Condition Monitoring

“Activities based on process data aimed at the avoidance of

maintenance problem by prediction of likely failure modes”.
ISO/TS 16949:2009

• Condition Monitoring implies assessing the health of machine by trending

known engineering parameters against standard limits to
Detect, Analyse and Correct
Before
Failure Occurs
The 4 Stages of an Effective CBM program

Detection - Trending vibration levels and spectral contents in order to

detect and quantify any changes from normal

Analysis - When significant change is detected, vibration analysis

pinpoints the source / nature of a problem

Correction - Advanced warning through detection and analysis

enables corrective actions to be prepared and implemented

Verification - New readings ensure that ALL defects were eliminated /

corrected, and also establish new baseline characteristics
What are the Condition Monitoring parameters?

Vibration Analysis

Ultrasound Analysis – Acoustic Emission bearing monitoring

Thermal Analysis –Temperature, Thermography

Oil Analysis- Condition of Oil

Pressure
Thermography

Thermography is a method of inspecting

electrical and mechanical equipment by
obtaining heat distribution pictures. This
inspection method is based on the fact that
most components in a system show an
increase in temperature when
malfunctioning. The increase in temperature
in an electrical circuit could be due to loose
connections or a worn bearing in the case of
mechanical equipment. By observing the heat
patterns in operational system components,
faults can be located and their seriousness
evaluated.
