
cause to the environment, that is, a lot of damage to vegetation, wildlife, etc.
The alternatives are the following; use the available pipes, and look for other routes in
the southern area, because in the northern area there are too many faults.
2. Listen again. What are the issues relating to the different alternatives?
R: The problem with using the available pipes is that they will not give the capacity they
need without investing more money to expand the facilities, make communication towers,
etc., and much more money would be spent than in the investment that was had in mind
for the original pipe. The problem with looking for another route for the pipeline in the
southern area is that the study had already been done previously and it was concluded
that many wetlands had to be crossed, in addition, that the southern area is sparsely
populated and there are few roads, to consider this alternative It should be taken into
account that temporary houses must be built for the personnel who will work there.
3. Listen to the telephone coversation. What three types of wáter bodies are
mentioned?

 Minor water bodies.

 Major water bodies.
 Intermediate water bodies.

4. Listen again. What is the good news?

R: That if they work in the wetlands in the dry season, open cutting methods can be used,
which are much cheaper.
5. Different methods for crossing or diverting water are mentioned in the
telephone conversation in 3. List as many as you can. Then read audio script
on pages 72-73 to check your answer.
a) Normal open cut methods.
b) HDD: Horizontal directional drilling.
c) Doms and pumps or flume.

6. Match 1-4 to illustrations A-D.

tracks 21 and 22 again and check your answers.
1. If I start my team on it today, you will have something on your desk by, say, next
Monday.
2. If we build a pipeline there, we will have to build access roads and housing for the
workers.
3. If we want to cross intermediate water bodies, we will have to divert the water.
4. If we work in the dry season, we’ll be able to use open-cut methods.
5. If there’s no water flow, we will be allowed to use open cut.
6. So if we time things right, we will save a lot of money.
8. Complete this conversation with sentences a-e.
